Team Sonic Racing - Reveal Trailer

I feel that from the get-go there was no chance of any obscure or old classic characters making it into this. We're definitely not anywhere near close to the point where something like that could be realistically anticipated or expected from a Sonic "anything" in my opinion. Mighty and Ray coming back as extras in a 2D Sonic game solely based on the Classic Aesthetic they originated from is still something of an outlier for the series. It may open the door for more stuff like that in the future, probably (maybe), but something like that happens slowly.  It would have been odd for them to just immediately shower us with stuff like Tails Doll and Metal Knuckles, two characters that (regardless of Sonic R and Sonic memes) haven't been relevant in years. I never thought Mighty, Ray, and Fang's faces being on some background posters in Generations was meant to stretch anything beyond a neat call-back. I'm still surprised Mighty and Ray being in Mania is a thing in fact. 

Truthfully, I don't have any real desire to see them or any obscure or old characters return though. I suppose that's just my obsessive compulsive desire to just have something focused on the modern characters  and just run with that without any kitchen sinks thrown in. If this were a Classic focused game I'd want the same thing for the Classic characters probably. I don't have any desire to see Modern Sonic appear in Mania or Mania Adventures after all. I guess that's just how big my desire to see these two worlds stay as far away from each other as humanly possible is; it's so notable that I don't even want to see it in a spin-off game apparently. It's not even like it would ruin anything if they were there. I just don't want to see it I guess.

I'd blame Forces for that but honestly I only really tolerated it in Generations because it was the 20th Anniversary and a cute idea at the time. 

There's also the fact that I was incredibly pessimistic about how many characters in the Modern era we were even going to get. Perhaps I was being melodramatic thinking it was just going to be the usual six characters they always use with a dash of Metal Sonic but being a fan of this series doesn't inspire too much faith lately. 

I'm excited for this though. I can't wait to run other Sonic characters off the road. I love those guys but when I playing as them I'm going to be a colossal ass to them all for my amusement.

Where were these people during Sonic Drift, or Sonic Drift 2, or the entire Riders series (with hoverboards), or All Stars Racing, or All Stars Racing Transformed?
Yeah I definitely want an on foot Sonic racing game that takes into account his canon ground speed, where I can press forward once and win every race in two seconds. That sure would be fun and not defeat the entire purpose of a racing game at all.

I should be used to hearing that. Clearly it's the opposite for me. Especially when it comes to Blaze and Cream. Silver has endeared himself to me a bit more over the years and Big honestly doesn't feel like someone I have to worry about regardless.

You know, this whole situation reminds me of the way I used to think when I was a kid. I got into the series through the characters I knew from Adventure 2, Heroes, and Sonic X and had a great amount of admiration for them (less so when it came to Cream and Big but not to an extreme extent). So when the Chaotix and Omega stopped showing up after Shadow the Hedgehog and I randomly started seeing Silver and Blaze appear as playable characters in spin-offs like the Riders series, the Olympics, and the party modes for the storybook games instead of them I began to unfairly blame their absence on Silver and Blaze and got annoyed whenever I saw them. They were characters from games I had either never played (the Rush series) or didn't like (Sonic 06) but they were more popular and the jealousy just simmered.

I never outright “hated” them though. I had enough self-awareness to realize that my frustration was most likely coming from an unfair place but it wasn’t something I ever really chilled out on until the characters started to get more equal treatment with Colors DS, Generations, and onward. Most likely because it felt like everyone didn’t matter now.

Still though, the poor kid hasn’t had a solo playable appearance since… Knuckles Chaotix, I think, which would be the game he debuted in. Unless you want to count the mobile games. It's such a comparably shittier situation but I think the ultimate laxative on top of the shit sundae  would be to have Vector and Espio playable but Charmy as the flag boy. I'd rather none of the Chaotix get in than to see that. That would just inherently signal Charmy out as no longer being equal to even his own team members and it'd be something that was now openly acknowledged by the game to be the case too. My heart wouldn't be able to take that.

Big's been treated better honestly. The comics never thought it'd be a good idea to give HIM brain damage...

I'm really sorry for for making you feel bad, but you are taking this a little too personally, like jeez, what you just said  just doesn't make sense. I chose my list for 15 characters. If there were 20 I would love if all of them were playable, but I wouldn't mind if Charmy was an npc helping Espio and Vector. All of this worrying about Charmy is kinda unnecessary. I bet he will be there helping someway. Like... Of course he will not get straight up disqualified, like what lol

You didn't make me feel bad and I wasn't "taking it personally". I didn't think there was anything in there that suggested I was.  I was just sharing an old story about the way I used to feel about situations like this as well as talking about how certain other situations would hypothetically make me feel in the long run. I do tend to ramble a bit, so maybe you thought I was telling you all that because I was "triggered" or something but I assure you I wasn't.

I DO feel like what I was saying did make sense though. I'm not sure what part of it didn't.

This cast list should be as exclusive as possible...so nobody gets what they want.

 

15 characters? Just do what Sonic Riders did and make every other character that's not Sonic and Shadow into an E-10000000000 robot. Blandness at the very best.

Oh yeah. Not for nothing, I wasn't even expecting that we'd get 15. I was hoping things would just work themselves out in a way that landed everyone at least being thrown some sort of a bone since Iizuka outright stated some years ago at this point that the spin-offs are basically the only real thing to look forward to when it comes to the extended cast being playable again. I'm paraphrasing but that's basically what he said. No matter what, at least two characters from the main cast iare being left out here.

The Heroes Cast + Silver and Blaze. Boom. That's it. Easy. You're done. That's 16 characters. Instead we've got 15 and one of them is an Egg Pawn so... fingers crossed I guess.

Despite all the hullabaloo about the 15 characters, I think I'd ultimately be alright. 

I'm a little more interested in the stage selection right now. Seeing Planet Wisp again didn't do anything for me personally. I'm hungry for Hang Castle man.

I know it won't happen but damn it's such a neat aesthetic. Falling off the track when it's upside down means falling into the moon. It's great!

Regarding the theories on teams being set versus mix-and-match, the sense I get is that teams will probably be set in the story mode, but for free play in the Team Mode you'll be allowed to mix and match - or else it wouldn't be very interesting.  Team Ultimates might be more defined and specialised for particular character combinations.

Also, looking again at the mysterious floating individual, quite aside from the obvious resemblance between what little we see of his face and that of Big the Cat, I just realised that his robes are leopard-print - another cat hint.  What a weird character.  So many Big hints, and yet I don't see how the character can be the same unless he were augmented by the Phantom Ruby or something.

Watch there be a 3 characters team as free DLC/bonus edition. Plus one more as paid DLC later. They did this for the other Sumo games. But they may be non Sonic characters, either SEGA or guests. After all, Forces' pre-order bonus was about other SEGA franchises.

Sumo digital being the developers gives me confidence that the game will be enjoyable (also hope that my boy Big is in). However I can't help to think that the team mechanic might had been a Sonic Team thing that was shoehorned at their suggestion.

Hopefully there will be an option to customize, since I really don't want to be stuck with the vanilla teams.

Also I don't mind a roster of 15 characters as long as the more relevant characters (Sonic, Tails, Amy, Eggman, Knuckles, Metal, etc) are represented as well as having a satisfying number of racing tracks.

I want to be optimistic and say that the standard game will likely allow for different customized teams, the story will be obviously the usual Hero, Dark and Rose, but there may be interactions between teams, so it could be good! No Babylon this time, I think.

EDIT: sorry, apparently other people already guessed this in previous posts.

Now that I think, since the game seems to be team based, 15 characters may mean 5 teams of 3 characters each. Hero/Sonic, Dark, Rose and Chaotix are a given IMO, the last team may be a new team with Blaze, Silver and, I don't know who else.

It makes me think that bad guys (Eggman, Metal Sonic and maybe Infinite) may not be in the starting roster, they may be a secret unlockable team, or a DLC... this or they are optimizing teams by replacing characters (for example, Eggman in Team Dark instead of Omega, Blaze in Team Rose instead of Big... etc. but I have absolutely no idea in what team Silver may end if this is true).

I hope at least the Heroes and Generations cast will be in the game, minus classic Sonic obviously. Oh well, I wouldn't mind a Classic Sonic+Mighty+Ray DLC, as long as they are additional and won't take away slots from the 15 characters thing.

I've changed my mind, there is surely a 4th team, considering we have 12 players as beginners/starters. Yeah, probably 4 teams, but what's the last one? It's anyone's bet.

Team Hero - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles

Team Dark - Shadow, Rouge, Egg Pawn or Eggman

Team Rose - Amy, Cream, Big or Vector

FOURTH TEAM IDEAS:

Team Chaotix - Espio, Charmy, Vector (depends if he is in Team Rose or not)

Team Babylon - Jet, Wave, Storm

Team Metal - Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, Metal Knuckles

Team Dimension: Blaze, Silver, Sticks

I really don't know, Chaotix I would rule out, because Vector may be in Team Rose and Charmy probably is a NPC. Babylon Rogues I would also rule out, because they would have been in the teaser but Shadow got the role of "main rival" instead of these guys from the Riders series, so yeah. It could be either Team Metal or Team Dimension. I don't think there is a 5th team though.

I have my doubts that they'd dreg up the thing with Vector being a part of Team Rose considering it was a thing that only happened in Sonic Free Riders, a largely forgotten game that came out exclusively for a dead peripheral for the X-Box. They'll remember their own dead peripherals and the games on those before they remember the whole of Free Riders, much less that Vector was on Team Rose. Plus, if they did the Vector on Team Rose thing and left Espio and Charmy out, wouldn't that leave a gap for another team? Would Big, Silver, and Blaze form a team then? That sounds a bit weird. 

I guess based on this information I'd probably suspect it might line up like this:

Team Sonic - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles

Team Dark - Shadow, Rouge, Omega

Team Rose - Amy, Silver, Blaze

Team Chaotix - Vector, Charmy, Espio

Team Eggman - Eggman, Metal Sonic, Egg Pawn

Then perhaps if people cared Big and Cream could be DLC. I suppose. No matter what, I don't see them getting rid of Silver and Blaze.

So long as they don't fuel my silent rage and replace a member of Team Chaotix, I'm golden though. 

God, I hope Mighty's not in it. I hate him so much.

There's also the fact even Free Riders treats Vector being on Team Rose as a bizarre one off thing and not a recurring team up.
