Does No One Here Want A SatAM/Archie Sonic Game?

So I've been thinking about this for a while, but I was wondering if anyone really wanted a game with content from SatAM and/or Archie Sonic, which includes characters and concepts from them such as the Freedom Fighters, as well as Archie-exclusive Sonic characters.

The replies these two topics got makes me wonder if the idea of such a Sonic game would be universally hated by people on this forum. Then again, maybe it's just mainly about SatAM and/or Archie Sonic content in the main games which many people here would probably dislike, rather than the content being in a spin-off game.

So am I the only one who would want a game based on SatAM and/or Archie Sonic?

I wouldn't hate the idea, but there just too many problems with that concept.

Let's ignore all the technical problems for a second. Penders, reboots, IDW, Sega not giving a damn about Archie, or this being overall bad business idea that will satisfy only small portion of the fanbase.

The fist real problem is that Sonic cast is already too big and barely used, so adding Satam cast is like building swimming pool in are that just good flooded.

Which leads to second problem, Sonic "Universe". It's already a total mess, with many fans wanting opposite things, questionable writing and Sonic Team official statements (Two worlds, Classic/Modern divide) making it even bigger mess. So adding Satam to all of this, even as a innocent spin-off is like filling that swimming pool with gasoline.

And then there is fact that Satam cast was no made for game, adding them could just hurt everything, while game writers would ruing characters so carefully guided by Flynn all those years.

Maybe back in the day when the TV series was still running and the character roster for the main games was still small and not underutilized it could've worked but now I think it's far too late for a SatAM game. We've had nothing from SatAM for years so there's no sense in bringing it up again. Not to mention as @MetalSkulkBane already pointed out such a game would only really be picked up by the minority.

FYI, if you didn't already know there was going to be a game based on the SatAM series but it was eventually cancelled. Here's the demo and some basic info ^^

As for Archie I don't have enough knowledge of the comics to really say anything other than they seem too messy to adapt into anything.

The second continuity isn't really "messy", it's basically the game but less messy and with new elements xD It would be basically easier than to make a new game that would be accurate with all the other, as the work of making the construction coherant is already done.

I think that the second Archie continuity have many interesting thing to create a game : The FF are an interesting cast of character that can have different abilities, and the Egg Boss would give interesting boss that aren't Eggman or its robot (I prefer when Eggman isn't always the "normal boss", and is reserved at least a bit for the final boss). The world is coherant and already done, and is mostly SEGASonic with some stuff added. It would be like continuing the game serie, but with a more organized lore and element coming from three other continuity

And to be honest, I don't think that it would be more hated than everygame on this franchise since years :'D #sarcasm

I don't want a game based on other continuities but I honestly wouldn't mind incorporating characters from other 'verses into other canons, including the Sega canon as unpopular as that viewpoint may be. Like I think it'd be cool if the FFs showed up (repurposed) as NPCs in a game that could use their presence... NGL, I think the game they most deserved to be in was Forces just based on its premise alone. I also think Scratch and Grounder would be great in the games because, uh, I don't really like Orbot or Cubot as much, or any other time when Eggman/Robotnik has had two bumbling sidekicks at some point. Literally can't beat the originals.

It would obviously never happen so it's not something I actively hope for and I also understand other people not wanting it lol. I'm happy enough that people are making Sally/Bunnie hacks for Genesis Sonic games

Personally i want them back, period.

Sally, Bunnie, Antione, Rotor, Dulcy, Uncle Chuck and even Sniveley.

They were here before Shadow, Knuckles, Blaze, Silver and the others sega has piled up.

I just want a cameo or something to show me someone still cares, even if its in IDW and they are in the background somewhere I would feel better.

It sure beats not knowing if they are gone for good, if they are dead then fine I can move on but as long as the characters are in limbo then its very frustrating.

I just care for them as they were there when i was younger, its called a legacy and too bad sega purists dont get that

I'm not really opposed to the idea like I once was, but I wouldn't want them taking precedence over the main sega cast in a game. They also weren't really designed with an obvious gameplay gimmick or two to work with like most sega characters. I've thought of some fun stuff you could do with Bunny's limbs but that's about it.

I'd mainly just like them to exist in the comics again in some form. I think they're better suited for it.

I really don't care about SatAM or Archie Sonic so I don't have any interest in seeing a game based on either. I'm not even sure what the point would be, anyway; any story could've been told just as well or better as a cartoon or comic, I can't think of anything from either that would lend itself to being an interesting gameplay gimmick, and the characters don't really have similar abilities so trying to make more than Sonic playable would likely require either watering it down into something generic or going full genre roulette. And with the series as fractured as it is, it hardly needs another branch of games.

I can't speak for others but I get the effect that a legacy has on an individual. My negative stance against them typically started though back in '93 as what came out of Japan just appealed to me more than what came out of the states (it didn't help that nothing in the cartoons - including Sonic himself -  resembled the games at all). That said though, with Archie's soft reboot at 252 combined with the love for them that others shared allowed me to give them a chance again. I still prefer certain characters over them and feel that they would never fit in more traditional stories with the roles they played, but with Forces and IDW taking the approach that they have I do feel like they could find a place to fit these days. If anything, I think they would be great characters to hand the Resistance and post Forces rebuilding off to when the others typically return to their globetrotting ways.

On the other hand, as I always look at Sonic as a globetrotting adventurer who coincidentally encounters Eggman's next great scheme to take over the world first and foremost, I don't see any room for the SatAM/Archie characters in the games which typically take that approach beyond background Easter eggs. I mean I could maybe see Mina have some potential, but aside from the complications there she is not one of the original SatAM/Archie characters that you are referencing @MadmanRB. Her legacy isn't as strong as the others even if she would better fit the example of a globetrotting adventurer.

At the very least though I don't think I would be against the idea of a game that has SatAM/Archie elements at first, but how it would be handled going from there would strongly affect my perception. But even if I would not be against it, it isn't something I would ask for as I really have no desire for a SatAM/Archie game. As I said above, first and foremost I view Sonic as a globetrotting adventurer and I always and still find the SatAM/Archie approach and the games are very different to how they approach that. In the games Sonic is a free spirit who adventures because he wants to whereas in SatAM/Archie he he enjoys adventuring when it coincides with his duties. This difference can't be blended together in a way that I could find believable without undermining Sonic's character, nor does it even address the whole globetrotting angle. At best I could see a game based on SatAM/Archie being a one off thing where Sonic just happens to end up in the Acorn Kingdom and helps them deal with Eggman's latest scheme and moves on as he always does. That's not to say that I don't see any potential with the SatAm/Archie cast, rather the opposite. I feel there is a lot that can still be explored with them, especially in a post Forces world, but I feel that IDW would be a better place for them than in the games. Honestly, I think anyone who wants them in the games in the current shape the games are in are almost asking for them to become hated and loathed. No, I say let them come back in the IDW comics where they can be explored as the individuals that they are instead of in a game that is going to shaft them in favor of Sonic anyway. I may not care for them as much as the game characters, but they sure don't deserve the treatment they would get in the games.

Actually Bunnie would be cool, like having extending limbs.

As for what gameplay the others would have, if Sally had those write blades that would work.

Antoine has a sword but just as Ray and Tails and Knuckles have different flying abilities I see why he would not be different than Sally.

Rotor being SatAM's Tails could have gadgets to work with

Dulcy is a dragon, flamethrower time!

Or we could give them all guns and bikes that makes any character cool 😛

I remember this prototype being released some time ago. I do not know how legitimate it is, but maybe some light can be shed on this:

I don't think SEGA/SonicTeam should ever worry about making a game based after it... We don't need more separate active Sonic canons running around. SEGA won't ever bother regardless as the Archie Sonic series is dead anyways.

Now on the otherhand I am more then happy to play any fan projects that use them. I think especially the pre-reboot/SonicSatAM would make for fun RPG style games as the stories and characters suit it.

I agree with Sean is that I would prefer to see them to be incoporated to the game canon instead of having a game in another canon. I would love some concept, elements, and character from other canon be used to make "bigger" the lore of the games. They could be some reusable elements that appears sometimes in some games (or even in some comic-made prequel, shorts and stuff like that if SEGA continue making them !).

For instance, I like how the Acorn Kingdom and its set of character could be a "friendly place" for the heroes (while GUN and the United Federation could be kept as more ambiguous some times, as more complex and stuff), that in some lighter game they could have to protect, or do some stuff in it. It wouldn't appear everytime, but it could be a usefull location to use when they need that. Same for Breeze Media and Breezie, the "neutral media/entairtainment megacorporation" could be a useful tropes as it could own all the casino-themed level, and give a more "neutral" party that is sometimes with Eggman, sometimes with the heroes, etc. And I have already says how much I love the Egg Boss : They could really be usefull in the game. They could be bosses that appear sometimes, while being more fleshed out than stuff like the koopaling (and I can imagine a "smaller scale" game (like mobile or portable game), where only an Egg Boss would appear or be the villain). Same for many villain from different, they could give some different ennemies, like ennemies for other character. They could be especially usefull in smaller-scale game, as they could be centered around one character, for instance. And outside the SatAM/Archie canon : I think that Sticks could be a great addition to the game universe (same for Lyrics).

I feel that there are a lot of things in older/other continuities that could be useful for the game lore, without taking away its identity, if it's done right. (meaning : not adding everything at once, and still keeping a sense of what is the core of the game)

Ray and Mighty were already part of the games universe, though. Obscure and irrelevant parts, but parts nonetheless.

The time for that happening was 1993-1995, when those two continuities (and SoA's loose may-or-may-not-be-related canon) were the strongest. Indeed, beyond Spinball there were a couple of attempts at exactly that that fell by the wayside due to Sega losing their fucking minds around 1994.

After Sega told everyone who followed Archie that they can get fucked is a bit too late to really hope for anything anymore.

I liked the idea enough to fool around with foe 8-bit character animations awhile back.  I'd love to see a game based on SatAM or the Archie books myself. Of course getting an official game is about as likely as spotting a bat fly out of Hell, and the best chance of getting something like that is through fan games. I think the idea is interesting because I don't believe you can approach it like any other Sonic game. If you made a typical sonic game, classic physics and all, featuring those characters you'd be missing the point of doing a game with the SatAM setting.

(Yes that's an Underground swatbot. It's here as an Easter egg. Like the lone classic battonton in Megaman X)

Choose between Sally, Sonic, or Bunnie. Sally's immensely acrobatic; able to bounce off the heads of most enemies but, outside of stunning them, doesn't have much offense. It's all mobility. Haven't thought out the others all that much but Bunnie's obviously the powerhouse that can actually dispatch bots, and Sonic's playstyle would lie somewhere in between the two.

I like the idea of adapting specific episodes into there own missions or levels.

Not sure I agree entirely with the Freedom Fighters not fitting with Classic Sonic gameplay given that @E-122-Psi did a near perfect adaptation of these characters to Sonic 1 and they still feel about right for the kind of physics gameplay that may lend itself well to stealth gameplay. Stealth Gameplay has been played around with Sonic starting back as far as Sonic 3 in Launch Base Zone but there's room to make more use of surveillance and security traps to utilize for an FF heavy Sonic game and Sonic being a good character to pick for quick missions that has someone who can slide in easy and make a quick getaway.

If Freedom Planet can add combat and ladder climbing and Rayman kind of double jump hover mechanics then it goes to show that the Sonic formula is still incredibly flexible and needs to be played with more.

A stealth Sonic game based on bringing these characters in would help push the series out of its comfort zone and be only a good thing I feel. The series needs to root itself back into what works while also making note to bring itself into new territory.

I'm a huge advocate for a game with these characters and ideas and it was the one thing that kept me paying attention to Sonic Forces for as long as it did but even that game's Eggman makes Robotnik out to be a fun guy because he at least takes pleasure and has fun while doing the despicable and is arguably more Eggman than the Eggman I saw in Forces. I would have even preferred Sonic 06 Eggman to Forces Eggman. Also, the species selection wasn't big enough, and no Sega, I don't care that there were bonuses to picking types of animals, I just wanted to make Bunnie Rabbot or Sally to play as but you didn't give me a lot of options. I guess the fanbase, as per usual, has to make up for what you weren't able to do. Oh well. You tried?

There was a topic about this before but I'll reiterate the desire to see a game based on the ideas presented in Sonic X Season 3. No Hog's Sky but with stuff to do in it from the get-go.

It’s not a bad idea in concept or theory, and I’d be down with it being modeled more along the lines of what Ian Flynn had in Archie (One world, multiple characters divided into different factions, great use of game plot devices and lore).

Compared to say, League of Legends or Smash Bros., the cast of major characters from the whole series isn’t that big, although you’d still have a lot of work to do with even a fraction of that in a playable format.

Giving each character unique abilities isn’t all that hard, if anything it would be how they’d interact with the level design that would be the tricky part. I think mobility is important in a Sonic game, and not everyone is all thay mobile—characters like Bunnie can fly, shoot lasers, erect a shield, and use super strength, and you could make Sally agile enough to get by even if she can’t run as fast as Sonic (then again, a lot of the game cast technically aren’t supposed to be as fast, but they move fast enough anyway that it doesn’t matter), but characters like Antoine would pose a challenge to differentiate into something unique unless you’re willing to take a few liberties to make him viable...then again, Post-Reboot did sort of just that, so that’s not off the table.

Aside from the possibility of it ever happening, which is pretty slim after what Sega did with Archie, it’d be a challenge to work out. But it’s an interesting idea to think about.

We still dont know if the SatAM characters are owned by archie though, just because the comics before appeared the series did does not mean that archie has full rights to them.

After all why did the Dic cartoon ever happen or get a digital distribution?

Its still on services like Amazon and google play and if Archie has the keys surely it would be pulling them off?

Even Ian Flynn made a comment about it back in 2010:
"Every level of production is run past Sega. Robert Leffler and Dyna Lopez work in Sega Licensing and the script has to get approved, the pencils have to get approved, the inking, then the lettering, then the coloring. Everything has to go through them first."

-Ian Flynn, head writer for Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series

"Ultimately SEGA owns everything in the book. If it's associated with Sonic in the book, it is by extension SEGA's. From my understanding, that is why BioWare could so freely emulate the Dark Legion for the Marauders [in Sonic Chronicles]. I know there was some confusion elsewhere concerning rights to SatAM. As it was explained, SEGA owns the intellectual property—the characters and such—but DiC retains the rights to the animation. So you wouldn’t see SEGA reselling SatAM boxsets willy-nilly. Conversely, DiC wouldn’t be able to just up and make a new Sonic cartoon."

-Ian Flynn

And considering Dic doesnt really exist anymore (its now a part of DHX) well...

This is my logic in why not bring the SatAM characters into IDW, I mean IDW has resurrected ROM space knight for petes sake a franchise that was also tied up in legal mubo jumbo.
