Isn't it ironic that Classic Sonic now has more playable characters than Modern Sonic?

I don't have time to listen to all of that, but whatever might have been going through Sega's heads, this site labeled the article an April Fool's joke, did not cite any sources in it, and Big didn't actually get retired.  At least not for long.  If Sega either hated him or thought fans hated him, then I don't see why he'd be one of the characters they revealed in an upcoming game; let alone talk him up on social media.

Of course, even if Iizuka did say something, you might as well take every opinion he expresses with a grain of salt, since he seems to get ideas out of thin air and ditch them just as fast.

That was years ago.

Anyway them claiming Big was "retired" was ultimately an empty directive made to make people feel better about some of the series more notorious elements, much like the Barrel of Doom and 06. This was evident in not only him still being in the Archie comics(although that did use a lot of other "retired" characters anyway), but in how Big was a minor character who didn't show up that often to begin with.
