One Thing I noticed about the Sonic games

Funnily enough, if you listen to the Werehog theme all the way through on the soundtrack in one go, it's a pretty damn awesome song. The mistake was that they made it start up every battle, rather than fade in and out. All you hear in the game is the first 30 seconds over and over again.

My only other dissapointment is that they did overuse the main theme way too much in the cut-scenes. They should have used some mixes of Endless Possibility for cut-scenes or certain menus. I mean, if you never watch the trailers, you wouldn't even know the final boss theme is a remix.

I'd also like to add one more vote to Sonic 3D's CD soundtrack. Absoloutely amazing. I dunno how anyone can like the whiny Mega Drive soundtrack more (it's an okay soundtrack, but hardly Jun Sunoue's finest work by a long shot).

Honestly I thought Adventure 2's soundtrack was fairly weak, a lot of the tracks, especially between Sonic, Tails, and Eggman especially sounded way too similar all the time. I think the best overall was Shadow's though. Not bad, but not as good as everyone makes out.

I liked Adventure 1's and 06's the best I think, they are diverse with techno, rock, orchestral, and are able to make each track suit levels just fine imo. Unleashed's soundtrack is also not as bad as people say it is, there are some truly stunning tracks on there such as Empire City Night Hub, and Jungle Joyride Night, as well as epic stuff like the Eggmanland ones. While some tracks are VERY forgettable, the rest is gold.

Classic games have awesome music too, but that goes without saying (Starlight, Chemical Plant, and Hydrocity :D), though I think both versions of Sonic CD somewhat eclipse those, especially due to quality, with favourites like most of the Stardust Speedway, Metallic Madness, and all of the US Good Future musics.

Sonic 1 Master System also has an epic 8 bit soundtrack, and I await the never-coming remixes of classic tracks such as the Scrap Brain one (again, a stunning track). The second game also had good ones like Aqua Lake and Green Hills, and the Game Gear version had a really catchy boss theme. The rest were decent but forgettable imo.

Rush's music was okay (Vela Nova and Dead Line's were imo easily the best), but I thought Rush Adventure went more to form on catchy and techno melodies - HELLO THERE CORAL CAVE. That quality of music on a DS is amazing. Also such melodies and beats as Sky Baylon, Pirates' Island, WHISKER AND JOHNNY, and especially Plant Kingdom.

Advance's had okay music, but the third game had a beautiful soundtrack (aside from Sunset Hill's screechy shit), what with stuff like Twinkle Snow, Chaos Angel, and Nonaggression.

But yeah, I think Sonic has always had good music, just there's so many that many are forgotten outside the classics I reckon, and newer stuff is horribly underrated.

Sonic Unleashed, SA 1 & 2, and Sonic 06 had have the most unique soundtracks as far as the 3D games go.

I don't get the hate on Unleashed soundtrack bar the Werehog's Tune, because unless folks are hating it for not having enough rock (which I've heard from a few people) the Soundtrack was very ethnic as far as I'm concerned. Oriental music fiting in with Asian settings, Jazzy tunes fitting the Urban NYC settings, Arabic music harmonizing the desert sand stages, the tribial sounds of the african based stage, etc. Rock music wouldn't have been a wise choice to use for most of the stages in Unleashed, or people just can't appreciate a more ethnic based soundtrack.

The hip-hop in SA2 I loved, but the lyrics need more work. Although a lot of folks don't like it, many of them are associating the hip-hop too much with the stuff they hear elsewhere, which they know very little about it overall.

Then there's the Classic soundtrack, and what I love about the Classic soundtrack is its adaptability to other genres. I guess I listen to OC Remix too much. :D

Yep sonic music is awesome, the only soundtrack that i hated in the sonic series was unleashed.....god...just....god.

Sonic 06 or Heroes had the best soundtrack (non-vocaly)

But SA2 defenatly wins in the vocal song catagory

Mainly the song I hated in Unleashed was that one that constantly plays during the Werehog stages. It is so annoying.

Sonic Adventure 2, to me, has the best soundtrack, both vocal and instrumental. Heroes' soundtrack was kind of meh, some songs were good, and others annoyed me to no end.

I like Fly in the Freedom... And Believe in Myself... ;.;

EDIT: Shadow needs moar Techno! :D

Techno FTW." Fly in the Freedom" has to be one of the most original Sonic themes ever. I've never liked "Believe in Myself". However, the original SA themes completely destroy their SA2 remakes. Especially the original "It Doesn't Matter". SA2's was too happy and pop-like. I HATE it.

I love that version of Death Chamber. It's extra jazzy. I don't know if I agree with the music getting better. It's a hit and miss thing with me. But I'm very picky with music....

Sonic Adventure = Awesome

Sonic Adventure 2 = Awesome

Sonic Heroes = Fail.... horribly.

Sonic Riders = In the middle

Sonic Riders 2 = Mediocre

Sonic 06 = FAIL. FAIL. FAIL!!! I don't care what anyone says! Besides the original "Dreams of an Absolution" and "Aquatic Base 1", it's all boring! And no that "Solaris Phase" song is not made of "epic win"!!!! It's an orchestrated version of "His World"!!! Who cares!!!!

Sonic and the Secret Rings = Fail.

Sonic Unleashed = AMAZING. You can feel that they placed so much effort into this music. I just downloaded "Jungle Joyride Night" and all I could say was, "WHY DIDN'T I GET THIS BEFORE!?!?!"

Sonic and the Black Night = It fits the game, but that's it. However, "Knight of the Wind" is uber.

Aw, I like the Heroes Soundtrack! It's a bit samey and dull, but there are some really nice tracks and most importantly, it suited the game. Which is all I ask for.

You couldn't of been any wrong, the whole sonic 06 ost was filled with epicness.

The inlet and The chase are just awesome.

And the Satsr songs really stood out and put you in the mood.

I'm sorry, but the 06 soundtrack is simply overrated in my eyes. I've heard it and I just DON'T get it. I found the level music to be boring for the most part and the vocal songs do nothing for me. Minus "Dreams of an Absolution", I'll give it to 06 for that one song. It's simply amazing, especially since when I first heard it I blew it off but I just could NOT put it out of my head.

None of the music in 06 really stands out to me. It's just some lame rock music, some lame techno ("White Acropolis"? Ha, don't make me laugh. That is NOT an amazing techno/trance song), horrible vocals, and whatever I'm missing I just don't remember 'cause the soundtrack was laaaaame! XD

And it's not simply because the game is bad. I love going through Sonic music, even if the game was bad. But this OST does nothing for me. Maybe I'm missing something. Sorry, it's not the best in the series. At least in my mind.

The mood?! SatSR has annoying music. I thought "Let the Speed Mend It" was cool but it's repetitive as all hell. And I've never been a fan of "Seven Rings in Hand". I mean, "Rock the Place" is one of the most annoying songs ever. They couldn't do better than some rock music and some guy saying "Who's going to rock the place!?!?!"

Eh, well, no one ever agrees with me... so go figure. :P

I actually I agree, I am not a big fan of the STH06 soundtrack, it may just be because it reminds me of the game but I would say it was the weakest (maybe Heroes as well) of the main series soundtracks.

Sonic Unleashed on the other hand was amazing, the fact that Sonic has a main theme that is also in other music parts, such as the boss battles, so its not just the boss's theme its more of the battle theme which is cool.

I know above it was said that people hate the constant Sonic theme... why? I mean they do this in movies and it works, and its a great tune. If you listen to the whole thing it is up there with Mario Galaxy's soundtrack, and is it me or is there a bit of Endless Possibilities in it ("and how will I know when to get there")

I personally absoloutely love Sonic and the Secret Rings soundtrack. "The Palace That Was Found" is very hit or miss because of the vocals. I love it though, it's a fairly ordinary song for the most part, then the electric guitar version kicks in near the end and BAM, that sounded damn awesome to me.

I also love Secret Rings' soundtrack because Unawakening Float is possibly my favourite final stage theme, and Worth A Chance is possibly my favourite ending theme. They're both so damn awesome.

I guess I can understand the overall dislike for Secret Rings' soundtrack, I know a lot of people don't like vocals in their Sonic music. I love it though, it really pumps me up.

I liked Heroes music. In fact, it was probably the last 3D Sonic game whose soundtrack didn't dissapoint me. It had the same rock-sound throughout it that the Adventure games did, as opposed to Sonic 06 och Unleashed which both sacraficed a bit of the rock that could have been in them in favor of orchestrated music. I also think Heroes had more memorable and catchy melodies than any Sonic game besides the classic four and the first Adventure.

For me, the top tier would be Sonic 1, 2, 3 and 3D (both), Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Shadow and the two Riders games.

Middle tier is CD (both), Advance 1-3, Rush Adventure, '06, the two Rivals games (too short, not quite on the same production level as the others) and Black Knight (I like it, but it's kind of dull).

Low tier is Secret Rings (goddamn it, shut UP Runblebee. Also, the pirate level has bad drums. Otherwise, I'd bump it up to middle), Rush and Unleashed (these two just don't appeal to me that much, but there are tracks I like in both).

Whatthefuck tier is Chronicles (No comment needed) and Battle (Worst midi guitar ever).

And in response to the whole 'durr hurr yuo doen't liek teh genrez' 'argument' brought up in every thread about Unleashed's music. No. It's not the genres. I don't like the music because I don't think it's very good, especially in comparison to Kobayashi, Kumatani and Ohtani's previous works.

I really liked 06's soundtrack, it was very atmospheric and the fit the levels. And yes, White Acropolis was awesome for the more ravey style, Aquatic Base was ambient and slow techno, Crisis City was just awesome, and more. I think some people just dislike 06's and Unleashed's soundtracks because they aren't rock all the time like Adventure 2's was for half of the characters, and most of the other non-level tracks. 06 went for a serious tone which worked for the game, and Unleashed went cultural, which worked perfectly. I don't think it's as strong as some soundtracks, but it wouldn't be right having pure rock in levels all the time, it was mixed up quite well, and still had awesome stuff like Jungle Joyride Night, both Eggmanlands, Empire City Hub Night, Spagonia Day, etc.

Besides, Adventure 1 wasn't all rock, it had stuff like Lost World, some of the Twinkle Park stuff (the mirror room mainly), Red Mountain which wasn't that rocky, and Casinopolis.

Oh yeah End of the World is win from 06 too.

Yeah, this series always had some great music in the titles. Jun is a great guitarist, but the vocals and lyrics to any Crush 40 song is actually kind of annoying... Or at least.. It got that way after SA2. The lyrics in Endless Possibilities is great and all, but there's still some glam lyric problems going on there.

Glam lyrics. This plagues this franchise's music. Why not a song to just build up the feeling for the game instead of explaining the game's story? You know... Like Queen's music. If anything, listen to "Don't Stop Me Now." Now tell me, which Sonic theme would you like more? That or his theme from Sonic Adventure 1 & 2?

And as another thing, I think that Unleashed was a very fun soundtrack. If anything, I think they should continue with this energetic vibe of the classic Sonic games and make interesting tracks as well as expanding more into the music industry. Any Prince, people? How's about some groovy beats, Ivo? Or is Knuckles singing the blues? All I know is that we need different, yet really energetic music. Even evil Robotnik-y tunes should sound bouncy and lightning powered. A lot like his theme song, you know.

I must admit, while the music in Sonic games these days is nowhere near as catchy as it was pre Sonic Adventure (IMO) and doesn't exactly seem to be getting better, it certainly isn't the worst thing in Sonic games, and we get the odd catchy little gem (Solaris Phase 2, Endless Possibilites, all Sonic Chronicles battle music to name a few), it's a shame it doesn't happen often enough, I like songs which are catchy, not annoying like a lot of the Sonic music these days. =( People give me links to Sonic songs in recent Sonic games which they think are catchy, but I don't think so, I hate them all...

"The Inlet" is good for about 40 seconds, then that really synthy guitar that almost sounds like a theramin starts up and it sucks for basically the rest of the song. The chase is nothing special. Too many instruments not really going anywhere. "His World" is the third worst misuse of a violin I have ever heard. The second worst is the remix of "It Doesn't Matter" from the Black Knight fan art movies, and the worst is the violin mix of 50 cent's "in da club".

In Sonic Unleashed, the violines were used a lot better, but there were still a few general stinkers. Vs. Perfect Dark Gaia has that instrument that I think is supposed to be a tuba with all the bizarre resonance. Seriously? That's what they were going for? It sounds like someone build a Subwoofer's case out if tin foil. The level music in Sonic Unleashed was mostly good, but the cut scene music was mostly throwaway stuff.

Shadow the Hedgehog's soundtrack is laughable. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

But in order to make this post not be 100% negative, I will say that I like Aquatic Time.

What I think really set the classics apart from most other music on the Genesis was that rather than using it to tray and reproduce normal instruments, they used it as a synth with excellent results.

Aquatic Time is pretty darn cool. However I was thinking about this and I've realized that it's been a while since I've heard a "timeless" Sonic song. I love the Unleashed soundtrack but there's nothing that makes me go, "Wow."

I'd love to see another

Hey think they could do something that's more epic than http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYxlqTpZ-24? That would be a shocker!!!

What was kind of interesting about this track is that on the first console version releases ("Outrun 2"/"Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast"), they included the original versions of the Outrun soundtrack as well, but Risky Ride didn't exist then, so instead it got this.

(Yes, that was sung by the DAYTONA! guy)

That's probably more of a Trumpet and Trombone combination of the tune I think you're talking about (the one in the middle of the song?) The pitch is way too high to be anything like a Tuba, where as the Trumpet is easily capable of hitting mid-to-high pitch and the Trombone excels in mid pitches.

My member title is actually a running joke. XD "Sonic is love" is one of these things I say often. Even my friend says it, she gets the Sonic love. =P As for the "Love You Sonic" song I've always hated it. I prefer "#8 Space", "Sonic Stream", "Miracle Blue ~Little Planet~", and the amazing "Dr. 'Gigglymen'" :D

And THIS is "Aquatic Time". It's a song from Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

I kinda agree, I like the track, but The Abandoned Mine is so much cooler with all the percussion and less drowning out of instruments. The intro is also sweet as hell.

However, my favourite track in Sonic 06 is the Crisis City entire one thing. Especially the whirlwind and tornado bits where it gets more rocking as well. End of the World fucking rules too (especially Omega's and Knuckles's bits), and Aquatic Base and White Acropolis are both close thirds for me.

And for violins in Unleashed - Jungle Joyride Night. Stunning track, and feels more like something out of 06 than Unleashed, as it is so much more serious.

Also forgot how epic Crazy Robo was, but never thought much of Supporting Me.

Rush Adventure > Rush imo. I thought the tunes were so much better, ESPECIALLY Coral Cave. Coral Cave music is so much awesome.

"His World" is the third worst misuse of a violin I have ever heard.
As much as I hate the lyrics, I felt the violin made a good introduction; it sort of helped build up the rhythm from a soft start to a stronger core. Either way, I sort of have an affinity for the use of violin in a hip-hop beat. I blame

The second worst is the remix of "It Doesn't Matter" from the Black Knight fan art movies,

The first time I listened to that mix of "It doesn't matter", all the stopping and starting that the violin does during this song, I got the strange impression that whoever playing it kept forgetting where they were in the song.

Try using your ears. Eyes aren't very good for listening.

Perhaps "experienced" would have been a better word, on it's own, the soundtrack is just some corny metal. With the knowledge that it's from a game starring a hedgehog, that's when it becomes funny.
