Or to be extra geeky, how about making "CD" stand for something? "Chronological Dimensions"... for something time related.

Classic Era - all 16-bit titles, Ken Balough for Needlemouse called them "Legacy" games.

Adventure Era - both Adventure games, the major Sonic games on Dreamcast, distinctly Sega in style and fun.

Multiplatform, the Dark Ages - Sega goes publisher, Heroes slips in quality, Shadow's laughed at, '06 fails to be SA3.

Current Era - too early to name. Storybooks, Unleashed, and Needlemouse goes here.

Everything else is in Limbo, the void where Tails Doll comes from. Handhelds are either Game Gear or Dimps.

I always considered Sonic Adventure to be the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 we'd been waiting for, and if not Sonic Adventure it would've been Sonic X-Treme. I also always thought that Sonic Adventure 2 shouldn't have been in the Adventure series since it never featured any "adventure" elements and it was just an obvious marketing gimmick to me.

I think if given the chance, I'd have done it very close to how Doctor Eggman has it in the first post, with the exception of leaving 'Shadow the Hedgehog' as it is. To me, it's about as much a 'floater' as Sonic CD is. Plus it being Shadow's first/only game it would suit the '... the Hedgehog' naming convention.
