CHAPTER 25: CALLING THE SHOTS

Spoiler

“All I’ve been taught so far is how this world works!” Sayaka pants, rushing forward down a hallway, following Sonic to… wherever he wants her to go. Not that she knows for sure. “I still don’t know a single thing about leading a team! I’m a team PLAYER!”

“You’re the one who said yes to the gig. You gotta have SOME leader experience!” Tails cries out, catching up to the two while twirling his tails behind him for momentum.

“That was Mami’s job! All I did was fight and complain that Homura’s guns got in the way…!” Sayaka grimaces.

“Tails will give you the rundown on what’s going on once we get to the briefing hall. Sonic and I will fill in any blanks and make tweaks, but try to see if you can give any input on how we attack.” Trace replies, helmet on as he runs with the trio.

“That’s easier said than done…!” Sayaka gulps.

Sonic groans, pinching his forehead mid-run. “Guys! Guys! We’re confusing her more! Just follow my lead. You’ll pick up on the leader thing soon, I know it. She’s seen Mami draw out a plan, she’ll see me draw out a plan. So when the time comes… you get the gist.”

Sayaka sighs, wondering if her acceptance of the Disciples position really was just a spur of the moment, over-confident agreement. Just like her wish… Right?

No, it can’t be.

She can’t let that happen again.

Or did she already do so?

“Agggh…!” Sayaka growls under her own breath, frustrated by these conflicting back and forth thoughts fighting for dominance in her brain.

The train of thought meets its abrupt stop as the four approach a steel double door. Sonic presses his hands against both doors and pushes, swinging them open to reveal the Briefing Room to Sayaka.

The Briefing Room consists of a massive large panelled conference hall, almost like an auditorium with a single raised strip dividing the room in half for the higher ups to cross the sea of waiting and murmuring Disciples.

Sure enough, waiting they are as Sayaka crosses the walkway. The crowd of faces include dozens of Clone Troopers, and more recognizable and unrecognizable heroes like. Some she could see off the top of her head is some of her fellow training partners, like Star-Lord, Polka Dot Man, the Green Lantern and Anakin Skywalker. Along with more sprinklings of heroes, like Jibanyan the Yo-Kai, Rayman, Pit the angel and… is that a gathering of yellow Minions?

The more she looks out into the sea of people, the higher the pressure rises. She instead chooses to suck it and stare forward into the hologram white board awaiting them at the end of the stage.

“Settle down, team!” Sonic calls out, hands held high. “Settle down!”

The murmuring continues uninterrupted.

“DISCIPLES! Attention!” Sonic blurts out, the murmuring fading into silence. “Thank you.” Sonic snaps his fingers, looking up into the sky. “Teletraan, bring up the signal.”

The hologram flickers to showcase a sea of multiverses, before zooming in closer and closer to home in on one multiverse. Then a universe. Then a planet, region, city. The video footage of the city shows the land up in flames, purple warships closing in from the sky.

“THE SIGNAL ORIGINIATES IN MULTIVERSE #29DD1.” Teletraan announces. “UNIVERSE SECTOR PM62901: CASTELIA CITY, UNOVA.”

“Ah… I see.” Sonic grumbles before spinning his heel back to face the crowd. “The Metarex are attacking our post in this Castelia City variant. Most likely to retrieve our beacon.”

Tails steps ahead, looking over to Sayaka, tailoring his next sentence for her. “As most of you know, we place these beacons to not only signal that their universe is under our protection, but to act as range extenders, increasing our signals to find the right multiverse to find a Golden Weapon. This is the key to the war effort.”

“We placed the beacon on our last visit to this Pokemon world riiiight here.” Tails points at a tall building with a surfboard as its logo, sitting atop the roof. “Underneath the Game Freak building.”

“So we need to depart as soon as possible with a plan to defend the beacon before it is found, and breached.” Sonic rubs his hands, looking over the city.

“Any first inputs, Ms. Sayaka?” Trace asks with his arms folded, putting all attention back on the girl.

“M-Me? Now?” Sayaka gulps, pointing at herself.

“Yes. Now.” Trace nods. “Let’s see what you got.”

Sayaka glances around, looking at the others before scratching her head, looking over at the chalkboard. “Okay… ummm…”

Three things stand out to her. The warships, the beacon’s location, and the occupation of ground soldiers on the city below.

“Well… if the mission involves protecting the beacon, we’re going to need to reach it first. Which is going to be hard with ground forces. If we can… take them out from above, it can provide a clearing for a retrieval team to make it to the building.” Sayaka comments. “But those flying ships are in the way. We need somebody to tear that down.”

Sayaka looks over to Trace, remembering a crucial assistant for that kind of operation. “Hey, uh. Trace. I need you to assemble Lock-On to lead an air strike force on the warship.”

“Two, actually. One to take out the ships, and the other to attack the forces below.” Sonic states. “I’m appointing Lock-On, Anakin Skywalker, Fox McCloud, and Carol Danvers for the first wave.”

“I-I’ll do my best… sir!” Lock-On salutes amongst the crowd.

“Just tell me when to shoot.” Anakin folds his arms with a chuckle.

“I’m on the job!” Fox, the anthropomorphic pilot states, adjusting the scouter on his eye.

“Competition on who gets the final blow?” The blonde human, Carol, aka Captain Marvel asks with a smirk.

“Oh, I won’t let you get the win this time!” Anakin nudges her, egging her onto the challenge.

Sonic holds up a second finger. “Second wave! I’m assigning the Aerialbots: Silverbolt, Air Raid, Fireflight, Skydive and Slingshot for crowd control after wave one does their job. You’ll create a clearing from above to clear out the invaders.”

Silverbolt, the leader holds his fist out. The other Aerialbots following suit behind him. “And if you need further ground patrol, know that Superion will be on standby!”

Sonic grins with an acknowledging hum. “Alright, Sayaka. Step two.”

Sayaka nods, a smile etching on her face as things start to piece together. “Okay… Okay! Right! So, after the air forces are gone, we need to strike quickly to reach the base. You said it’s underground, right?” Sayaka asks.

“Yup.” Tails says. “However, look at this…” Tails zooms in on a scene near the building. “The Metarex have the same idea. They’re burrowing under the city to find it.”

A giant drill-like machine is seen revving up, surrounded by Battle Droids.

“That’s the Underminer’s drill.” Trace states. “It won’t be too long before they find that beacon.”

“The Underminer? That some sort of mole themed supervillain?” Sayaka asks, looking over to the crowd… which are nodding in unison. “Huh. Shit, then.”

“Which means we gotta be quick. Guess that’s what Sonic and I will take care of. We’re fast, we’ll lead the charge. Who else can catch up?”

A flaming hand rises from the crowd. “I volunteer!”

“You’re name… Sir?” Sayaka squints, looking over the crowd to see a spirit made of fire and stone.

“The name’s Spitfire, I’m a SuperCharger. One of the fastest Skylanders on the field! Especially under the hood of my car, the Hot Streak!” Spitfire introduces himself, cockily.

“Car… Car…” Sayaka says, tapping her foot, an idea formulating. “What would Mami do… She’d find a job for everyone…”

Sonic taps Tails on the shoulder, smirking. “Told you she’ll get the hang of it.”

“She’s enthusiastic, I’ll give her that… whether she realizes it or not. That’ll get her places.” Tails agrees.

“Then you can use that car to carry some heavy hitters that aren’t as fast!” Sayaka replies, snapping her fingers. “We’re gonna need some big guys to break into the Underminer’s machine!”

“O-Or… someone that can burn holes into it in seconds…” A timid hand raises. Polka Dot Man.

Sayaka blinks, thinking back to the time she saw how surprisingly strong those polka dots are in training. “Then Spitfire, you’re Polka Dot Man’s escort!”

“Hope you can keep up!” Spitfire looks over to the timid Disciple.

“…B-But you’ll be driving me. I’ll catch up no matter what.” Polka Dot Man replies, not getting a lick of Spitfire’s banter.

“…” Spitfire remains quiet.

“We hijack the machine, drill to the beacon. Grab it, and relocate it before the Metarex could find us.” Sayaka concludes. “Is… that a good plan?”

She smiles sheepishly back at Sonic, Tails and Trace. Tails gives a thumbs up. “It’s a start.”

“Tails…!” Sonic slaps his thumb down. “I’m SURE it’s a good plan!”

Tails shakes his hand, wincing from the slap. “But. You’re missing one thing.”

Sayaka clicks her tongue. “What?”

“You’re not going into battle dressed as that, lady. Not this time.” Tails gestures to Sayaka’s getup: The caped school uniform. “Follow me before we depart, I got something for you.”

“As for everyone else!” Sonic declares, fist raised to show his watch. “Teletraan will contact the rest of you for support roles, follow the instructions on your DEUS and report to your designated vehicles! We depart in 30 minutes! Let’s rise, team! For the Writers!”

“FOR THE WRITERS!” The crowd shouts back, concluding the meeting.

CHAPTER 26: SUIT UP

Spoiler

MUSIC: LAYER CAKE – PERSONA 5

Tails and Sonic escort Sayaka down a series of hallways before landing on a wide steel door. This one door looks much more rugged and scratched than the other more sleeker entryways. It is lined with rivets and dents, a testament to both its durability, and the potential dangers that lurk behind it.

“So this place is…?” Sayaka watches Tails walks to the door and enters a code on the door’s keypad. He then turns to Sayaka with a toothy grin.

“…Heaven.” He grins as the doors slide open to reveal a wide, sprawling workshop. “Come on, come on! We won’t bite!”

Tails marches onwards as he continues his sentence. “Much.”

Sonic gestures to Sayaka with a wink, as if telling her “after you”.

Sayaka nods and walks forward down the middle walkway, looking attentively at her new surroundings. The workshop is a series of walkways, on each side is large worktables for individual Disciples gifted with technological know-how.

The walls and floor are a lot less sleek and clean than anything else on the Helicarrier, with only the sleek wall-integrated lights and the occasionally placed Teletraan-1 stations reminding her of where she really is.

She could see from the parallel walkways Astromech droids, happily beeping and booping down the trail with trays latched onto their chassis, each carrying a variety of tools to the builder who requested them. From screwdrivers, shards of Vibranium, to even entire robotic limbs.

“This floor is where we do all the construction. There’s a floor above us for conference, to discuss ideas. And then the third floor contains all our tools and materials. But most of the time, we just make whatever the heck comes to our heads.” Tails comments as he passes by a specific booth and peers into it.

Looking down, Tails could see a bushy tail rummaging through a box before popping out.

“Ah, finally! Flux Capacitor! Was about to give that droid hell!” What came out is a talking raccoon.

“S’up, Rocket?” Tails salutes. “What’s the build?”

Rocket snickers as he slams the Flux Capacitor on the ground, reaching to another end of his desk to reveal a gunmetal grey gun. “Flux Blaster, one hit from this bad boy would cause those Metarex bastards to stop seeing us, and instead, see the past! A couple days into the past, they’ll be SO frickin’ confused!”

Rocket laughs at the prospect of his own idea, a mix between a prideful howl and a cackle. When he finishes he wipes his eye before looking over to Sayaka. “Hey, new girl.”

“…Hey.” Sayaka states, with a wave.

“You better be grateful for what I make here.” Rocket says. “What we do saves everyone’s ass, especially what I make. So you better use it!”

“I’ll… keep that in mind!” Sayaka chuckles, bashfully.

“Good. Now move it, I got work to do!” Rocket then dives back into his box.

“…He’s one of my favorites here.” Tails whispers. “Reminds me of me. Okay, keep goin’, chop chop!”

“It’s the only place he gets to boss me around, so… humor him.” Sonic whispers to Sayaka as they walk forward. Sayaka only slowly nods in compliance.

“By the way though…” Sayaka asks, tilting her head up at the upper floor. “If Sonic and I can create anything we want with our new powers, why do we need this big lab?”

“You underminin’ me?” Tails blows his lips together. “Pffft, just cause you guys can make anything, don’t mean you CAN make anything. You don’t got the imagination to make intricate, original, BEAUTIFUL designs. You can make swords, sure. But I don’t think you’d ever get the idea for that time gun ‘til Rocket showed you. And even then, you don’t know the parts to make ‘em work. It’ll probably blow up in your damn faces and you’ll probably see twenty years into the future of the guy beside you.”

“I should know…” Sonic winces. “Not with weapons, but with food. DON’T make food with Golden Power. It’s not worth it. It’s SO hard to recreate taste.”

“Duly… noted.” Sayaka nods. “Okay, so where’s your station, Tails?”

BANG! BANG!

Tails knocks on the metal of a desk, leaning on it. “Right ‘ere!”

“Awesome! Good timing!” Sayaka rubs her hands together. “So, what’s my new suit?”

WHAM!

Pulled out from a box and slammed on the table is a navy blue helmet. The visor is shaped like an eight, a star-like crown pattern embedded atop it, and a retractable faceplate below it.

“This is the centerpiece of the new suit. This is all I can really finalize right now, kinda built it off a scrapped idea for a Phase 3 Clone Trooper… Added some ZX Ninja flare and a bit o’ T.O.M template for the visor, and slapped a very handy AI HUD to guide you into battle! Whattaya think?” Tails explains, clearly ecstatic about the design.

Sayaka looks at the helmet, mouth agape as she tries to register what Tails just said to her.

Key word being “try.”

“…In English, please?”

Sonic steps in. “It’s a cool helmet, with an AI guide to help you.”

“Ah.”

“I call it the V.E.R.A! Virtual Expository and Reticle Assistant. Should help identify threats, and help you find your targets easily.” Tails grins. “Finalizing the V.E.R.A. though was as far as I can get for anything schmancy. And you decided to say no to my loving recreation to your old costume. Thanks for that, by the way… I had to improvise on short notice.”

Sayaka winces, feeling slightly bad of denying the old outfit. But her gut continues to tell her that putting it on is just too painful of a memory, as she already feels unease down there.

“So, you get THIS.”

WHUMP!

Laid out on the table is a glorified sweater and sweatpants. Granted, that is a bit of an oversimplification…

The sweater and pants are lined with neon lights, ending with small circular pockets storing energy. It is slightly padded for defense, but still looks light enough for nimble movement.

“With this and the helmet, it’s designed with anonymity in mind, as far away from what you used to wear… but also light enough where you aren’t wearing like a bulky suit of armor. The energy pockets interface with V.E.R.A. to act as backup power if the helmet’s outta juice.” Tails explains.

Sayaka grabs the sweater and analyzes it. She feels up the texture, pinching her finger against the sleeve. Then she looks down on the helmet, her face becoming slowly more determined. “Well, we got a mission to get to. So, let’s give it a whirl.”

“Washroom’s on your left, buddy.” Sonic states.
