Mapping Mobius: Classic Era

With Mania Plus coming closer and closer and franchise now officially split into two continuities, I decided to take closer look at all of the classic games. I guess I was curious just how weird Mobius is if I accept floating platforms and deserts next to snowy areas as 'something normal'. I'm here to share my 'research' to see if fandom forgot as much surprising things as I did.

(Did you know that in Mean Bean Machine you play as roboticized bean that kept it's free will and wants to save it's brothers, with it's name being terrible pun "Has Bean"? I swear I'm not making this up.)

But let's get to work:

0) Christmas Island

Spoiler

Christmas Island is Sonic's place of birth. As far as we know, it didn't appeared in any game and we know nothing about it.

1) Sonic 1: South Island

Spoiler

If you peeked below, then yes, Classic Worlds appears to be made up of only island. Kinda like Blaze Dimension, if you're in the mood for conspiracy theories.

According to manual legends South Island is where Chaos Emerald are hidden. Their power actually causes island to move. That's pretty cool, also it explains how Green Hills keep popping up in later games: it moves wherever it's needed, especially if it's drawn to  Chaos Emeralds (Of course Forces messes it up, but whatever, classic world). Maybe that's why Sonic likes this places so much? Because it's the fastest island on Mobius, even if by default?

Judging by the first game, South Island is pretty normal place, with green areas, some lava, some lakes. Half of the zones are highly mechanized by Eggman (Spring Yard, Star Light, Scrap Brain), but all of this feels kinda unfinished. Look at Spring Yard, is that complete casino to you? Comparing it to later games I like to think Eggman didn't had time to properly pollute this place, at least not in Sonic 1.

There are very strong evidence of long lost civilization living here once. Totems in Green Hills and ruins in Labyrinth/Marble zone sure weren't build by Joe Sushi or Porker Lewis. Guy calling himself "The Sega Scourge" theorized that Babylonians where involved here. His logic isn't faulty, but based on somewhat flimsy evidence. To be fair I must admit that bird imagery appears on both South Island (Labyrinth) and West Side Island (boss in Aquatic Ruins, totems).

South Island is also the main setting of many Game Gear games: Sonic 1, 2, Chaos, Blast and Labyrinth. They add more Eggman bases, jungle, desert, etc. Nothing really worth mentioning. Although, in Sonic Chaos Eggman steals one emeralds and South Island begins to sink. Looking at later adventures, I really hope they fixed that somehow.

2) Sonic 2: West Side Island (The Illusionary Island)

Spoiler

West Side Island is where, according to legends, Chaos Emeralds are hidden... umm again? Okay, legends aren't usually very accurate, maybe it just refers to 7th Chaos Emeralds, one that is missing from all adventures on South Island. More so, we know that West Side Island was once home to mighty civilization that achieved prosperity thanks to emeralds but later abused it's power and lost their prosperity overnight. Gods (yes, this game refers to gods) taken emeralds away, sealing then in depth of the island.

Environment wise, Eggman clearly spend more time and effort terra-forming this island. Between Chemical Plant, Oil Ocean, Metropolis, ever important Casino Night  and his two flying ship (Wing Fortress and Death Egg) this is easily his biggest Empire in classic games (maaaybe except Little Planet). What surprises me are other zones. If that Gods-angering civilization was so big, why only one zone (Aquatic Ruins) has any evidence of them, when South Island had 3 zones? Where all the ruins go?

Spoiler

image.png.c4ed5e81d2f0edab3218539153b7ed0e.png

Ooooo.

I don't know if it was intentional or coincidence, but it makes to much sense for me. Legends say about dispreading riches, emeralds and getting buried underground. And you visit this zone? Though Mystic Caves (which Eggman digged while looking for emeralds) and "The Pit" which is logically the deepest point on West Side Island.  It only makes sense that Hidden Palace was buried by gods as a punishment for mortal's sins. Who knows, maybe those fake Master Emeralds are what offended the gods?

3) Sonic 3: Angel Island (Floating Island)

Spoiler

Angel (or should still call it Floating?) Island is home of Knuckles the Echidna, who guards Master Emerald.... and Seven Chaos Emeralds.

I'm throwing my hands in the air. I give up, white flag, capitulation. I know Sonic isn't best when it comes to consistency, but those are main three games. Why no one can can keep basic facts straight? I understand that Emeralds might teleport from one island to the other or maybe that they are in Special zones and West Side/ South Island just have portals to there. But this time manual (Japanese) is clear: Knuckles was guarding ME and Emeralds were sitting on the pillars, suddenly earthquake and they gone. How is it possible? It's not even consistent with game itself, as Sonic has the emeralds at start. Honestly, I don't blame anyone who once thought there are more than 7 emeralds. Between their location, colors, shapes, numbers in games, it's easy mistake to make.

Another interesting thing from manual is that Knuckles mistakes Death Egg for the egg of a Legendary Dragon that will bring great disaster. Now, with the future knowledge, we know that this dragon is Perfect Chaos... but why legend speaks of the egg? Is it Master Emerald? Does guardian of ME knows about great monster, knows about importance of Emeralds, but doesn't know the connection between the two? Or maybe we should expect some less metaphorical egg and less metaphorical dragon to appear in the future? IDK, I'm spit-balling here.

Rest of the lore is more-less SA1. Echidnas were a mighty race, thanks to "power stones", elders tried to take that power for themselves, the energy went awry and echidnas were wiped out. Later gods raised Angel Island to the skies and restored small part of the civilization on it.

That's a lot and we didn't even looked at the island itself. Angel Island float in the air... but not at the start of the game. Be honest with me, how many of you noticed that in the game intro the floating island doesn't float? How many of you knew that crashing Death Egg lowered it in the ocean? ... ok, now how many of you noticed that in Sonic Mania the island is still in the god damn ocean?

The island was barely touched by Robotnik. Was it by short time or his uneasy alliance with Knuckles, Eggman build only two zones: Launch Base (makes sense, it was the closest) and Carnival Night. Good to see Eggman keeps his priorities straight (I suppose someone else could build it, but who, ancient echidnas? And who other than Eggman would be evil enough to create "The Barrel"?). Flying Battery doesn't count since it's a ship, so other zones have only Eggman badniks, rest of defenses are probably echidna-made.

With that said, Angel Island trumps other two island in fantastic settings. Sacred ruins that float, underground sewers that keeps the whole island irrigated, giant mushrooms. Probably the weirdest place is Sandopolis though. Let's ignore how close it is to Ice Cap (normal for Sonic world) or that ghost exist: it has hieroglyphs with humanoids on it. Does that mean that humans build it before echidnas moved in?  Sounds crazy, but ghosts don't give us any answer (Pyramids in SA2 will have the same problem). But we know for a fact that Angel Island was part of a continent once. Granted, this Two Worlds Theory makes it weird, but we know for a fact that Chaos Control can transport entire islands or giant comet, why not single zone? In SA1 Echidna ruins stand right next to human city. Last argument: why would anthropomorphic animal worship Egyptian gods, when most of them are humans with animal heads? It doesn't seem logical.

Angel Island is also heavily implies to be a main setting of Sonic Triple Trouble. No manual specifies the setting and Knuckles is known to leave the island from time to time, but only Angel Island have those switches he pushed between stages in S3&K

4) Sonic CD: Little Planet (Miracle Planet)

Spoiler

Let's start with the obvious question, does Little Planet and Never Lake are part of the island?  I really can't tell. It would fit with the rest and Opening Screen (the one with Sonic wiggling his finer) shows a lot of water... but that's not proof. I looked at the intro, Sonic 4, Sonic Mania, US manual, Japanese Manual, Sonic, Retro, Sonic News Network. And I found nothing. No proof one way or the other. If I had to decide I would say it floats over Christmas Island, birthplace of Sonic. It would fit with Amy also being there and being a hedgehog (I'm pretty sure she doesn't usually lived on Little Planet. Animals appear on little Planet only in Past and God Future, so every Present natural inhabitant of the planet was captured or destroyed). Sadly, looking at the intro it's far more believable that this is continent (after all S3&K manual confirms there is at least one). EDIT: Yes, it's an island. See 10) Sonic 4.

Surprisingly there is little to talk about the planet itself. It's just so strangely unworldly that it's hard to come to any conclusions about it and time travel doesn't help. Is Collision Chaos natural phenomenon? Was wacky Workbench Or Quartz Quadrant build by Eggman or someone else? We know for sure something lives on Little Planet. Tidal Tempest aside, in Stardust Speedway bad future is a giant Eggman statue, but in Good Future there is a temple (not to mention secret angel statue in Workbench). So there must be some civilization here (more sophisticated than critters stepped by Metal Sonic), but we don't really know anything about them. Who knows, maybe they have something to do with UFOs in Special Stages. Besides, have you looked at special stage backgrounds?

Spoiler

image.png.98acb4a2f6b67f4d654f5f1dc73e9814.png

In pretty much all games Special Stage are pure insanity, geometrical shapes with random nonsense in the background. But in few stages in CD there are clearly visible cities. One above is quite gorgeous. Is this where natives of Little Planet hide from Eggman? Or is it a future or past of Mobius? Who bloody knows, CD is perplexing enough without Special Stage weirdness (although I should mention that Nack the Weasel is said to live in Special Stage and in Triple Trouble those stages do look like a as some kind of temple).

EDIT: NEW INFORMATION ABOUT LITTLE PLANET LOCATION. SEE POINT 10) Sonic 4.

5) Sonic 3D Blast: Flickies Island

Spoiler

Flickies Island is obviously home of Flickes. Except not really, since they live in some other dimension and just visit Mobius like tourists via Warps Rings. And of course legends, probably made by World First Troll, say that Chaos Emeralds are here. Whatever.

Map in Sega Saturn version shows you clearly whole island, so you can see that this place is made of all Sonic tropes. Grass area, ruins, winter, volcano, pinball/carnival, eggman base, giant statue of Eggman that you must enter through his nose. All cliches accounted for.

Funny enough in Genesis version they show you island after defeating Eggman and most of the areas all gone. Does that mean Eggman actually made snow area?

Spoiler

image.png.4be9b130a73c7322104c2065b7886d79.pngimage.png.fb229e826304b1df4f64e5c7ccd7770f.png

He even moved volcano somehow! Ok, ok, I'm probably overthinking that.

Last two fun facts.
1) In first stage, Green Grove (Saturn version) you can see  little mammals, with hats, ropes and belt doing... something on the mountain walls. The point is they are first nameless mobian civilians in entire series. That or some weirdo loves to dress small animals and rope them to the walls.
2) According to manual second stage, the Rusty Ruins is in fact Atlantis. Yep, that's a thing.

6) Knuckles Chaotix : Isolated Island

Spoiler

(In US manual it's called Carnival Island, but I'm taking Japanese manual as canon here.)

This one is a doozy. Remember when Angel Island landed in ocean during S3&K? Apparently ME being so close to surface actually pulled out new island. Only that this island isn't new. It used to be part of echidna civilization. It just got sink after that whole thing with Chaos.

Following so far? Good let's talk about rings in this game.
- Golden Rings are Mobius currency/batteries, probably chaos based. No one knows what they are, they just are. I like to think they are Chaos Emerald by-product. That emeralds have so much power that they spontaneously create them in near region. Cute theory, but games like CD, Shuffle or Black Knight make it questionable.
- Warp Rings (sometimes called Giant/Special/Super) are teleportation device, usually to special stage, but there are plenty of exceptions. This game acts like the one used by echidna are somehow special, but I'm not clear on how.
- "small ring engraved with ancient characters" is something in both Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic 3 manuals mentioned. Apparently this was echidnas idea of a papyrus.
- Combine Ring is a blue power up, used in this game and Mania, combining all your smaller rings into bigger ones, easier to recover
- Sling Rings are the main gimmick of this game,  two rings connected by magical bond held by two people.
- Chaos Ring are the Warp Rings mutated by Master Emerald energy (there is more to "how this works" but it's convoluted, I'm not sure I get it). Basically a Chaos Emeralds for this game. Eggman believes that with them he could summon Master Emerald to himself.
- Dark Ring are Gold Rings/Warp Rings that Eggman mutated in a way similar to what happened to Chaos Rings. He uses them as a new power source for this machines. The warp variation was used on Metal Sonic, turning him into final boss of the game.

I REALLY hope I got all of his right. The point is this game is obsessed with rings. Not really sure why. Maybe this is place was where echidnas experimented with ring technology?

Geographically speaking, Carnival Island is almost completely covered by Newtrogic High Zone, place build by Eggman, There are no ruins, snow areas or volcanoes. Isolated Island is a tame forest, Botanic Base is greenhouse with really odd plants and rest is just a one big carnival, when Eggman's obsession went just a little too far.

7) Other Islands

Spoiler

This will be short, I'm tired.

Sega Sonic the Hedgehog takes place on Eggman Island, place slightly more dangerous to visit that god damn Silent Hill.
Spinball takes place on Mt. Mobius, volcano turned into giant roboticizer/ waste producing machine.
Skypatrol takes place on " Solitary" island, no official name. Nothing unusual  to report here, other than big number of rails.
Tails Adventure takes place on Cocoa Island, yet another home to Chaos Emeralds. I completely forgot that robot dog Tails builds in this game can turn into a submarine. Dr Light would be proud.
Sonic R (yes, game is canon. Look up BumbleKast Ep 22, minute 38:00) seems to take place on islands, but it's racing game, who knows. As far as I know it's only game with Egypt-themed stage with Mobian imagery, rather than humans. Go figure. I heard rumor that last stage suppose to take place inside the Emerald, but I didn't found a single official source claiming that.

I'm ignoring all the educational games (Sonic Schoolhouse), those with Sonic just slapped on them (Waku Waku Patrol Car), Mean Bean Machine is either canon with cartoon or Eggman tripping balls after drugs. I'm open to possibility that Drift games or Sonic Fighters are canon, but I'm raising my eyebrow on the locations in those games. Who paid for race track in space?

Well, I hope somebody enjoyed it. If this post gets enough "Thumbs Up" I may do a Modern Sonic version. If you think I missed something interesting please let me know.

EDIT: "Neo Classic" games added. Enjoy!

  8 ) Sonic Mania: ????

Spoiler
When the game came out I ignored the new zones, since I was certain everything was an illusion by Phantom Ruby. How else Sonic teleported from Oil Ocean to Lava Reef?
Well, since then new Zone transitions came out and we have an answer (flying submarine. Crazy, but fitting for Sonic), so I decided it's worth to at least consider the possibility that those 4 places are part of Sonic World and Lore.

Titanic Monarch was just a huge robot on Little Planet, simple as that (Egg Reverie appears to happen just outside).

Studiopolis clearly must be on West Side Island, near Chemical Plant to be exact. All the Eggman imagery makes it clear that he build it.

Similarly, Mirage Saloon was shown to be near the Oil Ocean. However, I don't think it was built by Robotnik. His face is on the train and giant sodas, items brought (same with Heavy King painting). But on walls or totem are mostly bird images (which just happens to fit with Aquatic Ruins and Labiryt Zone ornaments. Maybe this archipelago really was inhabited by Babylonians.) Besides, there are way too many plants or Indian-ish carpets to be created by Eggman. Maybe original occupants hanged those Wanted Posters for Bean, Bark, and Nack? (We do know that Eggman made ice cream parlor though).

And then we have the Press Garden, its location and origin being a complete mystery. Sonic got there from Flying Battery. So are they still on West Side Island or did the ship fly to the next destination (next Sonic is teleported to Little Planet, so no clue there)? Maybe we're on the Sonic Huge-Head Island from the opening screen? (My bet is on WSI, but we lack any leads).
Its purpose is described as "Eggman's propaganda printing press", but that clashes with ancient ruins aesthetic (and you know, pretty garden in Act 2). My guess is that Eggman is repurposing this place, originally made by some ancient civilization. The freezing machines and woodcutters in Act 2 imply that he's in middle of destroying all the plant life in there.

Lastly, I want to point out Special Stages. Just like in Sonic CD, some of it is random nonsense, but there are signs of civilization and life: ancient columns, trees, futuristic towers, flying pyramids and huge domed city on the top of a huge mushroom. Heck, there are fishes and birds, which clearly move.

9) Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventures: Neo South Island

Spoiler

I'm putting it here just for completion sake. It might be a bridge between Classic and Modern Sonic, but the plot is barely existing and all Zones are based on Sonic 1&2. I  can only speculate that Eggman found Island that reminded him of his past mischief, thus he rebuilt Chemical Plant, Casino Night and Wing Fortress due to some weird nostalgia (god knows he'll get nostalgic again and again in the future). Or maybe we're back to West Side Island, but then the first level's name (Neo South Island) is highly incorrect.

10) Sonic 4: Mirage Island (Be’en & Kalow)

Spoiler
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a name!!!!! The locations from both Sonic 4 episodes, the Never Lake and the fabled Little Planet are all part of the Mirage Island! How do I know? From here:

There is even some lore about island's past, how cool is that? If for some reason the link isn't working, here's the text

Spoiler

In a time long since forgotten, two small islands coexisted in harmony. Be’en, known for its rolling hills, and Kalow, an atoll of pristine lakes. The isle of Be’en had been slowly drifting towards its sister island, and so the two tribes strived to unite just as their land was.

One day, a small satellite appeared over the sky of Kalow, whom the locals took as a sign of the gods blessing them. Those of Be’en took great offense, saying they were both blessed. The unity that was to be their combined world instead became that of turmoil, what had been promised vanishing in an instant.

Thinking that their blessings would become evident if they made it to the mysterious land above, both peoples plotted to somehow make it up there. As the war raged, they made it to the surface, and discovered the secret this little planet held: the Time Stones.

Learning that these gems were able to control time itself, the warring tribes desires became dark. Seeking to slip into the past, they thought the best way to win was to stop the war from happening at all, erasing their enemies. When the stones made it to Earth and were used, the battle of a thousand years happened in but three seconds. The two civilizations thrived, died, and blinked into almost nothing.

With only the faintest hint that anyone once lived upon the land, the gods took back the Time Stones, making sure they were safe. As Be’en finally merged with Kalow, the Never Lake shimmered as the Little Planet disappeared back into the mysterious space it came from.

The names of the two tribes faded, and those who would later settle the whole of the isle would rename its rolling hills. Sensing in the air that something else once thrived there, the whispers of a forgotten past and a destined future inspired them to call their home Mirage Island.

If you want a better look at the Mirage Island, both games sported a map (granted it doesn't match Sonic CD intro, but I'm willing to overlook it. Maybe someone planted a lot of trees between Sonic CD and 4.)

Spoiler

image.png.d762d83644724b7da828000cd819dc26.png

Anyway, zones are classic Sonic tropes. Few Eggman constructions, grass, ice, and desert. Presumably Lost Labyrinth was made by civilization from Be’en (since this island had "rolling hills", like Splash Hills), while Sylvania Castle is what remains of Kalow tribe (since this island was known "pristine lakes", like Never Lake). Of course, both tribes screwed with time, so who knows what else was made by them (maybe city in the Casino Street)? After all, one of them was capable of creating the Hidden Treasure from Lost Labyrinth (the one Metal absorbs in his own episode).

6) Knuckles Chaotix : Isolated Island (Carnival Island in US)

  Hide contents

(I'm taking Japanese manual as canon here.)

Apparently this was echidnas idea of a book.
- Combine Ring is a blue power up, used in this game and Mania, combining all your smaller rings into bigger ones, easier to recover
- Sling Rings are the main gimmick of this game,  two rings connected by magical bond held by two people.
- Chaos Ring are they Warp Rings mutated by Master Emerald energy (there is more to "how this works" but it's convoluted, I'm not sure I get it).

  Hide contents

Sonic R (yes game is canon. Look up BumbleKast Ep 22, minute 38:00) seems to take place on islands, but it's racing game, who knows. As far as I know it's only game with Egypt-themed stage with Mobian imagery, rather than humans. Go figure. I heard that last stage suppose to take place inside the Emerald, but I didn't found a single official source claiming that.

If this post gets enough liked I may do a Modern Sonic version. If you think I missed something interesting please let me know.

What about the island shaped like Sonic’s Head from the Mania title screen? And a Dreamcast version would be interesting to cover, and separate from modern.

Did you know that in Mean Bean Machine you play as roboticized bean that kept it's free will and wants to save it's brothers, with it's name being terrible pun "Has Bean"? I swear I'm not making this up.

But first things first

1) Sonic 1: South Island

  Reveal hidden contents

If you peeked below, then yes, Classic Worlds seems to be made up of only island.

Half of the zones are highly mechanized by Eggman, but all of this feels kinda unfinished. Look at Spring Yard, is that complete casino to you? Comparing it to later games I like to think Eggman didn't had time to properly pollute this place, at least not in Sonic 1.

There are very strong evidence of long lost civilization living here once. Totems in green hills and ruins in labyrinth/marble zone.sure weren't build by Joe Sushi or Porker Lewis.

2) Sonic 2: West Side Island

  Hide contents

  Reveal hidden contents

image.png.c4ed5e81d2f0edab3218539153b7ed0e.png

Ooooo.

Obviously I can't prove anything, but it makes to much sense for me. Legends say about dispreading riches, emeralds and getting buried underground. And you visit this zone though Mystic Caves (which Eggman digged while looking for emeralds) and "The Pit" which is logically the deepest point on West Side Island.  It only makes sense that Hidden Palace was buried by gods as a punishment for mortal's sins. Who knows, maybe those fake Master Emeralds are what offended the gods?

3) Sonic 3: Angel Island

  Hide contents

Angel (or should still call it Floating?) Island is home of Knuckles the Echidna, who guards Master Emerald.... and Seven Chaos Emeralds.

I'm throwing my hands in the air. I give up, white flag, capitulation. I know Sonic isn't best when it comes to consistency, but those are main three games. Why no one can can keep basic facts straight? I understand that Emeralds might teleport from one island to the other or maybe that they in Special zones and West Side/ South Island just have portals to there. But this time manual (Japanese) is clear: Knuckles was guarding ME, Emeralds where sitting on the pillars, suddenly earthquake and they gone.

And who other than Eggman would be evil enough to create the Barrel?). Flying Battery doesn't count since it's a ship, so other zones have only Eggman badniks, rest of defenses are probably echidna-made.

With that said, Angel Island trumps other two island in fantasy setting.

4) Sonic CD: Little Planet (aka Miracle Planet)

  Hide contents

Sadly, looking at the intro it's far more believable that this is continent (after all S3&K says there is at least one).

Tidal Tempest aside, in Stardust Speedway bad future is a giant Eggman statue, but in Good Future there is a temple. So there must be some civilization here (more sophisticated than critters stepped by Metal Sonic), but we don't really know anything about them. Who knows, maybe they have something to do with UFOs in Special Stages. Besides, have you looked at special stage backgrounds?

  Hide contents

image.png.98acb4a2f6b67f4d654f5f1dc73e9814.png

In pretty much all games Special Stage are pure insanity, geometrical shapes with random nonsense in the background. But in few stages in CD there are clearly visible cities. One above is quite gorgeous. Is this where natives of Little Planet hide from Eggman? Or is it a future or past of Mobius? Who bloody knows, CD is perplexing enough without Special Stage weirdness (although I should mention that Nack the Weasel is said to live in Special Stage and in Triple Trouble those stages do look like a as some kind of temple).

5) Sonic 3D Blast: Flickies Island

  Reveal hidden contents

Well, to be fair, humans could potentially exist at some point in Classic's world. I mean, Eggman/Robotnik had to be born somehow, right?

And besides, it's kinda shown that most animals in Sonic's world either live in small treehouses or don't have a home at all.

Also, Mean Bean Machine COULD be canon, considering that Scratch (And I mean, SCRATCH, not the Sonic 2 "Clucker" that he was based on) appears in Spinball as a mass-produced badnik, and that Robotnik has a very DiC design in the GameGear version.

Chris (And most humans from X, now that I think about it) had quite a backlash tho.

Honestly, ShTH got a lot of characters wrong (Sonic being a happy/stupid goody two-shoes, who's just begging to be killed, Knuckles being a goddamn hypocrite, Eggman being a moronic old man and so on). Kinda weird that only the new ones were criticized.

With things like the special zone and little planet essentially warping into earth's orbit, it makes me think there was some sort of dimensional breach from the special zone where the chaos emeralds are that caused a ton of bizarre anomalies out there in the ocean such as surreal magic islands and talking animal people. Classic's world is rich with portals to the special zone all over the place.

The classic sonic world is a split version of moderns past(post gens, splits to mania instead of sonic 4) so by that context, yes the two worlds rule exists here as well, it’s not an explicit rule only for modern, but sonic as a whole. So it still applies to the topic. And even if it’s not confirmed, the discussion around if it applies is still allowed.:/

True. Sonic 3 manual claims Angel Island was once part of continent, so there is at least one.

So, village of inteligent beans is canon as well? Besides, Scrath in Spinball is parf of actual pinball table. You can tell, by Sonic reflection and hands on sides.

That's what I'm suspecting is the case as well. But if Two Worlds is still canon to classic then maybe they are just in different dimension.

Whichever is true, I'm suspecting that some kind of Chaos Control event happened in the past (similar to Sonic X) moving one some locations to different part of planet or dimension which is why there are human pyramids next to echinda ruins.

Heck, if we push this theory further, maybe this is why Zones exists. Maybe very long time ago Chaos Control happened on immense scale, mixing different geographical structure in most chaotic way.

But of course Chaos Control is part of Modern World. So maybe humans just lived on angel-part-of-continent, then echindas moved in and build their stuff, then it flied into the sky with pyramids still on it.

That or I'm over-thinking what artist put in a background of genesis game.
