Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game

And I'm totally fine with that, never expected a Sand Hill remix of all possibilities. I'm glad they're doing this, it adds variety at least somewhere. If they bring the Death Egg, I hope they do a remix of the actual Sonic & Knuckles' song or remix of the Egg Gate music from Sonic Forces, that one is sick.

Transformed's track design was amazing, and even without the boat section Ocean View is easily more interesting than what we've seen of TSR's original tracks. I hope they'll at least tie the Egg Kraken into the race somehow.

Seaside Hill being its own zone however means there will be a third track, new or recycled, and that at LEAST the trio of Casino Park or Final Fortress will come back as well, making for the full stage selection and showing just how low-budget this project is. The Eggman zone pretty much has to be Final Fortress at this point, tied to Death Egg and maybe a returning Starlight Carnival if we're lucky. Let's pray the missing zone is not triple Casino Park, or they at least use its assets for an amusement theme including Twinkle Park.

Egg Kraken?

The only big thing that might get my attention for this game are the story and maybe the last mysterious character that Sega makes such a big deal about it. With the last remaining zone themes... I'm not sure... we already have urban/sky theme with Rooftop Run, an ocean theme with Seaside Hill, a desert/haunted theme with Sandolopis, an ice theme with Cool Edge and with Planet Whip we have a nature/forest theme.

What's the deal with this mystery character?

I'm 90% sure it's been confirmed that we're getting 7 "zones" with 3 tracks each, but the only tracks we've seen more than one track from is Sandopolis and Seaside Hill.  It's still a bit up in the air as to how much variety there'll be in the tracks, but the assumption is that there will be significant asset re-use between them all - however the MUSIC for said tracks will remix various themes from that "genre" of zone.  Sand Hill may be the remix of choice, but the name of the TRACK is Sand Road, remember, and like Boo's House, it is set in the same zone - which is either Sandopolis or just a generic desert location.  Think of the soundtrack in the same way as how Windy Hill Act 3 used Green Grove's music in Sonic Adventure - it's just music.  Windy Hill Act 3 is not meant to be Green Grove, likewise, Sand Road in TSR is not meant to be Sand Hill.

Same deal with track names. Ice Mountain in TSR is likely not the Ice Mountain of Advance 1. The Sand Hill Connection is more feasible by both stages being in the same general location, but Holoska’s pretty far removed from Angel Island.

There isn't really a mystery character.  Sega has unofficially revealed Eggman and Metal Sonic by allowing them to be seen in footage, but hasn't revealed them officially yet; while the third member of what's probably called Team Eggman hasn't been seen at all.  This is something else which was almost certainly meant to be revealed ages ago but was pushed back along with the game's release date.  Mind you, a couple of preview articles appear to have let slip that it's just:

Spoiler

Orbot and Cubot.

I don't think I've seen a recent Sonic game with less interest than this, mainly due to marketing, even the E3 trailer doesn't have as many views as Forces and Mania videos, it's a spin-off, I know, Mario & Sonic series has been getting the same lack of hype. Though I'm gonna say that they really showed little of the game, the E3 trailer is mostly music and CGI, if they did a trailer like Crash, that shows a lot of stuff, that could create more interest perhaps.

There was no way that trailer was going to get as many views as Forces or Mania regardless considering the nature of those games compared to this one. That said, it's hard to deny at this point that the marketing for this game hasn't been very good at all. You can only generate so much hype with nostalgic remixes.

It's feeling very much like a repeat of the lead up to Sonic Forces. Everyone complained about how little they were showing and the reason was because there wasn't much to show. The only zones we weren't shown when Forces actually came out turned out to be Metropolis and the Eggman Empire Fortress which still shocks me. And here it's pretty much the same deal. 7 Zones with 3 variations of the same location yet again, this time using some locations from Generations that weren't already used in Forces.

It's so confusing because it's Sumo Digital. I know the team working on this game are newbies but some of these decisions still seem a bit too limiting even for that. Sometimes I just wish some higher up would come out and just be extremely honest with us.

Wow I actually forgot about this.  And so far I believe we've only seen 4 zones?

Five so far - Planet Wisp, Sandopolis, Rooftop Run, Seaside Hill and an ice stage that's yet to have a clear connection to any previous zone (the one track we've seen uses Cool Edge music but doesn't contain any visuals that evoke what make Cool Edge unique among other ice stages).

More zones speculation and round up… including single tracks and music. It's probably the best part of the game, that and teamwork mechanics. It's just the roster that is wasted potential here.

Zone 1, Planet Wisp:

- Wisp Circuit: Planet Wisp remix, more circuit based area.

- Mother's Mountain (I think): this was hinted at in a video or something, likely includes Mother Wisp and could be a more jungle/alien planet environment.

- ???: likely a factory area, nature vs technology. Remix unknown but it could be a variation of Planet Wisp.

Zone 2, Ice Cap:

- Ice Mountain: Based on Unleashed's Holoska, ice with volcanic background. Remix is Cool Edge Day mixed with Reach for the Stars.

- ???: It could be… I think, a SA1 Ice Cap based area, with snow and an avalanche chasing you. It would be pretty awesome with a remix of Be Cool, Be Wild, Be Groovy.

- ???: Volcano/Lava area, it could be a stage mixed with Lava Reef from Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Red Mountain from Sonic Adventure. Remix is one of those.

Zone 3, Rooftop Run:

-  Market Street: Based on Generations' version of Rooftop Run, with the festival and balloons, remix is Unleashed Day's tune I believe.

- ???: Sunset sky based track, it's the Rainbow Road of this game, I think, we can see it in CGI in the E3 Trailer. Remix is totally unknown, could be anything at this point.

- ???: Unknown, it's likely Night Time Unleashed based Spagonia, with monsters and a remix of the Werehog battle jazz music.

Zone 4, Sandopolis:

- Boo's House: the earliest based zone, according to an interview, from Sonic 3 & Knuckles but with King Boom Boo, remix is Sandopolis Act 2.

- Sand Road: Daytime Sandopolis with a remix of Sand Hill from Sonic Adventure (unexpected choice).

- ???: I'm gonna say Pumkpin Hill from Sonic Adventure 2, with a remix of said zone, because of that official drawing released on Halloween which had clear TSR references.

Zone 5, Seaside Hill A.K.A. Remastered Cup:

- Whale Lagoon: From Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, the first track of that game, with a Seaside Hill remix.

- Ocean View: From Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, first track of that game (again); with a remix of "You can do anything".

- ???: Using the trend of recyled tracks, this could be "Ocean Ruin" a.k.a. the third Seaside Hill track of ASR. But… considering the "Ocean" in the name, I kind of doubt it. Alternatively, it could be a brand new, bonus track based on Green Hill, however this goes against what has been said in an interview that the earliest track is from Sonic 3... I'm not sure.

Zone 6, ???: (Could be a Casino based zone with multiple zones mixed in it, however this goes against that interview, again. Or… this could be a zone from Sonic Forces, I'm sure there is one in the game)

- ???: A track based on Mystic Jungle from Sonic Forces, Casino elements from the Classic Sonic stage, in fact with a remix of Casino Forest.

- ???: A track based on Mystic Jungle again, but this time the night time jungle with giant snakes etc. Remix could be Aqua Road, the Avatar stage.

- ???: A track based on Silent Forest from Sonic Lost World, which in my opinion was the best zone of that game, with a remix of said zone.

Zone 7, ???: (This is definitely a base/space zone with various bases mixed into it)

- ???: Could be Egg Hangar from ASR and Transformed, the third recycled track if Seaside Hill doesn't get "Ocean Ruin". I honestly wish the remix for this track was "Never let it go" from Sonic the Fighters.

- ???: It's probably a brand new Death Egg track, an Eggman base themed track, with references from other Eggman based from other games, remix could be a track from Sonic Forces's Death Egg, or Death Egg from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Alternatively, it could be another Eggman Base zone entirely.

- ???: My gut feeling says the very final track of the game is based on Final Rush from Sonic Adventure 2, so the ARK and space themed zone, with possibly a remix of the VS Shadow fight of said zone.

I hope this post helps with the round up of zones and tracks, but also gives ideas for speculation. What do you think?

I'd say that's about right, though if we're putting Classic's Mystic Jungle from Forces in, I'd rather the song be that snazzy Double Down tune from Lost World, especially if the track emphasises the casino in the forest angle a lot more than what the Forces stage did.

With Iizuka saying he specifically wanted a racing game that could be played with kids, it sounds like SEGA have had more input in this one. That (and a lower budget) would lead to a more limited scope than the last game. Transformed, on the other hand, definitely looked to allow Sumo much more creative freedom.

Perhaps unpopular but I would like if Egg Pawn was a bonus character or DLC, I hope it's not all the extra that we're getting, but since they have the model in the game, why not have it playable? I mean, we already have the Chao as outsiders, Egg Pawn would fit too.

Gonna be honest, pretty sure next to no-one expected or wanted Zavok... but he's still a better character than four chao in a car so whatevs.

Even though I bash the Deadly Six to the point where I made a video all about that, I guess I'm fine with Zavok being added. I would personally prefer someone like Infinite, but I suppose it makes sense since it looks like Sega wants to make the Zeti a recurring thing... or at least make Zavok recurring.

just flesh him out a bit more, pls.

I was hoping Orbot and Cubot would share a kart like the Chao, but this is alright.

Eggman and Metal Sonic were shoe-ins even before the leaks and tie-in comic, but I still don't care for the D6. Here's hoping we at least get a reason for Zavok and Eggman working together again. (Did he finally get that magic conch shell back?)

Apparently there's a press release out there that literally uses the Robotnik name?!  (Seen here, among others.)

Quote

Today, SEGA® announced the rotten members of Team Eggman, a new diabolical squad that will be hitting the track as the final team in Team Sonic Racing™. Fans can pre-order the game both physically and digitally for Sony PlayStation® 4, Microsoft Xbox® One and Nintendo Switch™, with a digital only release on PC.

Get to know the speed demons in the Team Eggman pit crew by checking out the descriptions below:

●      Eggman [Technique] – a.k.a. Dr. Ivo Robotnik is the main archenemy of Sonic, with a personal goal of achieving world domination

●      Metal Sonic [Speed] – one of Eggman’s lethal creations, this cold, violent machine aims to prove that he’s the better hedgehog between him and the Blue Blur

●      Zavok [Heavy] – the leader of the Deadly Six, a demon-like being that continues to battle Sonic and friends whenever the opportunity arises

Zavok, huh.  With this and Forces, Sonic Team must really think there's something about Zavok and the Deadly Six that's worth pushing.  Can't imagine what, but I hope you're all looking forward to the Sonic Lost World Switch port!

Let's not forget that Zavok wasn't even mentioned by name in Lost World apparent from in the text for a single mission. He's not a character that's ever been given a real introduction or reason to exist, and his debut game was pretty crap. He's not really liked at all. That's no problem with him being playable in theory, but it's really strange when he's put in above so many others. I could just about understand Chao over Cream and Team Vector instead of Team Chaotix... This is bonkers though.

Christ, the roster for this game is pretty weak. Although that said, I'm honestly kind of glad that they went with Zavok over Infinite.

There are times when SEGA cares a little too much about what people like and there are times when they clearly don't care at all.

This is definitely the latter of the two cause, lmao REALLY? ZAVOK? What, were Orbot and Cubot busy? Is Infinite home, sick?

This is legitimately as hilarious as it is confusing.

I'm kinda baffled. Is there a huge Zavok fan following I don't know about? Like, I still don't understand why he's being pushed out this hard compared to other, arguably more iconic villains. First Forces, where Zavok had more screentime than Chaos, Shadow (illusion) and Metal Sonic combined, now this.

I'm not saying the choice doesn't make sense - since Eggman is tech and Metal Sonic is speed, there isn't that big of a choice when it comes to brawling villains. It's just that I haven't seen a lot of people say "GEE, I HOPE ZAVOK IS IN THIS GAME".

Man, Infinite would've been a better choice than Zavok tbh. And they confirmed in press release that this is the last team. Man, what a waste of a roster.

Honestly, even though I don't care for Zavok, he always struck me as at least having something to work with...unlike the other Zeti who were barely even one note.
