I can believe the anime influence part of the rumor. In fact, I think it's really logical.

Sega has long been unhappy with Sonic's lack of appeal in the east, and the anime style is more popular in the west now than ever. They're trying to push him as a VTuber, which are also hugely popular. The game is supposedly a BotW clone, and one of the biggest BotW clones going right now is Genshin Impact.

All of those things tell me that they'd be interested in giving the franchise more of a Japanese anime style. And that they might even reinvent Sonic a bit as a reintroduction to audiences (read: soft reboot).

And I half-joked about it in a status update, but I could even seen them making Frontiers a gacha game like Genshin.

I wonder what this game's artstyle will look like visually. If the teaser trailer was anything to go off then I bet it will look similar to Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis

but at the same time maybe they will stylize the visuals a bit and we'll get something closer to Mario & Sonic at Tokyo 2020

The video is not official Tails Channel video, so calling it "Tails Channel Rumor"  is simply misinformation. Dakii is indeed member of Tails Channel, but his video was done independently from the website.

However, another member of Tails Channel, Azul, seems to support Dakiii's information (scroll down to Sonic Frontiers trademark post).

I trust a lot more to staff of Tails Channel than to random 4chan post, however, I'm not 100% sure that the information provided in the video is accurate.

It might not be on TC’s own website, but formal staffers still represent the website they work/write for, whether on or off the site… I think it’s fair to say that, while not a ‘Tails Channel Rumour’, the fact that this is all coming from Tails Channel staff is a significant factor in all this.

Anyway, I have learned a long time ago to avoid anything that comes from apparent insiders… let’s just hope these new rumours aren’t all coming from our learned friend Zip’ this time.

I don't really trust "apparent insider" since the Sonic Dimension thingy, personally.

And for me, I still see HUGE red flag on the one from the Sonic Channel staff, as the "insider" have info that make little sense, and give info that could identify them, when I'm pretty sure that they are under NDA. So I'm still running in only taking as source the Iizuka interviews + the initial leak (as the leak predicted successfully some elements in the trailer, and the name).

Going from "Frontiers is more anime-styled" to "Frontiers will be gacha" is a humungous and nonsense stretch.

Making Sonic a VTuber and being based on Zelda (itself a series that, like Sonic, is actually based more around western tastes than Japanese tastes and similarly isn't as popular in Japan as it is in the west) is also not evidence of any particular shift in design besides SEGA capitalizing on modern trends.

The more believable leaks have what fans "expect" to hear, not what they "want". Case in point the level design being "basic". After Colours and Forces, thats believable even if it doesn't sound good.

"Sonic game will be bad" is exactly what fans want to "hear" and to me is more evidence of it not being true simply because it's a critique that would appear for literally no other game in development but Sonic particularly because Sonic fans are eager for the next game to fail.

"Sonic fan uses any opportunity to complain about other Sonic fans for no reason"

No, if you want examples of Sonic rumors with things people want to hear, it's literally anything that involves other playable characters people actually like or remaking or following up the Adventures, or whatever. Things that come up with every single release and are always untrue. And we banned the guy that did that.

I didn't say it will be a gacha game. I said that it's a possibility that wouldn't surprise me. And even if I did say that:

Gacha games are a modern trend, are they not?

So, what are the odds of something for this game being shown at The Game Awards? Or are we likely getting something during next year?

I know I kinda asked something like this, or at least asked something where The Game Awards was included in an answer to that question, but I just want to make sure, if that is okay.

while I personally think a big event like The Game Awards would be the perfect place to show something off, I can't say it's likely we'll see anything. SEGA have not really had much presence there in the past as far as I'm aware

the cynic in me is saying that we are not going to see anything anytime soon. we'll probably not see anything until well into 2022 after the Movie sequel releases.

I actually had similar thoughts and guesses as to why something Sonic Frontiers related would NOT be at The Game Awards. I can still think there could be something before the movie. SXSW or whatever it is called, maybe?

Given that they first showed Forces gameplay at SXSW, that may end up being the case though I find it a bit weird that SEGA have chosen SXSW as their avenue for game reveals... it's not even a gaming focused event, it's mostly a music and film festival...

like, wouldn't it make more sense to show off your game at a gaming focused event?

Wasn't too familiar with SXSW when I first heard of it, and I did not know it was not focused on gaming. So with that, yes, I believe there are better events, mainly game related ones, to show Sonic news at.

this guy works with TailsChannel and he made this video giving details he got from a "reliable source"

I don't know if it's reliable at all. It gives some new info but a lot of it feels like a fanmade wishlist.

Is there a written summary. Not in a position to watch a video at the mo?

EDIT:
I don't buy them making Frontier a gacha game, but after Forces what the fuck do I know eh?

If SEGA are once again chasing ephemeral trends like they did famously with Shadow and the guns (what a tremendous success that was eh?), then this franchise is well and truly fucked. Fucked by a bunch of stupid boomers in SEGA's management who are too far up their own assholes and are trying to rely on trends to make a successful Sonic game, rather than just trying to make a good Sonic game from first principles.

The last 10 years of Sonic have been such a mass of disappointment (Mania not withstanding). Since Generations its honestly been pants. Why should any of us long-time Sonic fans be hopeful? Have no reason to. 2 good (arguably 4 if you count SA1 and 2, which I don't) 3D games in the last 20 fucking years. What a track record that is.

The video talks about Frontiers being the first Sonic game with a decent DLC like a season pass (to further rip off BotW but), I have my doubts, because SEGA seems obsessed with giving all the content at launch after the Super Sonic DLC fiasco in Forces and lack of DLC in TSR, I wouldn't be surprised if we get no DLC again, for better or for worse. The only thing that would make for a difference is that it seems Frontiers is a big budget game, got a lot of money in collaboration from Sony according to some rumours, so it might be possible?

The gatcha thing is obviously an assumption because SEGA likes to try to capitalize on every modern strategy that is successful. To be honest, that is possible as well but more with a pay to win mobile game.

Postmodern Sonic

This is going to sound uber dumb but

I am so unfamiliar with SXSW that I've always thought it was just some random Sonic convention or something, lol. And to think I was studying for a degree in film at one point. 😐

That said I hope we don't have to wait until the next one to see something.

surprisingly enough I see a lot of sonic fans who have the wrong idea about what SXSW is supposed to be. They think it's a gaming event or sonic convention, then they get disappointed when nothing major is shown off there lol

when SEGA make an appearance there, it mostly to show off non-gaming related Sonic stuff. They are really trying to push Sonic as less of a gaming icon and more as a multimedia brand.

My personal Sonic Frontiers idea(which probably won't happen) would have a theme of Sonic exploring a new island.

Gameplay

The player controls Sonic in a large open-world area that contains 8 main areas each original Zones similar to classic and adventure hybrid themes.

Should have lots of random crap to do like playing with slopes, loops, springs, or just making funny noises when during random stuff. A casino level could include all kinds of cool stuff to do, just think of the possibilities. Rings are hidden all around and can be collected by doing missions for npcs or fighting bosses. Red rings can also be found. New abilities can be bought with red rings along with Tails and Knuckles as optional playable characters(with unique abilities). Boost levels(similar to Generations) can be unlocked with rings.  The levels would be similar to the theme of the open-world area your in. Completing each one grants a chaos emerald and the next area. After completing the final boost level the final boss is unlocked.

Story

Sonic takes the Tornado to explore a new island. Once Sonic gets there he realizes after a little while that a powerful monster is trying to corrupt the flowing energy. A ghost girl who is struggling to keep the energy from the being corrupted teams up with Sonic to stop the monster. In the final boss Super Sonic defeats the monster. However the weakened monster manages to corrupt the island by tricking Sonic. In an explosion Sonic is thrown into the sky far away from where the events have taken place. The ghost girl becomes corrupted and teams up with the monster. Far away Tails, Amy, and Knuckles are flying toward the island with the Tornado 2000 in order to help Sonic. This sets up the events of the next game.

Release

Sonic Frontiers should release in November 2022 with lots of marketing building off of the popularity of Sonic Origins, Sonic the Hedgehog 2(movie), and Sonic Prime. Sonic Frontiers should have a totally different Switch version with smaller open-worlds and more emphasis on the boost(developed by Dimps). PS4 and Xbox One should be the same as PS5 and Xbox SX except from being slightly under-performing. SEGA should be aiming at 3-4 million copies in sales by January 2024.

Im not gonna fall for any leaks or rumored announcement dates past that one that was months early because I know damn well how desperate the fandom is for news right now. Every one just sounds like quelling boredom to me.

Simple look at recent SEGA titles reveal that they are actually already doing a lot of DLC to their games.

Super Monkey Ball  Banana Mania : having characters DLC announced before release, and it's a simple remaster, yet they found a way to add DLC

Shin Megami Tensei 5: several DLCs, you can even include SMT3 remaster having some DLC, including stuff that were already a part of the original release

Lost Judgment: having a season pass, lot of DLC, and one BIG story addition with playable different character that it coming spring 2022 that estimated to have a campaign about 8-10 hours, it's a huge deal cause Yakuza series didn't have a DLC of this kind before, they usually are small stuff like items and costumes

Virtua Fighter 5 remaster also had a DLC for costumes and it's a remaster

Persona 5 Royal also had a bit of new DLCs

So yeah, there is already a precedent for this in SEGA, i can actually believe them trying it for Sonic again, it has nothing to do with "ripping off BOTW" , and people seems to forget that AFTER forces fiasco with DLC, Sonic Mania got a huge expansion after a whole year from release, and it was received well, so it's not like SEGA is allergic to doing it with Sonic or anything

DLC doesn't really sound like a bad idea on paper, and Sonic games have had it before. The reason Forces was such a "fiasco" was because the one piece of DLC they tried to charge for (Super Sonic) was something that was in the game's code at launch and was blatantly unfinished. I'm more surprised they didn't just charge for the Shadow DLC. That may not have been good content, but at least it was new(ish) content.

I don't think it's out there to try again with Frontiers. Whether or not they make something worthwhile and worth paying for is a separate problem. Challenges and additional scenarios (and maybe characters, depending, I guess) doesn't really sound unreasonable at all, and it'd probably look like a relief after what they tried to pull with Forces.
