@Mayor DNice to see that particular consent about the old stages; I'm actually eating your footage now. Mothers Canyon (the second Planet Wisp track) really does look rather bland. There are a lot of straightways that seem to be designed solely for slingshots. It's not very exciting.

Also something I don't think you noticed - you shouldn't try to take the off-road technique shortcuts or obstacle-laden power shortcuts if you're in the highest position for your team. You'll end up leading your teammates into danger, or force the out of your slip stream. I hadn't considered that before. It's an interesting balance to consider how you lead your team.

Oh yeah, there is one other thing which might be a problem.

The online is spit between Ranked and Casual so the player base is split by default, then there are 3 main online modes to select which again will split the online crowd.

Have a nasty feeling this will impact the online popularity for some versions of the game.

It's probably the worst track out of the entire racing series.

It's just incredibly boring when you hit that section with nothing on it.

Look at the shape of the map - it's mostly just an elongated 0 shape. A few of the other new tracks are like that too. Boo's House in particular has a lot of straightways .

They need to make a list of characters to get rid of, mainly Silver, Blaze, Shadow, The Deadly 6, Orbot, Cubot, the Wisps...

Hmhm... How about a big fat NO? Just because you don't care for them doesn't mean they should be removed from the entire series. And your arguments for why they should be removed are poor at best especially as it reeks of bias. Knuckles is another character that has no good reason to remain around just like characters such as Shadow, yet I don't see you including him in your list of characters that no longer add anything to the stories. Sonic is never going to be a story matters first series, so there is zero reason to permanently remove any character from the series just because they don't serve a massively huge story point in being around anymore. Furthermore Blaze is my favorite character in this whole bloody series... If they removed her, then no joke I would toss this series in the trash far as my interaction with it.

Also I find this all funny considering you are the same guy who was trying to argue in the past that it doesn't need to be logical that Sonic and gang ride in cars when it feels out of character, and the only thing that mattered to you for it to happen was the fact it is silly good fun.

It flat-out doesn't matter if trash review outlets like IGN hates Sonic friends for the most shallow of reasons as they do. Their opinions are awful and in no way favors the Sonic fanbase. SEGA should be more smart with how they use their characters in the Sonic series I would agree... But just getting rid of characters for the sake of it and probably limiting it down to just Sonic and Eggman and maybe 2 others is pointless and makes nothing better.

As a side note: Sonic and Blaze are friends. She doesn't require a giant plot device to take a break and go hang out in his world, and it is easy for her to do so too as it has been said multiple times even by SEGA that Blaze has mastered the art of dimensional travel after Sonic Rush and can freely travel at any time.

Also stop treating her as a Sonic 06 character. That is not the game she originated from. And continuing to act like she is a awful character simply because she appeared in that game is terrible reasoning. Blaze is the 1st or 2nd top popular female character in the series regardless, it is debatable if she is more popular then Amy, but they are pretty close together and that says a lot considering she mostly gets sidelined to spinoffs.

Say that the story was an after thought all you want.

This is still in my opinion the best written sonic game. I love every character in this game. If the story is bad cuz nobody had to fight a monster of the week or some deep dark story wasn't here, then it doesnt mean the story is bad, it means you dont like silly lighthearted stories.

Side by side comparison of the PS4 and Switch versions of TSR. Besides the halved framerate and very very slightly pared back shadows, I'm hugely impressed at how close the Switch version is to the other console versions. Can't wait to see how the PS4 Pro and XB1X handle it.

Wouldn't you prefer if they had cut-scenes or comic-style transitions like Black Knight? or even 2d cutscenes by Tyson Hesse? Would have been a little bit better for me.

From what I’ve heard, there’s little content compared to transformed. Personally, if that’s the case, I wouldn’t exactly call that a small degree of difference in quality.

Gameplay courtesy of me.

Yes my copy arrived mega early!

Initial thoughts.

It's good, very good, not as good as Transformed, but we're talking like a small degree here. Whilst I miss the non Sonic characters and the transformed ability (I miss it a lot) the game for what it is is very good.

The tracks, so far I've only found one I really don't like, and it's because it has a really long moment where nothing really happens on it. It's the one where giant mother Wisp follows you.

Knuckles has THE BEST dialogue by far, especially when he cries out that he's a bird and screams when he has his ultimate move.

It takes A LONG time to unlock everything, I was playing for 1 hour 15min and hadn't unlocked any other characters and only raced against one other team.

Things I don't like.

In GP races you can't swap characters after a race ends, you're stuck until the end of the GP.

The loot box system. (Skip to 1:19:30 in the video to see this)

This mod unlock system is a loot box system, there is no other way to describe it. Whilst the drop rates are very generous, I got a lot of legendary items, I also got A HELL OF A LOT of temporary single use items, nearly 50% of the boxes I opened where those.

Things that could make it better

Fashion mode. Let me pick mods for my car, but let me either have default or more control over their performance, I want to make my racer unique without having a speed penalty.

Criticisms which really don't mean anything anymore.

The returning tracks: Yeah they're similar in layout to the previous games, but you now have this completely unique and different gameplay mechanic which totally changes how you approach the course, such as your racing line, when to use your special moves, items etc. It's pretty much a new course.

In game radio: Its barely noticeable.

Overall:

It's a really fun game, definitely worth your time.

Any questions?

Not that this adds much, but I completely agree with the majority here, especially with the mod side of things.

Whilst they are a sweet bump up in customisation from previous games, it’s a pain that some of the more aesthetically pleasing items don’t match what I want from how they change the Kart handling.

Mothers Canyon... for me it’s not the worst, but you’re right that the stretch is dull and hinges on the spectacle of mother wisp loitering around. Also the twisty tunnel is a little confusing to navigate - it’s too dark for one thing and I constantly confuse the moss as an element that is going to slow me down if I’m a speed type.

I’m still 50/50 on the returning tracks. As I mentioned a few pages back they look unashamedly gorgeous... But I personally don’t feel that fit the style of this game quite right when I play these. The team element changes things up enough so that they feel different to play compared to the original all stars game... buuut track design wise? They fall quite far behind new course designs created for this title

I find myself sighing whenever a Seaside Hill Zone track is next up to play, I just don’t think they should be here - the one track of the litter from All Stars Racing that might have worked well for teams is also absent in favour of a retooled track from Transformed (ironically now less fun to play because a third of the track is missing) which is a crying shame.

On the flip side, I was not looking forward to the Casino Park Levels... but man I can’t deny I really enjoyed these. I think perhaps Bingo Party should have been replaced though (as it’s the least interesting of the three) and swapped out for Galactic Parade. Especially considering Pinball Highway now takes place in outer space. The other tracks per zone in this game have a progressional element to where we head next, so that does feel like a missed opportunity.

Yet to play Sky Deck, Dark Arsenal, or Turbine Loop so I can’t comment on those atm.

It appears a number of us that pre-ordered we’re lucky enough to receive it 4-5 days in advance. It’s not uncommon with pre-orders for this to happen and just depends on the retailer who ships it at the end of the day.

Official release date is still next Tuesday though.

Not really surprising seeing as how the game isn't even out yet officially.

No early pre-order shipment for me. Still waiting on my copy.

Don't companies usually ban players who pop up online with copies that break street dates?

I'm for the most part enjoying the writing shockingly. It's almost if instead of making it about memes, dumb jokes, and trends you can have actual fun characters. Really sad this is the modern Sonic game that's light hearted, that's closest to what I'd like. If only other modern games and Boom had taken notes here. Even Silver is fun. I love how he is an unintentional buzz kill to Sonic. He's so modest. So much so Sonic wants him to trash talk and when Silver tries to do as Sonic says, it's too late XD. This is what I like. Character humor. That's what I want when it comes to comedy.

My only down note is Eggman sucks lol humor. I let it slide mostly cause it's a racing game, but still it's kinda sad he apparently sucks at literally everything. So as an antagonist he does nothing for me outside of some good lines.

Spoiler

I really like how they do the Dodonpa (Which makes me think of the Crane School technique) obviously bad guy thing, and instead make it so we only think he is. It's a racing game lol, story is always bland and easy to read. But nope he's good. He's not pure per say as he's kinda nuts, but it's for a good cause. I especially like how BIG is the one who is right and has a good point. I just dislike the comment that he says "I am right?" It kinda makes it sound like he knows he's wrong but says this stuff anyways....I would have prefered "Really, you believe me."

So I got into a few online games.... there are some issues...

Basically, there is a set minimum time to start a game and you cannot speed through it, even the results screen, so you're waiting a while for races to both start and finish before you return to the lobby and start again.

You can end up in a race against two human players on the same team... if this happens... Yeah you're completely screwed.

But... for the fun thing... and spoiler because it's a big spoiler if it's not been revealed yet.

Spoiler

You can have a race full of Big the Cats! Yes every player can pick the same character!

Also there is this system called 'commend', when you finish the race the game identifies players who performed the best in a number of stats, like players taken out, fastest speed, number of items passed.

You can if you like 'commend' a player for how they did... But I have absolutely no idea what this does, even if you get the most commendations (like I did) I didn't see or notice anything like a reward.

Isn't that the case with all multiplayer games like this? No way any AI partner is going to hold a candle to a team of humans working together. That's the price you pay for striking out on your own in a co-op racer.

Best case scenario, you could implement some kind of matchmaking to where solo players only face other solo's, but that would also cut the player base down in any given lobby - so I could see why that wouldn't be as appealing to develop.

Going back very briefly to mission/story mode. Some genius thought it was clever to make the story segments optional. This is great in theory, ...however I went through half the campaign wondering why there wasn’t much in the way of a story going on until I realised you have to press square to view/watch any scenes when proceeding. If you press ‘X’ like a normal person it will skip and go straight to the mission. I don’t know how they got that wrong.

I spent this last half an hour having to go through everything I missed which involved pressing square to load up the mission to get to the cutscene, which straight after loads the race, and then there’s also extra dialogue or banter just before before a race begins too. Then I quit the mission to go back to the map. Rinse and repeat about 15 times. Load times aren’t long, but it was still a pain.

Oh my god, really? ...REALLY? I wondered why I wasn’t getting any cutscenes since the beginning after racing nearly to the end of section 2. I didn’t even notice any button option for the story. I’m gonna have to go back through and figure out which button activates the story sections on Switch 😕

It should say at the bottom, but I just can’t understand the decision behind it (although I’m sad the same thing happened to you, I’m glad I’m not a fool for not being the only one realising sooner).

There's a pretty obvious reason for the button thing.

X = No

Can’t tell if serious or not. Haha.

In honestly weather you are playing on PS4 or Switch it will say right at the bottom in small text but it is not a great indicator. There isn’t like a sub menu to proceed to skip the story for example once you activate a mission which might have been better.

No, It’s just weird that ‘X’ on PS4 or ‘A’ on Switch is the button they chose for skipping cutscenes to play a mission. Where as ‘Square’ on PS4 or ‘x’ on Switch is the button to press to view things to progress before a mission. It feels like they got it backwards when you consider the normalcy of input commands players are used to in this day and age.

One of the first things I noticed watching footage of the game is that there's an option to progress through Adventure mode either with or without the story. Maybe the buttons could have been the other way around or there could have been an alternative method employed, but I think it's sufficiently clear and obvious the way it is.
