Sonic Frontiers - Teaser Trailer

Message added by Dreadknux,

Recent posts about the 'Sonic Frontiers' trademark information has been broken out into its own thread. This thread was originally about the game's announcement trailer way back in May, so it's a bit out of date to be posting significant game updates here.

Please remember to create a NEW forum topic if fresh news about a game has surfaced. This makes it a lot easier for users to find and discuss the latest news on SSMB. The side-chat about 'another solo Sonic game' may also be broken out into its own separate thread, to contain and avoid repeat discussions about it.

Even BotW doesn't have just one environment. A big chunk of the game is "plain and forests with some ruins", but you get also a desert, a snowy place, several mountains, a volanic area where heat kills you, some small cities, some swamps, a ravine with a huge temple, a jungle, some islands, etc.

And TBH, in a way I think that Rangers might be similar about that, in that I don't think it'll have really original wacky environnement à la Colors (except maybe in the Cyberspace), but more "grounded" ones like those or those of a Unleashed/2006/etc

Interesting. Looks like I should have dug more into it. I can see more modern cities, or at least one, and more modern artificial areas that aren't natural like forests as well as more themed areas than what Breath of the Wild may have had in Sonic Colors.

Hope so, at least. It would be pretty "modern Sonic Team" to just plop in one environment (big forest) and be done with it... but I'd like to think they'll do a bit more than that. They have too, right? Can't take six years and then do nothing with it... right?

We don't know for sure, unfortunately; at least not yet.

Say, on the topic of level themes, what new level themes would you all like to see if there are any in Sonic Rangers? A magic show themed area? An art themed area, a fully cloud themed area where you run on clouds?

Definitely a big city like Station Square or Skyscraper Scamper. Japanese themed, if you please... Sonic's never been to Tokyo, after all.

The guy responsible for the video is writer for Tails Channel and he claims that the source of the information is someone who provided legitimate information to him multiple times. He says that he trusts his source with 99% confidence.

Obviously, no one should trust any leak completely, however this particular information drop has more legitimacy than just random 4chan post

Well, I just want the levels to be adapted to the theme of the game. If the game needs a certain type of level, I'd rather not have them going too much trying to put everything "needed for a Sonic" for the game. That was one of the quality of Colors for instance (all levels are adapted to what the game is), and an issue that I had in Sonic Forces where some environneemnt where kinda "forced" (no pun intended), like the Casino Forest or GHZ (even if the concept art made it more fitting).

Not at all ? Modern Sonic Team always had several environment, and never really got to doing just one environment. They have their issues (a lot of them), but they don't really done anything that way, so there is really no ground to say that they would do that. If anything, they tend to be too much "traditionnal" while it would be a big break about that.

So TBH, if it's still not 100% impossible that would happens, we don't have really too much rational ground to infer that from the previous game and from their well-known, documented issue.

So I'm just watching this supposed leak and am only two minutes in so far but there's a red flag right away. Apparently, the leaker said that the game is not set in stone for a 2022 release date. Why would the leaker have that information at all? They're just play testing or demoing the game. SEGA has teased the game with a 2022 release. That's all that they will say about the release date until either an actual date is given or it's officially delayed. Game publishers and developers aren't in the habit of announcing a release date/period and then "oh but it might change". That's not good business. So the fact that the supposed leaker is even commenting on that it's suspicious to me. All that they should be saying is that they don't know or that it's 2022.

Yeah, that's a kinda big red flag for me too, as is that he says several time that he have "say" some stuff to the ST about previous game. First because it's not really the playtester role, and secondly because it's basically giving away who they are to SEGA.

I have a theory that the island could be a Phantom Ruby illusion. I don't know how my ghost waifu fits into things, but Infinite's music playing in a boss fight and Sonic apparently saying the island seemed off, as well as Sega not allowing Infinite to be in the IDW comics, seems to imply something going on.

According to one of the leaks that claimed that, Infinite’s theme ask likely just used as a placeholder. There’s also the fact that Ian Flynn stated that characters that are dead in the main series are off-limits in the comics, and that’s why Black Doom and Mephilis were replaced in the Shadow Fall arc of Sonic Universe.

It very well could be a placeholder, but the Infinite music invokes a specific tone and theme, and they have a reservoir of generic boss music, so why use the only one tied to a specific character? And the dead characters are an "all squares are rectangles, not all rectangles are squares" situation. All dead characters are off limits but not all off limit characters are dead. Sega explicitly stated those two couldn't be used because they're dead, meanwhile Infinite's absence has been left a total mystery.

If this person is a play tester with QA, fair enough they might know a little bit more about the development process. I'm not really sure. But it's just superfluous information. Feels like it's there just so that they can play the typical "subject to change" cars that you see all the time in fake leaks. I don't have any reason to trust this leak. It's just... I think I've already given it all the time it deserves.

Now something is fishy. Like you said, why would the leaker have that information from Sega? Something does not seem right. You made some good points by the way, Blue Blood. I am starting to think again that Sonic 2022 will come out that year, and will not be delayed. The person in the video did say that they couldn't do it this year in the state the game was in, but I don't see enough reason to believe that the game will be delayed past 2022, even with Covid.

I doubt Sega will delay it when releasing it shortly after the movie will be best for the brand and sales.

Of course. Delaying it for any reason would hurt Sega more than it would do them good, I imagine; especially with the brand and sales thing as you said.

It's always supposed testers knowing one too many things than they should that throws things off.

Was this guy even a tester? Unless I missed something, they sound more like a Sega employee that got a chance to try it out.

I sincerely doubt it's going to be delayed past 2022. Maybe if problems arise, but I don't think they would have made a decision like that this far out. The rest of this are just things cobbled together from other sources. There's nothing new jumping out at me here. I guess you could say it's because they played the same demo, but I dunno? It would have been easy for me to write this up if I wanted to and the TailsChannel has been taken for a ride in the past.

I don't really think there's a problem with discussing it since nothing else is going on. Just reminding everyone how easy it is make these things up.

Given that the only major issues left seem to be remaining jank, at worst case scenario I'd expect a late 2022 release with a day one patch.

The only leak I trust is the original one that got the title of the game right and talked about the spin cycle gimmick that was later shown in the official reveal trailer, because it was proven right.

This thing of the game taking place on an island made of forests and ruins was already said in an older leak so they're probably piggybacking.

I think that the game will surprise us all and that 99% of those leaks are fake.

The Sonic Frontiers one might have some truth in it but as said by others it might just be one of the several titles referenced in the poll, along with Rangers. I'm pretty confident that the final name will be Rangers, unless they decided to change it last minute because of the leak.

I know that the first leak is most likely to be at least partially correct, and even Izuka mentioned that the game will be something different altogether, saying wanting to try an open world game, and that he wants this next game to be what adventure was to the classics or something along those lines BUT

Wouldn't it be funny if we just get a supbar minimal effort boost game with a slapstick story like forces after all these years

Man, something tells me Sega and Sonic Team weren't really trying with Sonic Forces as they said they would be.

I'm guessing Forces was the result of Sega restructurings after Boom flopped.

I wouldn’t call Forces “slapstick”. The word I’d use is “slapdash”.
