Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game

Recommended Posts

I really wonder, if they will add in some extra characters and tracks. The biggest downfall for this game is the lack of surprises and fanservice. As crappy as this Nicktoon kart racing game looks, but it has technically more of fanservice and surprises in its game, than TSR.

They need all the time they need to make this game at least good.  I doubt it's gonna be spectacular or anything.  How about a good or even decent game?

I really welcome this decision, but I just wonder with such a far push back, how are they even going to promote the game in half a year? 12 of 15 characters are revealed, the other three are confirmed through not-quite-official means, but the character reveals kept the interest in the game going at least somewhat. The story's also been written so they won't alter the teams to bring in the missing Team Rose/Chaotix characters, so the only trio I could see being added are the Babylon Rogues. It's definitely in the realm of possibilities since a recent interview had "no comment at the moment" on the number of characters.

That being said, 18 instead of 15 won't solve the game's problems, so I hope they mainly use that time to create a better product, and also breathe more life into the game, its characters and locations. I'm getting a little wary though since I keep thinking back to the comment that said the game was initially planned for Spring 2018, and Sumo Digital having other games stuck in development hell..

Unless the game gets pushed back even further to accommodate Team Leftovers a and Team Leftovers b. Also watch Jet get partnered with Chaos and Infinite...

It’d sure work with how the teams are now...

Gotta be honest, nearly walked into that one.

While I can't say much more than a base viewing, 12 characters from four of the most popular shows out of the wealth of history of Nickelodeon does not seem like more fan service. From the screenshots and trailers it looks like effort has been made to create representations of the franchises in the tracks, but most of it feels background material. If you've played it and can give a better impression of the sort of things you're talking about, I'm sure that will help.

__________

Come on, people. Let's make as much noise as possible and get Team Leftovers as a canon name!
It'd be entertaining to see it officially acknowledged, at least.

One thing I think was overlooked is that Sumo Digital's work had been declining in quality ever since Transformed. They made Little Big Planet 3, which was horribly broken and buggy, and they continued making DLC and made no attempts to fix the gamebreaking bugs. Its funny that the Sonic fanbase greatly respected Sumo, while the LBP fanbase detested them for destroying the LBP franchise. They made Snake Pass, a mediocre puzzle game, and Crackdown 3 and Dead Island 2 have had seriously troubled development in their hands. They did make Disney Infinity and Forza games, which have been excellent, but they have arguably tried to take on too many games and are struggling as a result.

I have a question: Do you think Dodonpa is classic Eggman? I mean where would Classic Eggman go after Mania Plus?

If it's really Classic Eggman then t'll be very disappointing.

I think so.

The simple answer is "I don't care and neither do the Mania devs". Mania Plus's ending cutscene is played for laughs, much like Generations.

Given Eggman is seemingly playable, it's likely Dodonpa is just a new character with mysteriiiious motives.

It might be because many of the old guard retired, Sumo had talent going back to the old Gremlin Graphics days when they worked on the Commodore 64 and early on too. We are talking about Monty on the Run and even earlier, developers getting a reputation from their coding skills that aren't really taught. Different than the current developers who use middleware engines or mobile programming and struggle when not using those. After Transformed and playing their next game, Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed an obscure 3DS platformer and the quality dropped like anything. It was a basic Mario clone that even crashed, a 2D platformer crashing... It was a sign of things to come...

For the latter two, Disney Infinity is made by many developers with Avalanche (the Disney/WB one, not the Just Cause/Mad Max/Rage 2 one), Heavy Iron Studios (Spongebob: Battle of Bikini Bottom) and even Ninja Theory helping out. Forza Horizon 2 is the 360 version using the foundation that Playground Games already did without the updates/DLC that the Xbox One version got as well as using the same engine as 1. It's no different than the Xbox port of OutRun 2, Sumo's first ever project and also a bookmark being the last game with the old guard working on it. There's also Hitman but that was only one mission.

And then Zavok showed up in Forces despite being from a comedy game...

And Classic Eggman is now a separate Eggman from the playable one here, meaning indeed it could be very much possible. Being played for laughs doesn’t preclude becoming relevant later.

Zavok showed up because he was a somewhat noteworthy villain from a Sonic game, like everyone else. One that despite what you've said, actually tried (really badly) at being dark and more serious. Or at least a la Adventure, which people seem to forget also had a bunch of corny jokes mixed into its narrative.

They're not comparable.

The Colorado mission is the worst mission in Hitman, so that's not great 😛

I'm hoping he's just a new character with neutral alignment. Haven't really had those in a while.

Lost World was clearly trying to be a very dark story that takes a cartoony artstyle. The Deadly Six themselves were mentioned by the game's developers as being humorous, but dangerous. Not really that strict.

And he was in Forces beside he's honestly one of the more distinct and manageable villains in design, as well as one of the recent/only new villains after Generations.

Granted, he was also the one Zeti that Sonic can't hope to defeat generally lacked any humorous qualities, so I guess it's a different type of strict.

Then why didn’t they pick Erazor, Mecha Sonic, or Rouge?

I guess Sonic Lost World really is kinda like Attack of the The Eye Creatures. Or it would be, if it weren’t for the previous games and comics that had equally serious art to go with the serious stories, causing a dissonance in fans when they saw Lost World using the Nintendo approach to dark themes (quite badly, thought), with Zavok coming off as a Baron Zemo as opposed to the Cackletta he was supposed to be.

Rouge is on the side of the Heroes and was never really that significant a [Sonic] villain to begin with.

I would say that Mecha Sonic is specifically a Classic thing, but then they kinda opened up that well themselves, didn't that? Plus, he was already kinda out of place in S3&K, so....

Fair enough on Erazor, as he meets similar requirements as Zavok with only the Storybook banner holding him down. Well that and the volcano his lamp was tossed into.

I honestly had to look up what you were referencing. Jeez.

Cackletta seems kinda weird to reference here, as she was still quite over the top and derpy, from what I recall.

Dat Zemo comparison is spot on, though.

Zavok was from a main game (Lost World), while Erazor is pretty obscure, same for Mecha Sonic, and Rouge is more of an anti-hero. Plus Sega really likes Zavok apparently.

That too.

Honestly, when you really analyze the Deadly Six, Zavok really does come off as a mostly honest attempt to make another recurring villain that's distinct from Eggman.

At this point I feel like the stage selection is already miles better than Generations (4 cities, 2 hills, etc.), we've got: returning fan favorites like Planet Wisp and Rooftop Run, surprises and varied tropes like Ice Cap and Sandopolis (new remixed before), a variety of themes like ice vs lava, alien planet, festival town, desert and haunted mansion, that's already more different than Generations, I wouldn't mind a casino zone and a base zone, so Casino Night and Death Egg would be cool, but if they make more original choices, I'd love it, but I'm already happy. It's just Seaside Hill that ruins everything.

This means that, contrary to what Chris Knopps says about current Sega not wanting to risk with edge, that Hunnid-P could return, maybe together with Hoobastank? Or the London Symphony Orchestra?

Hunnid-P still cranks out Sonic themed tracks from time to time. I can't imagine they would say no to getting back in on anything involving Knux.

The only hang-up is their hooks and appeal are all lyric heavy, and I'm not sure that would fit with a Kart Racer - outside of a main theme or something. I'd welcome them back with open arms in the next main game though. The Avatar shows Sega is still down with vocal themes for stages.

EDIT - You know what... I retract the above statement. Embrace the Praxic fire and go Full on Sonic R with a few of the stages. lol
