This topic was good and got turned into Teaser Shows First Sonic Frontiers Gameplay, More Details Coming Through June at some point.

Open world combat puzzle focus is not my idea of a Sonic game, but so far this looks loads more interesting than Sonic Forces so I'll probably end up picking this up after all.

I think that the game is going to be solid and decent but not very fun, or at least not for me who already got bored to death by Breath of the Wild.

But the thing that I like the least is the mood... usually all the Sonic games have this exciting feel, and the musics highlight it; also in the past Sonic games, each zone was its own little world and had a different style, different musics, different atmosphere.

Now from this game I expect to have this sad and desolated mood and relaxing musics for every area of the world... maybe that's not the case, but I don't think it really fits Sonic, especially since it also gets very repetitive when other open world games already did this style before, and this is nothing new.

Overall, I think I have to wait for other 5 years for another chance to get something that interests me, sadly (unless that 2D game from the rumors exists, which at this point I really hope it does, as unlikely as it is). Can't Sonic just be Sonic for once?

Also, Aonuma already ruined Zelda for me, was it really necessary to also ruin Sonic in the process? (I mean, many people like that type of games, I don't).

But all of this is not really disappointing for me, I expected it, it's just that until the last moment I still had a small bit of hope that it could have been something a bit more unique and original compared to what we are getting, and now that hope is kinda gone, confirming that it's just exactly the same as how that 4chan leak described it.

We’ll see actual footage tomorrow. That’s about all I can take from it. Looks pretty, otherwise.

Here's some high quality screenshots from the trailer (via SEGA JP PR) and the logo in high quality. Enjoy! :)

On the large rock to the right of the wheel, you can see a small, round, grey creature hopping up and down. It's this one of the Korok rip-off?

EDIT: Actually there's two more of them closer to the camera. You can see them at 10 seconds into the teaser.

I said it in the big thread, but I’m at least more intrigued than I was before. More ways of attacking enemies that still look like speed, doesn’t look like you’re in a hallway with Boost, the rail and boss is curious. The momentum-based being there or not is 🤷🏻‍♂️ To me as long as the controls feel fine. Personally, I have have no real issue if 3D Sonic isn’t as momentum based as 2D. Now I’m mainly curious what the progression/mission design will be.

Not a lot I can say that won't pre-empt some things, but my broad feeling about this is... mild interest? It does feel a lot like SEGA has airlifted the overworld from the PSO 2 remake and plopped Sonic in the middle of it all. Not sure how I feel about a world that doesn't have some of that iconic art design (checkered hills, blue skies, that sort of thing). But it seems like Sonic Team is at least taking a risk with this, and I like the idea of exploration (or at the very least, not constantly running forward to get to a goal).

I think some people have commented on how empty the overworld looks - I am sort of in that boat, hopefully there'll be more stuff populated when we see more of it later this year. Although I guess the other side of that argument is, if you have a character that goes super fast in the first place, do you want to have every square foot littered with something? Might cause a bit of an issue with gameplay flow, I dunno.

Anyway, curiously optimistic, like I am with most new Sonic reveals! :P

I don't really mind the combat, depending on how it goes, frankly. The key thing they'd need to avoid is Werehog-esque/Rise of Lyric types of slow, spongey enemy design. In all honesty, I never really thought combat was particularly a bad thing for Sonic, so much as it's never been integrated right at all.

The Werehog had the flashy style, the combos and attacks all had flair, but the music, and impact completely let it down, where despite having all these big flashy combos and moves, the damage you did still felt utterly woeful, and the stages consisted of nothing but constant fight after fight.

Meanwhile, Rise of Lyric had the opposite issue - attacks had weight and impact, enemies went down fairly quickly - but there was absolutely zero flair to it. It was constant boring punches and kicks, which made the encounters even duller, again not aided by the fact that it was focused so heavily on puzzles and combat.

The key here - if it manages to strike it - would be something akin to DMC, or Metal Gear Rising - alright, slow Sonic down a bit for combat, but still keep it relatively fast-paced, have enemies go down within a fairly quick amount of time, make the attacks have some impact and weight behind them, allow the combos and attacks to have some visual flair. If the game already has it mixed between platforming, speeding around the world, puzzles, and integrating speed into the combat, in my eyes at least, it's pushed itself further forward compared to the Werehog and RoL. It still remains to be seen how exactly it'll play out when we get a full trailer, but I'm definitely intrigued, it's nice to see SEGA actually stepping outside their comfort zone and readapting and reinitiating on the Boost formula in a new way, instead of scrapping everything once again, or making another bare basics, budget Boost game like Forces.

Looks better than anything they have put out in the last few years sonic wise. The music is nice and also the graphics and sound effect sound almost as if they took them from pso new genesis. I look forward to it but will wait till we see more. Sega is good at trailers but the end products are usually eh.

Mainline 3D Sonic game without Dash Panels?! OH MAH GO—

The teaser looked okay, interested to see what they are about to reveal of this game tomorrow.

Well, Breath of the Wild 2 looks about as expected. So where's Frontiers?

On a more serious note, I am completely unenthused. The visuals don't look like Sonic, the music sounds more like BOTW than Sonic, and the focus on combat and puzzles is not what makes Sonic....well....Sonic.

It's so frustrating that they look for inspiration in literally everything except Sonic Adventure. Like DLJadow1 said in his retrospective, you have a 3D formula that works, stop being cowards and actually use it.

Cautiously optimistic, but also reasonably hyped! That teaser got me a bit excited, not gonna lie.

Huh.

Y'know, these lads look a lot like the orb Badniks from the movie:

Other than that, it looks fine, I guess? It's still just a few seconds of gameplay, so I can't really glean much from this.

I really hope we get more environments than generic open fields. Sonic's world is incredible; Being able to explore checkered hillsides and snowy mountains and neon-lit casino cities and deadly robot-filled factories sounds incredible. So I really hope we're getting more than just the basic green greens we've seen in the trailers so far.

Not of a fan of the combat. Every single time Sonic Team has attempted to shove combat into Sonic, it didn't turn out well.

Why do I feel like this is just the first instance of the games taking influence from the movies?

...do you hear that pained screaming in the distance or is it just me?

I’m very interested but I agree with some others. the game does feel very non-sonicy. its like Sonic got sucked into breath of the wild.

Not sure why they couldnt have stuck with this but made the world more true to Sonic’s universe.

Also this gameplay proves that so called leaked play test was true… i hope they fixed it from those play tests, cause the previews at the time said the game was dull.

A lot of the issues I have with it are the same, not that I expected them to change. The world doesn't look very Sonic-oriented, the one aspect that's been added sticks out like a sore thumb. The combat must be the main draw of the game, because it doesn't look any more fun to traverse than any another 3D game's open world. One of the credible leaks did say the Generations-style Cyberspace sections were the better part of the game though. Still not totally sold on the combat, but we've been aware it was a thing for a year now, and it's happening, like it or not. I'd really rather not have to hit anymore than twice in a Sonic the Hedgehog game, but this doesn't look quite like many Sonic games we've seen before. It could be fun, I'm cautiously optimistic.

The Boost is severely nerfed in the open-zone, which was to be expected. You need to be able to move precisely, and not able to bulldoze through any enemy in your path. There's not even a sonic boom cone effect anymore. The base speed looks pretty slow actually, and the "boost" looks closer to the typical speed in a Boost game. Maybe you need to level it up? He's lost his memories and forgotten how to run.

We finally get away from GHZ and the first thing anybody can say is where are the checkboards? lol

Seriously tho, I'm not worried about the missing "sonic distinctive themes" for two reasons.

1. We already have confirmation of multiple islands in the starfall chain, so it'd be crazy not to expect the usual genre roulette of ice/fire/desert ect.

2. If the rumored "levels" take place in cyberspace, then they can literally be anywhere and anything. They don't even necessarily have to match the aesthetics of the rest of the game. You can have your casino's  or Eggman bases full of loops and corkscrews and not miss a beat.

It is boring looking due to the lack of Sonic art style. Looks like a fanmod of another game. The Roblox and Minecraft DLCs are better looking which is pretty sad.

It's not amazing, but I'm liking what I'm seeing here. It looks like it could be fun control, which is something I've been concerned about with 3D Sonic games for the longest time. It's too early to say that for sure though. And I'm honestly really liking the environment and enemy designs. It's just a shame about that Sonic model...

All in all, yeah. This is definitely more on the positive side of things. It's still shamelessly aping BotW though.

Why don't they just use the Unleashed model.

Its the best one they've ever made.

Gonna bring up my observation from when the TGA trailer was revealed six months ago...

Quote

On a last note, I think think this vindicates a suspicion I've had from the leaks--this isn't going to be a platforming game, not even in the collect-a-thon/sandbox sense like the aforementioned Mario, Spyro, or Banjo-Kazooie. The leaks on exploration and combat, and the naturalistic landscapes shown in the trailer, prompts me to believe this is a genre shift to action-adventure; like Zelda and other open-world titles. Whatever platforming that will be there is probably going to be secondary to the core gameplay, if not a total afterthought.

So uh, that seems to track quite a bit, even for a 30 sec. clip. Running across a field > running in a stationary giant hamster wheel > spincycle mechanic to perform a HA attack > aerial combat > grinding on a rail suspended in mid-air > running up a giant machine to attack it. Meanwhile, a lot of flat, bog-standard terrain in the immediate playspace that was shown.

Maybe they could prove me wrong when IGN's extended look drops tomorrow. But I'm not holding my breath.

It’s a big step up from previous entries, I can say that.

Stretching more into what I’ve wanted in it being more open, but they could improve the combat more—and hopefully the enemies aren’t as durable as the basic mook in Heroes started out as.

Game is shaping up to show they’ve learned a lot more. Although it’s still just a new take on what BOTW popularized—not a bad thing, mind you.

Edit—meanwhile, let’s all appreciate that (at the time of this post) it’s #3 on YouTube.
