Tails kinda did

Emerl was too strong to let live though.  He had to die.

Despite Sonic being able to beat him in the final battle, he was really only able to do that because of Plot Armor.  Toward the end of the game, Emerl was curbstomping all of Sonic's friends with ease, including a final bout with Sonic and Shadow at the same time. No one could touch him. If he didn't die, then he would have been the solution to every problem from that game moving forward.

Except this one: Sonic's friends losing their purposes.

Have him fry his circuits enough to bring him down to more practical levels.

Though, it'd really just amount to him taking on what Gemerl's role is now, most likely, so it doesn't make much difference.

Emerl's whole shtick was to copy everyone else's best moves and immediately throw it back into their faces. All the moves he learned from each of his friends. If you take that away... its not really him anymore. Sonic X really cheese'd him out of his full potential, but in the games he really is an all or nothing affair.

I don't think that's something you can handicap without removing its relevance entirely. How do you respect his growth through the game and diminish his end potential at the same time? It wouldn't feel the same.

Power levels are dumb and Emerl's meaningful growth isn't about how good he is at beating people up.

Keep his mind intact; keep the person he grew into and the relationships he built with others. Restrict his "powers" and explore how he adapts. Maybe limit his "storage space" so he can only keep a couple of abilities at once, like a pokemon. Maybe make more complicated abilities like chaos powers too difficult for him to copy; either he can't do it at all, or he risks damaging himself further by trying. Hell maybe ditch the copy powers entirely and rely on whatever mundane upgrades Tails can make compatible with his half-busted ancient tech.

The next thing you'll know is, he'd be copying Blaze and Silver's powers.

I suppose there could be a power inhibitor chip/software that would keep him from hurting good people.

And what would be the point of keeping Emerl alive?

Taking the saddest death in the franchise, making Gamma look like comedy hour, away?

Creating yet another Sonic friend to feed?

Emerl's story was his growth. Seeing him evolve from weak mute to fully realized person with great strength.
While he took most from Sonic, every other character taught him something. So when we fully 'grown up' story had to end.

Which they already did by resurrecting him Gemerl, having him pal with Cream as a sort of big brother figure? Seems they found a new point for keeping Emery alive.

Other than that, I figured he’d be useful in learning more about the Nocturnus clan that created him, and Nestor who he befriended.

Honestly, depends on narrative, but there’s a lot more you can do with him alive than you think. Not that they’re not doing that anyway with him as Gemerl.

Many Sonic friendos abilities aren't that strong, so even If Emerl copied everything, those abilities at most come in handy as much, rather than turn him into an unbeatable fighting machine.

The premise of Sonic and Tails helping an arcane contraption achieve his Übermensch is nothing new under the sun but cool nonetheless. Such a shame that in execution ended up as an excuse to make everyone involved just beat the shit out of each other.

I liked the entire Sonic Battle arc was  Emerl's journey on his quest for wholeness, which sadly was doomed to fail sooner or later, because as the gizoid It will always exists the possibility of a higher power bending his will to its own benefit.

Also liked He was bound to Shadow's backstory, which sadly wasn't explored much. With the notion of having his share of Maria's heart not adding anything to tell about emerl's character but a meaningless lore tidbit.

Gemerl is very ambiguous.

Gemerl was "made from Emerl's data" by Eggman.

What does that mean? Did Eggman simply create a robot very similar to Emerl? Or by "Emerl's data," do they mean that Eggman built a new robot and somehow managed to salvage and then implant the actual memories and data from Emerl?

If it's the latter, then Emerl lives on as Gemerl. But I feel like they left it vague enough that it could be read either way.

Gemerl is weaker, as he was made from merely the leftovers of Emerl.

Sure, but that doesn't answer whether or not Gemerl's AI and memories are part of those leftovers.

That's the big ambiguity over whether we should or shouldn't consider them the same character.

Oh, that! Well, let's say he's some reincarnation.

That would have been a sight to see.

I always liked his addition to the mythos a lot more than the Black Arms. Strengthened the connection between Gerald studying the Echidna civilization(s) and his rampage would have given GUN another reason to shut everything down.
