Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game

Recommended Posts

I'm all for being skeptical of how satisfactory story elements in a Sonic game are going to be but it's never been to the point where I was presented with confirmation that my fears for a specific plot point were unfounded only to twist it into something resembling the original fear, except far more implausible.

The silliness of Classic Eggman being a key figure in a game where the marketing's focus was only on the Modern aesthetics and characters as well as having the continuation of something vague from Sonic Mania be followed up in Team Sonic Racing, the game where they all race each other in cars, is almost too hard to wrap my mind around.

Is that what Classic Eggman's first decree upon being stuck in this world would even be? To dress as a cat and host a racing competition? Lose interest in Sonic and Shadow's rivalry the instant an explosion happened in a race?

Sounds more like something Boom Eggman would do honestly.

People, isn't it obvious? It's Big the Cat's brother. Big's being forced to race because his brother said he had to otherwise Froggy will be on the menu.

Or maybe it's Turbo who survived Wreck it Ralph and infestated another racing game.
Hey, if we're guessing anyway.

I doubt it's Classic Eggman, relies to much on the audience being familair with small details in the previous game, like Eggman's fate in Mania.
Besides, a lot of Modern SOnic games have a tendecy to leave the villains fates to be very ambigious, like the Deadly Six.
Or how Eggman escaped the void in Generations. And Eggman in Forces.

That said, it could be a cute twist I suppose.

It could go either way in my mind, just wanting to see which between Adventures and Encore is canon. And I don’t think Kishimoto’s involved this time, similar to how Mania Plus resolves the fates of the Heavies (still doesn’t explain why Heavy King’s suddenly in no worse a state than three of the others, nor the sudden redemption at the end), which went ambiguous originally.

Whats the point of bringing in a Riders stage if the most obvious add is avoided? If Jet Wave and Storm got snubbed in the character roster, I couldn't fathom the team reaching over to the riders series to pay homage to any of the stages. It'd feel like a slap in the face.

Well, that depends: Does SonicTeam, at minimum compared to the actual developers of this game, really care about the Rogues themselves?

Cause otherwise, a track could totally make it in if they like its look.

Sadly, I think it's very likely that Dodonpa is Classic Eggman. I've done some research on Dodonpa and he has way too many similaries to Eggman.

Here's why I think Dodonpa is Classic Eggman (Warning: Spoilers for Sonic Mania Plus and the Team Sonic Racing IDW comic):

  Hide contents

The fact that he drives around in a hover craft that looks awfully similar to the Egg Mobile, the way he laughs is similar to Eggman's laugh (hohohoho), him having a mustache like Eggman, letting Eggman join the competition in the Team Sonic Racing comic despite him being uninvited because he found Eggman's efforts to join the Grand Prix "amusing", Classic Eggman being sucked into the portal by the Phantom Ruby in Sonic Mania Plus, Dodonpa being a mysterious figure overall, etc.

Nah, I sincerely doubt that's where they're going with this.

There is definitely the possibility that he is a robot created by Eggman, but if nothing else thus far, the comic heavily implies he's just a philanthropist out to see some thrilling(and destructive?) competition and just took a liking to Eggman because he brought that the hardest.

and it's bad that they bring back the Wisps for the millionth time (Seriously, Iizuka, just give the wisps a rest already)

Eh, they're fine here, being a spinoff and all.

I agree that they can/could've also make use of other items, though.

Most of this barely constitutes being related to Eggman specifically, or stretching (the Eggmobile looks nothing like Dodonpa's craft). "He's mysterious" isn't a point of evidence either - god forbid SEGA doesn't tell us everything about a new character for once.

This game has enough problems without making ones up based on extremely flimsy evidence. When are people just gonna take Mania Plus' ending as the funny visual humour it was very blatantly intended to be?

Because we just can't have nice things anymore.

Dodon Pa is a Tanuki, not a Maine Coon.

Or how Metal "survived" being left "unconscious" with Omega. Or how Dr. NEGA(and sometimes Eggman himself) survived/escaped most of his appearances. Or where Devil Doom landed. Or what the heck happened to Infinite's body.

Ah, so he got a job at the same place Mighty and that Woodpecker no one remembers hang out.

Neat.

But what was that about him being in tact?

In the Egg Reverie Zone, Classic smashed the Phantom King, But the others were not finished off, and were presumably in the blast radius of the Titanic Monarch. I find it hard to believe that Phantom King wasn’t obliterated when caught in the blast radius of the Titanic Monarch with the others.

Oh yeah, that was in the original Mania.

I think.

One track from the original All-Stars Racing, and one from Racing Transformed. The only other game to lift something from is Sonic R, surely? Or is there going to be a new track for Seaside Hill?

That's a cool remix album Jun Senoue is composing!

...what do you mean it's an OST for a video game.

On a serious note, it's cool that we're getting music tracks and it's pretty nice to have some Transformed rep (I actually didn't expect a track from that game because of the lack of transforming), but even I'm getting kinda tired of there being a remix every 2-4 weeks without any gameplay. Sure, the game is coming in 5 months, but knowing how SEGA love doing their marketing lately, we probably won't get any gameplay footage till, like, end of March or even April (2 months or so before release), which is just frustrating. We've seen 3 tracks in action total.

At least we're getting tracks announced this way, that's cool I guess...

I don't mind bring back old tracks from previous racing games, Mario Kart does it all the time. Perhaps sprucing up the ASRT original or not choosing Seaside Hill yet again would have been better but whatever. I for one would loved to see Thunder Arsenal make a return or a Egg Fleet inspired track.

Great music as ever but yay this all but confirms three of the game's tracks will be Seaside Hill agaaaaaaaaaaaaaainnnnnnnnnnnnn

(To be fair though we know it can't be a carbon-copy because the cars don't transform in TSR, and Ocean View contains boat sections). EDIT: Forgot that the first lap is entirely on land.

I mean it would be very very cool if the third track to complete the "throwback zone" was something from Sonic R (presumebly Resort Island to keep the theming going) but on the flipside that inconsistency would kinda bug me too lol.  Though I guess there's nothing that canonically suggests Resort Island couldn't be a part of whatever archipelago makes up the overall location known as "Seaside Hill".

I’ve always hated that toot toot sonic warrior song but God dang if that didn’t sound good in that remix.

Music continues to be on point.

As much as people would hate it, might we also be seeing Sanctuary Falls, Galactic Parade, and a track from Casino Park return? Possibly even a Final Fortress track [though this seems the least likely of the lot to return]?

So far, we have Coastal, Desert, Urban, Winter, and either Forest or Industrial [Wisp Circuit falls under both, but my understanding is there being a central theme to the zones]. If Boo's House and Sand Road split, that adds either the ancient ruins or haunted theme to the pool. My betting would be on ancient ruins as its more diverse a theming. Just as I'd settle for industrial for Wisp Circuit for the same reason. Add in space for the final theme [as it's very likely to happen], and that's seven.

I'd be totally cool with Seaside Hill, Casino Park, and Final Fortress returning... if they felt like legacy tracks and there was a ton more coming along that more than made up for it. Like, if there were at least 30 or even 20 unique racks to race on.

Also, if they put in Hang Castle.

At the moment, there's too little for me to be 100% okay with seeing places I feel I've seen recently come back yet again, I guess. Especially not three versions of the same ones.

I just hope that Ocean View is part of the 3 tracks for Seaside Hill Zone and not a separate zone that will be followed by two other Ocean View tracks (because then we would literally have 6 tracks in the same zone). They did say that we would have 21 tracks in 7 zones and Ocean View is a part of Seaside Hill Zone so this has to just be the second of the three Seaside Hill zone tracks, right?

...Right?

In all seriousness though I was expecting them to just bring back the other two Seaside Hill Zone tracks from the first Sonic and All Stars Racing. If Ocean View is a part of the 3 Seaside Hill Zone tracks, then we were given more than what I expected.

But we all know how SEGA loves reusing old zones and assets so I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Ocean View is considered an actual zone by itself.

Music is great as expected, and I doubt this will change. It elevates the fact that I no longer look forward to something else besides the track list, therefore, I am disappointed... 😕

Not the best version of YCDA; I prefer the ASRT rendition. It's not bad though. But what is bad is a second reused Seaside Hill game. This game looks solid and decent, but it also kind of sucks. Why is it so light on content?

And when are SEGA actually going to show the game off? Music is great, but I'd much rather be hearing unclear tracks over gameplay footage. Just show us the bloody game.

New Team Sonic Racing ost released called Ocean View.

Now to me this looks like the exact track layout from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

I miss The Spindash.

Transformed's track design was amazing, and even without the boat section Ocean View is easily more interesting than what we've seen of TSR's original tracks. I hope they'll at least tie the Egg Kraken into the race somehow.

Seaside Hill being its own zone however means there will be a third track, new or recycled, and that at LEAST the trio of Casino Park or Final Fortress will come back as well, making for the full stage selection and showing just how low-budget this project is. The Eggman zone pretty much has to be Final Fortress at this point, tied to Death Egg and maybe a returning Starlight Carnival if we're lucky. Let's pray the missing zone is not triple Casino Park, or they at least use its assets for an amusement theme including Twinkle Park.

Again... The Music is fine like always. But... jeez... show us some gameplay for once... it seems like they have really nothing to show off. Imagine if this came would have came out in December 2018 like it was planned to be.
