Sonic Mania Adventures

Hmm..something just crossed my mind. When Sonic warped into the "Modern Dimension" via the portal the Phantom Ruby opened at the end of Mania, he was in Titanic Monarch, or rather the final boss area but in that vicinity, on Little Planet.

Why when the Phantom Ruby is destroyed does he end up back where it all started on Angel Island in Mania Adventures, where it was dug up no less if those holes are anything to go by. Shouldn't be have been spat out where he left, rather than Angel Island?

If the Phantom Ruby creates illusions/virtual realities, and all the Zones, except for maybe Hydrocity Zone and Lava Reef Zone, are illusions/virtual realities, it would make sense that he would return where the Phantom Ruby first appeared.

In fact, I always saw the area that we see Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and the HBH moving in the Opening Animation as the overall illusion hub created by the Phantom Ruby.

Unless Mania Plus changes or reveals something.

The whole Sonic Sepertists movement actually started before Sonic Adventure.  When the online fanbase was in its infancy, Sonic fans used to argue about the cartoons, comics, and video games despite them all centered on Classic Sonic.  During this era. you had Aosth, SatAM, SU fans, vs the Archie Comic fans Vs The Genesis fans.  Once Sonic Adventure was internationally released, then this whole re-purposing of the division shifted from simply Classic vs Modern.  Classic all of sudden encompassed everything Sonic associated with the 90s while Modern was strictly Sonic Advenutre.  So even as far back as 2000, there was this dichotomy of Sonic fans who couldnt be mutual on the subject.  You're either a classic or modern fan.  Are you a classic fan?  GTFO and go join FUS or Rat.org.  Im mostly speaking of the early 2000s SonicHQ days.

In hindsight, I do agree with your statement.  Sonic should be a unified franchise instead of all these convoluted sub-universes.  My assumption is if the 3D Sonic games were consistently successful, this problem wouldn't exist.  Modern Sonic was basically Sonic evolving to reflect the 2000s, a new era.  Unfortunately, one failed experiment after another detracted fans and made them realize in comparison to the Genesis games, Classic Sonic couldnt do no wrong.  Big bloated storylines with horrible dialogue and glitchy programming vs simple, streamlined and actions that convey the dialogue.  Even i the library of failed 3D Sonic games, thees still elements of potential, but they werent utilized.

....................

Mario for example, started out simple and then evolved by gradually adding subtle new elements.  Its not like Mario shaved his mustache, turned his hat backwards and spouted cringey yet instantly dated catch phrases.  Id say the only way to merge both, is to sadly reboot the entire franchise and create one simple storyline.  Sonic has always been a polarizing enigma from the very start and the issue has always been the pointless reinventions of the character.

Yup. 100% agree here. Its funny though, I know there were factions in the Classic days but I don't remember them as much because I essentially loved all of Sonic back then (as I was a tyke). A very similar thing happened with the Nintendo kids of the Modern era. When many of them were introduced to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, they had no stake in the franchise and were often very young and unaware of how many longtime fans felt, which is that SA2 was a big turning point in franchise in terms of tone, narrative, and even gameplay focus. It was the first game that didn't really feel too "Sonicy" overall even compared to its predecessor and much more so with the classics.....but those Nintendo kids, because it was their first experience with Sonic and they loved it, had no awareness of our gripes. (That's not to say that every classic fan hates those games because that's definitely untrue). One thing I will say, like you mentioned, is that if 3D Sonic games had actually been fundamentally sound even with all the janky story and dialogue, we likely aren't in the situation we're in now with the Modern vs Classic because the series would still have a reputation for quality gameplay offerings.

I also agree about the reboot. Sonic doesn't need reinvention, merely 'rediscovery' (which is one of the biggest contributions Mania has had on the franchise over the past year or so). There shouldn't be a scorched earth, clean slate hard reboot but definitely a soft one that allows SEGA to tie the lore together and set a strong gameplay foundation. Every game need not be connected, but the series should be consistent in its image, basic content, and narrative. Sonic has a rich enough history already, with an (over)abundance of characters and storylines. They should re-establish a basic canon and utilize the potential that already exists in a more unified and consistent way. Reintroduce characters as needed and only use them when appropriate (do not risk compromising basic integrity of the storyline just because they're popular). And once 3D Sonic finally climbs back to mainstream popularity and respectability (again, like Mania)....... protect the brand!!

I don't know if its going to happen but the current movie rumor outlines a scenario that, in my opinion, definitely gives them the potential to do this.

Agree with a lot of your post, this got my attention tho. Care to point me in the direction of these current rumors? Either on here or via message. Would be appreciated :)

I would imagine regardless of what direction Van originally wanted that the movie will end up a "Modern" branch of some sort. Even with the popularity of Mania I can't see them opting for the classic era vibe for a Hollywood movie sadly.

It appears that first animation Classic Sonic does in Episode 1 is the same one Modern Sonic does in Sonic Forces, just reversed.

Modern Sonic also flicks his nose in the Casino Night DLC and after getting a B Rank in Unleashed HD.

That's just seeming to be Sonic's version of that anime thing where cocky characters are rubbing their finger under their nose...

Except it doesn't happen before boasting...

No, Modern Sonic does it with right hand, whereas Classic with the left one.

Really highlights how much better the hand drawn animation is for emoting over the 3D model. Those gifs are worlds apart in terms of character

Yeah, he also does it in the cutscene before fighting the Egg Golem in SA2 and I remember something similar in the OVA before the last fight against Metal, but as you say, it's such a commonly used gesture outside of Sonic that I don't think each usage of it within the series is meant to be intended as some sort of specific reference to a previous time, more that they're just using a similar gesture multiple times. It's always reminded me of Bruce Lee, he often did a little nose-thumb flick before/during fights in his movies.

I still can't contain my excitement for this.

I can't believe it's even happening!

I'm looking forward to this more than anything right now! I really love the art style.

Not really bothered by the lack of dialogue (but I would've welcomed it either way, if the characters kept in line with their OVA's counterparts).

It's such a great feeling to be a Sonic fan right now! Unlike, say... 2014, when we got a spinoff series of a worse modern Sonic. Seriously... Who ever asked for that?

I'm surprised to see so much salt regarding the separation. We all get what we want now. We even get two different teams for the respective games.

But anyway. I hope Sonic Mania Adventures does extremely well so that it becomes a larger series. Maybe even take us to Mania 2!

While Sonic Boom was certainly not something I asked for, it's something I didn't know I wanted. To be honest, outside of Sticks which I love, I really like the show, it's pretty genius, Sonic fans just hate it because it looks so different and comedy is not their cup of tea, but it's really good for what it is, I definitely don't want to see it die right now.

But I would be okay with either season 3 or a Mania/Classic-esque cartoon, this is (for now) just a very short webseries, an experiment if you want. Which would you guys prefer?

TBH, I'd want nothing more and nothing less than for the modern side to go back to Adventure style. One of the reasons why I got fed up with Modern is because 10 years later we're still having Boost gameplay, which is my least favorite, and while I once thought it was getting better (Colors) and better (Generations), now it's getting significantly worse (Forces).

But hey, this is just me.

I'll get back to being a fan of modern when they ditch boosting.

I really hope Sonic Team gets their act together and create something both Boost and non-boost fans can enjoy.

Has the Boom fandom accepted that their brand won’t see next Valentine’s Day?

I won't want it to end. I have to keep my hype in check tho, Aaron has said they are quite short episodes.

I really hope they are testing the waters so to speak, and if it gets a lot of attention/hits/likes etc that they may be considering a full length series.

It was interesting to hear at the panel that they have a whole studio/animation team working on this, and they have been taught to imitate Tyson's style, as well as even having rules for how to draw certain things like Eggman's glasses and eyes. I realize it's for speed, to lighten the workload and meet deadline etc and that as they said animation itself is a lengthy process that in cases like this needs a lot of people, but I can't help but be optimistic and think if it does well they then have a whole team of people that will have the style down and be able to work more episodes if Sega decided to do so.

Some info

Quote

Welcome back to Angel Island with Sonic Mania Adventures! Sonic has just arrived back after the events of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, but something is already amiss. What are the huge holes being dug in the ground? And why is Eggman already capturing more animals? The story begins here, with the first of five parts in: "Sonic Returns"!

Exclusive Sonic Mania Adventures merch is available now at www.shop.sega.com , and we’ll be making new merch for each part as it goes live! The SEGA Shop is only available in the Americas, AUS, and NZ.

Finally, a HUGE THANK YOU to the many people and teams who have been working hard on Sonic Mania Adventures since last year. This is just the beginning, but a great many people have poured their hearts and souls into this animation, and we hope everyone watching it will enjoy it as much as we do.

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Spoiler

Seen it! Amazing! Sonic is such a savage, I love how it is animated and written, and the Music effects too! It does help that it's quite short but the plot and humour reminded me of AoStH, with Eggman's traps. And Metal returns next ep! I knew part 1 would be just Sonic and Eggman, good choice.

Also, is it possible that the zone in the teaser is from Mania Plus, one of the modified zones in Encore mode??? Totally curious about that...

I liked it, it was cute and somewhat funny, which already makes this better than the whole AoSTH for me.

Although it did give me this sort of "really wacky" vibe that I had from trying to watch AoSTH, and I'm not sure I like that.

2 things that I'll put under the spoiler:

Spoiler

1) I can't believe Eggman is fucking dead.

2) I'm probably one of those people that question a lot of stuff, but when and where did Sonic get on eof the Emeralds? Didn't all of them fly all over the place at the end of Mania? I want my continuity damn it.

Spoiler

Wait, Classic Sonic had a Chaos Emerald the whole time?! Why didn't he use it during Forces?!

(And is it the green Emerald from the Classic or Modern universe...?)

Doubt it, it's clearly a destroyed portion of Angel Island - which with exception to Lava Reef Zone, isn't a zone in Mania other than the intro.

Spoiler

Likely reason: Rule of Funny - Eggman needs a reason to get caught in his own trap.

Story reason: Possibly one of the emeralds flew into the vortex with Classic and he got it before landing in Forces.
