How is it, that Sonic is still popular?

It annoys me to no end how whenever any Sonic game, cartoon, or even the movie is announced, the first paragraph in a Kotaku, Polygon, Destructoid, IGN, article ALWAYS starts with the phrase: 'Sonic has had a rough transition to 3D' or 'Sonic USED to be a gaming giant until the 2000's' or 'Sonic has seen his share of failures' it's so biased.

Why do you believe this statement is a biased one?

Anime designs, concepts, and slick sharp attitudes for all the characters that carry power of being fanservice.

Because right out the gate the author's are constantly reminding readers of bad games in the history of the character, and saying the franchise has jumped the shark, whilst completely overlooking all the good games the franchise has made since then. It's like they are dooming Sonic to fail from the start of the article.

When Crash N-Sane Trilogy was announced I never heard anyone from the gaming community bring up stuff like Crash Bash, Crash of the Titans or Crash: Mind Over Mutant. They all seemed genuinely excited for the game, but when it comes to Sonic, the infamous kiss is ALWAYS referenced, (the game is 13 years old) like they won't let Sega live down that mistake no matter how many Generations, Rush, Colors, All Stars Racing, or Mania they give us.

Generations, Rush and Colours are also approaching 10 years old. Shit, Rush is already there. N. Sane Trilogy probably didn’t get that as much because it was very explicitly a remaster of the games people actually liked.

Overdone as it is, pointing out Sonic’s had a rocky 3D past isn’t “bias”, it’s just stating the obvious. In fact it’s not even the past, because as good as Generations was it was then followed by two disasters anyway.

Accurate or not, you can't deny that it's annoying. Plus it opens the way for worse statements like "Sonic doesn't work in 3d," or "Sonic was never good."

Sonic is still popular because people keep buying his games and people never stopped talking about him. Word of mouth and constant exposure can be enough to keep a franchise going even in the worst of times. Plus, there really was something there back in the Genesis and (to a lesser extent) Dreamcast days that is worth remembering and cherishing, and the hopes for more titles that capture those feelings are hard to extinguish.

Sonic was so explosively popular among gamers in the early 90's that some of that popularity still lingers among those who grew up at that time. That's why every video game store still sells Sonic t-shirts and other merchandize despite the fact that the actual Sonic GAMES as of late have a hard time Selling (and also why so much merchandize is based on Classic Sonic as opposed to modern Sonic). Basically, people pf a certain generation still love the IDEA of Sonic because of what he once was, even if they have since long stopped giving a hoot about his new games. It's the same deal as with certain other characters like for instance Pac-man. Everyone wants a cool Pac-man cap or mug, but nobody cares about his new games.
