Sonic Frontiers - Teaser Trailer

Message added by Dreadknux,

Recent posts about the 'Sonic Frontiers' trademark information has been broken out into its own thread. This thread was originally about the game's announcement trailer way back in May, so it's a bit out of date to be posting significant game updates here.

Please remember to create a NEW forum topic if fresh news about a game has surfaced. This makes it a lot easier for users to find and discuss the latest news on SSMB. The side-chat about 'another solo Sonic game' may also be broken out into its own separate thread, to contain and avoid repeat discussions about it.

I wouldn’t call Forces “slapstick”. The word I’d use is “slapdash”.

I'll do ya one better: slapspin

Man, something tells me Sega and Sonic Team weren't really trying with Sonic Forces as they said they would be.

Heck, there was not even anyone experienced enough to try developing the game anyway, with the lack of level designers and stuff. I am also convinced it was just released simply to release something and that they did not have the funds or ideas or designers or whatever at the time, because it was an abomination of all kinds of minimal efforts. Honestly, Forces could be my most disliked Sonic game ever to have come to this planet, simply because it makes me feel nothing at all. It's literally just there, I remember feeling excited about the game and buying it for full price on day one just for it to end after literally 1.5 hours or something. At least completing the game %100 percent made me feel something.

You know there is legitimate fun to be had with titles like black knight (god-tier story), 06 (for all the wrong reasons), and even with people saying Lost World is a mess I think it tries something new, and it is fine and good, albeit the controls feel janky most of the time. With forces, you literally press like 2 buttons for an hour and that's it, no original levels, no engaging story, no nothing man. And the fact that they took like 4 years to release that game adds salt to the injury, at least we got like 2-3 games per year and something amongst them was sure to be of some quality.

And this marks the end of my out-of-context forces rant, honestly, I feel optimistic about "Rangers" BUT forces traumatized me so hard for taking 4 years of my life and giving me 2 hours of absolutely nothing that I end up thinking about the next game being like it.

Having played every major Sonic game except Secret Rings and Rise Of Lyric, I don't think I've ever really hated one of them. Each one has it's moments and I usually manage to have fun regardless of janky gameplay or weak stories. Forces was, at worst, just kinda depressing that we weren't getting two great Sonic games that year, but I still had fun with it when I eventually picked it up. I want Infinite to return so he can be done right. Maybe it's just because the early 2010s were when I started actively following Sonic games, but I never felt betrayed by Forces or expected it to be representative of the series' future.

Fair point, also having played pretty much all of the games, have none that I hate, for Forces I can't use the word hate, it's just the lack of soul in that game mirroring back onto me, making me feel an absolute emptiness. Like, there is not even a game to play in Forces, it is a game that is fine and meh at worst for outsiders, but for fans who waited for 4 years to play something, it does not serve any playground. The game legit takes less than 2 hours to beat, and maybe 5 more for 100% (which makes it actually fun because occasionally it gets a challenge to complete certain quests or collect some items). And what little playtime it has, it consists of the same 3 levels and long, empty corridors with no freedom whatsoever except for Null Space and Mortar Canyon. It does not also help that the cutscenes look like they were made in SFM.

I'm guessing Forces was the result of Sega restructurings after Boom flopped.

It's really difficult to find what exactly Forces is the result of, with the small amount of information we have.

Something like that can have a lot of causes, and often come from multiple causes at the same time. It could have been needed quick cash to either rentabilize the HE2 or future project, the need of making the game fast because of a "post-Sonic Boom panic", the team not being inspired by/adapted to that project, either failure in one of several of the team that dragged the project behind, bad management:tm:, Nakamura's dog eating his homework, unability to really sell the project to the decision-maker that made it have not enough budget, something that made the release date unmovable (either some technicality, a or several managers that don't want to push the date, or other circumstances), etc, etc.

We can speculate on some, find some info that would go in some direction... But all in one, it's often kinda complicated.

( Or maybe there is just a malediction that doom every SatAM-inspired/ressembling stuff )

There are only some things I could believe  to be true, from my own point of view. Either the game was released in a rushed state (i.e. the actual time making the game was significantly small relative to its whole development), there was a brain drain in needed talent, which isn't uncommon in this industry, or the project was mismanaged at several points of development for reasons beyond our knowledge. These at least, seem to be the major causes in my mind.

i am realizing, we can be almost certain that there will be many incredible vistas and very inspiring environments!!   the early tester didn't mention this, and i haven't read this recent leak, but,  amazing views and creative environments, likely enhanced by the open world potentiation, will be one of the major highlights of this game!!

I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around this considering it spent 4 years in development from what we know. If we take off 1 year for making the engine (assuming Sonic Team are incapable of making a game and an engine simultaneously), thats 3. That's more than what Sonic 06 got, if we assume that game began development after Sonic Heroes released in 2004.

It just begs the question of what where they doing because the final product does not reflect that time at all.

I'd love an open world casino zone or a chance to explore Eggman bases more freely.
