Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game

Recommended Posts

How casual do you prefer the game to be?

The bad part of Transformed was that some details of its gameplay were too hidden or unobvious. A lot of people stopped playing after the first try because they found the game  just boring. When in reality the positive part and the fun of the game comes when you finally mastered and discovered 100% of its mechanics. I had the patience and the will to find out about everything and the game and I played like for 3 whole years, it was great!

But I understand that a lot of people did not have this same experience with Transformed because of the lack of casuality.

There's a part of me that's worried someone is going to mandate they be really stingy with the character roster.

Like they'll just do the regular shit with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, Amy, and Shadow and then throw in Blaze, Silver, and Metal Sonic as extras and call it a night.

That's just where my mind goes nowadays though. I can't help but dwell on what I don't want to happen. I suppose that lands me in the position of being excited when it turns out I'm wrong though.

Most of these predictions aren't really predictions so much as they're entries from Sonic Zone Name Generators.

An actual prediction would be something like:

- Green Hill

- Studiopolis

- Speed Highway

etc etc. They probably won't be called that in the game, but it's a more solid prediction than "Space Gardens". What is that even referring to, Gusty Garden Galaxy from Mario Galaxy?

JirenFlame - Mario Kart
Block Island - [Wii] Block Plaza
Sunlight Shores - [DS] Palm Shore
Neo Skyscrapers - [N64] Skyscraper
Eggman Stadium - [Wii] Funky Stadium
Echidna Park - [GCN] Baby Park
Chaos Plant - [Wii] Toad's Factory

Credit where it's due, that's pretty much a palette swap of names if ever I saw one.

Sort of spiritual successor to Sonic R confirmed! Yeah this was just posted on ResetERA so I have no idea of the veracity of this - but looks legit I guess?

I see we're back to "leak-prone" Sega yet again given this isn't supposed to be officially unveiled until the 22nd.

EDIT: That's interesting. The user on ERA that posted this just edited his post and deleted it almost immediately. Posted something he shouldn't have?

EDIT: yeah as expected, it's fake.

You know what would be cool? If this game took a page out of Mario Kart Wii's playbook and had different vehicle types. Like, you have your cars/karts that get better turbos and stuff, then you have an alternative that's smaller and nimbler. And by alternative I mean bring back the hoverboards. You know you would dig a game where you can pit the boards against cars/karts, and it would be an excuse to bring back the Babylon Rouges as playable characters, all without having to make a new Sonic Riders game.

So, if this game does end up being called “Super Sonic Racing”, do you think they’ll keep the theme song? If so, we might end up getting a sweet remix.

Before people start thinking this is real.

ZhugeEX (the ResetEra admin that has been giving hints on this game before its announcement) pretty much said that's not the name of the game and the logo is fake.

Heck, the logo is so poorly done I'm not even sure how would anyone fall for that

It seems legit but the lack of a more appealing and imagetic logo really makes me think that is isn't... I mean, it is just a shield and some letters, it just sucks

Darn. I figured that the logo was fake, but I was hoping that they happened to guess the right title. Mostly because I really like that title.

The Switch version better not be 30fps. The Switch is a considerably more powerful system than a lot of people (and tbh some third party devs) realise - it's more of a midway point between current and last gens rather than just a souped up Wii U. I mean Sonic Forces was well optimised for handheld mode all things considered but even though docked mode benefits from over double the GPU clock it ran at the exact same settings at 30fps when it could easily have been improved in terms of graphics or performance. A lot of devs optimise for handheld mode and then leave it at that. Assuming the PS4/XBONE versions run at 1080p, I'd be more than happy for a jump down to 900p or even 720p + a small bump down in visual quality for 60fps (while docked ofc). If the PS4/XBONE versions are 30 then that will just suck.

Honestly, I'm more interested in the confirmation that the title won't be the obvious reference to Sonic R. Then again, I could see something like Sonic Turbo Racing before I could see that.

In case anyone was wondering, Jon Burton has no formal connection to this game. He offers his thoughts on this video though, which is kind of surreal and incredibly awesome.

For those unaware, Burton founded Travellers Tales and worked on both Sonic R and 3D Blast.

Nobody should expect a roster any more varied than the Kickstarter board game + Classic Sonic.

Allow me to expect more. If the gameplay features 10-12 racers at the same time, there is no way they'll have only 21 characters, even Transformed had more than that. Anyway, I would be more than happy with that board game roster if it means I can play as my favorites again.

You can expect more but you won't get it.

We know it's Sonic only.

Add onto that the two worlds rule applies.

So lets assume given it's 3D it's Modern Sonic.

So no Boom, and likely no Classic.

2 exceptions to that, Sticks + Classic Sonic.

So that means, you'll likely see this.

Primary:

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles & Eggman.

Secondary:

Shadow, Amy, Metal Sonic, Infinite, Chaotix.

Fillers:

Zavoc, Chaos, Big.

Wildcards

Sticks, Classic Sonic, Super Sonic (Likely tied to Sonic, not his own character).

I very much doubt, unless they ignore the two worlds rule, that the roster will look any different to that. Aside from maybe Blaze and Omega. That list will likely be it.

Those characters are all currently active, used in recent games, used in license deals and within the last style guide.

This isn't a dream list, this isn't a I hope this will be the roster, this... if they are following the rules that they're putting on everybody, this is likely the roster.

It's a spin-off so they can have characters from different "worlds", Boom (if they still want to use that outside of Sticks), characters from the classic branch/Mania. My point stands, there is no way they will only have 20 characters in the roster if there are 12 players in a race.

If you think they won't add any more Sonic characters, which is a fair guess, who do you think they will add? SEGA characters? Guests? I wouldn't mind, even though the Larry leak said there won't be other SEGA IPs.

I don't believe they will add anyone.

I think that is likely to be it.

Based on Segas behaviour and their rules, unless they break them or decide to go out of the box, e.g. a Chao racer. The roster isn't likely to be that large.

This game can play it safe and be boring.

Or it can literally be "Fanservice: the Game" and appeal to as many Sonic fans as possible.

Which one sounds better? Because "Fanservice: the Game" would have as many characters and tracks as they can fit in. Staying safe with content is a major detriment that I'm sure SEGA and Sonic Team are aware of.
