I was 6 years old in 1991 and I got the Sonic 1 MegaDrive bundle for Xmas that year and as they say……That was that. He’s been with me ever since.

There wasnt really a becoming a Sonic fan for me. I was born '91 and have an 5 year older brother who was a Sonic fan, so Sonic was a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I guess I became more of a fan around Adventure, which was the first Sonic game I beat, and the advent of sprite comics, which I started making along with my own character, which lead me to Sonic fan games and communities.

Well, as far as I recall, Sonic 1 was the first game i ever played, it is one of the games that came in my Mega Drive III (which I still have); I was really bad at it, and rarely got past Marble Zone act 3, and never past Spring Yard act 3, still was my favorite game besides the difficulty, I wouldn't call me a fan at the time though; at the time I also watched Sonic SatAM, random episodes, and had two VHS tapes with episodes, It was one of my favorite cartoons.

Same when I got my Playstation 2, I had the Mega Collection +, and loved to play Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, still as bad as playing Sonic 1, still really enjoyed these games besides my lack of hability to play them. (at this point Tails became my favorite character).

Years after, I kinda forgot about the series, until Generations released, and I bought a copy of it, and got hooked on immediately, that sent me into looking back at all the games it represented which I didn't know existed, so I went back, and got to know Heroes, Unleashed, Adventure 2, Adventure, and all the other games (and their amazing OST's); also managed to finish the old games I was really bad at (this process of playing Generations and discovering all the other games tok me about 2 years, I went to play the game and read all I managed to find about it). At this point I was already a fan.

But what cemented and made me a fan for life were the Archie Comics, all the Flynn run, but specially #175 onward, all the way to the last Issue (and Universe too); the characters, the story, all the elements from different media well used together in that functioning world, that made me the fan I am today, and the fan I'll probably still be down the road.

I struggle to remember what exactly got me so interested in Sonic for a while. I recall getting Sonic Heroes on PS2 back when it was new, as well as the Sonic and Knuckles Collection on PC around the same time, and both managed to keep my interest for a little bit. Then when Shadow the Hedgehog released, I must've been begging to get it or something, because I ended up having it (on PS2 again) not long after its release. Around the same time, either me or my brother got the Sonic Gems Collection too, and that became THE Sonic game I'd boot up for a long time.

After that, there was a sizable period where the only Sonic... anything I watched were whatever shows popped up on TV that day (usually AoSTH or Sonic X). I didn't have an Xbox 360 or PS3, so my knowledge of Sonic 06 only extended to whatever demos were shown in stores (thank goodness). And while I did have a DS around that time, I'd never really payed attention to the Rush series (aside from ads for Rush Adventure on TV) and the most I'd played of handheld Sonic was my friend's copy of Advance 3.

Eventually, I got Sonic Unleashed (...on PS2. Again) and that managed to keep my attention for a while. At least, until we FINALLY got an Xbox 360 and I could play the HD version. That was the point, I think, where I became a big fan of Sonic.

By then, I started looking into other games in the series. I played the Rush games, bought the digital games on Xbox, and eventually (thanks to Summer of Sonic) even started reading the Archie comic series too! So... I guess you could say that, while the early 2000s games brought Sonic to my young, uncultured mind's attention, it was Unleashed that cemented my interest in the franchise.

My interest has admittedly waned since then, for a myriad of reasons, but it still holds a place in my heart.

I remember watching Sonic cartoons when I was a kid. But when I was a teenager my older brother had a Dreamcast and bought Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and other games. Sonic Adventure is the first Sonic game I played. I played SA1 and loved it. The characters, music, the different areas were cool. So every now and then I play SA1 and SA2.

Ever since playing those games I wanted to play other Sonic games. I wanted to know more about Sonic and the other characters and started drawing a few of them. Then I bought a few soundtracks and later started reading Archie and IDW comics.

I became a fan back in first grade when I saw some of the older kids with a strategy guide to Sonic Adventure 2 and the first Sonic Advance. Intrigued, I asked my parents to get Sonic Advance for me since I had a GBA and I was hooked ever since.

First time I played a Sonic game was at the very early 2000s so I've always been more fond on Modern Sonic stuff. I can't remember the exact game that I first played as all my earliest memories of those years feel like a single conglomerated day in my mind but the games I had then were Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic R, Sonic heroes (PS2) and Sonic Advance 1 & 2 so it must have been one of those. I definitely remember enjoying Adventure DX and Advance 1 & 2 the most so those 3 combined were probably what initially made me a fan.

I also got Riders 1, Advance 3, PS2 Unleashed, Gems Collection and Generations up to 2011 but despite being later on those were still part of my nostalgia days of Sonic memories and a big reason why I still like the series now.

My first introduction to Sonic was reruns of AoSTC on Toon Disney. Soon after I was introduced to the gaming side from playing SA2 on the Gamecube for the first time at a friends house around 2001-2002 and we put so much time in that game with attempting to beat every mission, versus mode, Chao garden and replaying the story mode. And that shared enthusiasm carried over to Heroes, X, Shadow and the first 2 Riders games.

Let’s just say it was a threefold process here; I was a huge Disney VHS watcher when I was wee; and I saw a commercial for Toy Story on Sega Genesis and wanted to play it. My dad brought out a Genesis, and while he didn’t have Toy Story, he sure had Sonic the Hedgehog. I was practically hooked; never figured out how to get past Marble Act 2, but the demo footage and manual were tantalizing enough. Would just be a fond memory… if it weren’t for the Sonic plush at Dennys… then after that renting SA2B. While I disliked the length of the Treasure Hunting stages, the character designs, lore, and music were all intriguing to me. Mega Collection not only having the Genesis games but also introducing me to the Archie Comics sealed the deal; this franchise was kind of a living, breathing world of characters. Futher, Paramount’s Great America sold Sonic plush and had more winnable at their games, and so I started collecting them. I remember having to get an AMY from EBay.

As for why I stayed after Lost World? It involves a hand-made Blaze plush, a gift I very much cherish even if she’s not accurate.

I said this story before: the Nostalgia Critic. I saw his review of AoStH+SatAM and got intruiged. From the show I got into the comics & then the games (my first was Generations, which is like someones first episode of a sitcom being a clip show)

We had a Genesis when I was little and we had all of them. A not-inconsequential thing was also that AoStH reruns were on Disney at like 5AM for seemingly forever.

I actually got into Sonic via the Archie comics before I ever played the games. I read the S&K and Mecha Madness specials and was really hooked. Later on after collecting some issues of Archie, I was given a Windows 95 PC along with Sonic 3D Blast. Sonic CD also became my first 2D Sonic game so I have a special attachment to it even if it's no longer my favorite classic Sonic game.

In the beginning, there was one.

latest?cb=20180728110722

I shit you not my grandma had some kind of demo for this thing...you could only play it once. I was like 4 years old, giggling like mad man, watching Sonic run through loops...until I ran into a badnik and died.

I started crying, the game was over, until...

"Sonic?" My cousin pondered. "Doesn't Sue have those in the back?"

She pulls out a genesis. The only game they had was Sonic 2, but that was all I needed.

Within ten seconds of holding the controller I was dead. My cousin laughed, but mom just wrinkled her nose up, looking at me in disgust.

"You're not doing it right. Here."

Turns out my mom and cousin both loved Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and showed me the ropes. I didn't listen to a word they said and just ran around a bunch until the chemical plant staircase would stop me, but I was having the time of my life. Sonic was back, and he wasn't going to disappear in my hands any time soon.

My brother was a little younger, but I still remember, after barely reacting at all to Sonic and Knuckles, his eyes going wide at Tails. He followed him around the screen like a cat following a light.

Eventually, my mom buys Sonic and Knuckles Collection for real, along with, eventually, Sega SMASH pack, Sonic CD and Sonic 3D blast. Sonic 1 escaped me until later, but just about every other major title from the classic era got in my hands some kind of way and took up space on my Mom's PC. I would get 30 minutes of computer time a day, and it would be all dedicated to trudging around the classic sonic world, going fast and looking for secrets.

I didn't get far in any game. If I made it past Chemical Plant Zone it was usually time up for the computer. I don't remember what was holding me up in Sonic 3D Blast, but I do remember that Spring Stadium was a rare sight. I got quite a bit further in Sonic 3, but the barrel stumped me. Every time I would get there, I would whine for my mom to come do it for me. She knew how, but she couldn't do anything about the fact that it took me so long to get through the level to begin with that the time limit kicked in.

I don't remember when this happened, if it was even possible on the PC version or if we figured it out on the gamecube version but my brother eventually figured out Tails was a co op character and he was...surprisingly content with that? Just fucking around, collecting hard to reach items and carrying me to hard to reach places. It didn't matter to him that I was leading. He fell into the role of Tails perfectly and actually ASKED to play that way most of the time.

Eventually, my mom had come away from our Sonic fixation with a fixation of her own: Getting us off her damn computer. For good.

"Christmas is comign up. You need to get him a game." She told my father. "He don't need nothing crazy. Just whatever has Sonic 2."

My father had his mission, dutifully carried it out and came back with the cheapest gaming system he could find and...some kind of Sonic 2.

My little baby bitch mind was blown. What the FUCK was this? Sonic in 3D? Sonic can TALK? He's like six feet taller now! That's cool! I was like 5 when I first played Sonic and 7 when I got this one. I was practically a grown man! It was like he grew with me! Does he have a brother now? I DO TOO!

I will never forget the first time I saw Sonic grind down a railing. I had never seen parkour or anything like that yet so it blew my fucking mind. The rocking soundtrack. The darker story. The constantly escalating setpieces. The bat lady that made me feel funny.

I still remember when, after the gamecube purchase I ran up to my mom and told her that I needed a memory card and another gamecube controller to get the full SA2 experience. She laughed, took a long breath and sighed. "I don't like Sonic anymore."

But they caved for my birthday, and all of a sudden SA2 expanded even further in terms of scope.

The sheer amount of CONTENT within the game. My parents always got angry when I would get a game and finish it within a few days, but I was eating off this for YEARS. I would finish other games and come back to SA2, struggling with the harder levels, replaying for ranks and chao stuff, or my favorite...

sonic-adventure-2-battle-buy-cdkey-4.png

Motherfucking battle mode. Sure, the classic games had versus modes but they didn't have battle mode. 12 playable characters. Every stage in the game at our finger tips. Anime style super attacks. Sonic Adventure 2 being just deep enough of a game that there were shortcuts and exploits to discover without it being too complicated for it. Me and my brother would be at this shit for hours. My sister would join in too for king of the hill type battles where the winner could stay on as long as they wanted.

Of course, while Sonic 2 and 3's co op taught us to work together, these battles engendered a heated rivalry between us. We never thought to compare Sonic and Tails, but Sonic and Shadow? Hero and Dark? Please. Every fucking time we'd play this game we would talk about who would win in a fight.

All that came crashing down when, after a few years of toiling away at this game, we reached the last story.

maxresdefault.jpg

I shit you not, this is gonna sound like a fake story, but it's really what happened. Our jaws were on the floor. "They're brothers!" My brother shouted. I cried.

After fighting about who would control what for the entire night, we were passing the controller around every time our hog of choice tagged in. We fucked it up over and over again, but we finally did it....saved the world with seconds to spare.

755

BROTHERS! BROTHERS CAN DO ANYTHING AS LONG AS WE WORK TOGETHER

I still remember the yell I let out when this happened. We were jumping up and down. Sonic and Knuckles made me curious about Sonic, Sonic 2 made me a fan, but SA2 locked me down for life.

I would love to talk about how Sonic Adventure technically got my sister into creative writing, or how I got so good at Sonic Riders I made my friends hate me, or how Shadow the Hedgehog made me into a man, but I have like 4 minutes left. I'm cutting it kind of close, and I only have so much time to save this thread...

More or less by watching Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and SATAM reruns, and later Underground, sort of. Underground reruns always aired really early so I would wake up in hopes that I could catch some of the episode, but I would usually only get to see the end of it. I ended up liking that bizarre show...but anyways, I really liked the fact that he was a speedster, as my goal at the time was to become the fastest kid in class, laws of physics be damned. Later on, I played Ultimate Flash Sonic, and later ended up replaying the demo for Sonic Generations over and over again at my cousin's house since he didn't want to buy the actual game.

I became a Sonic fan through playing the older games on the Sega Genesis growing up.  I'm getting ready to turn 32 in August, and Sonic just turned 31, so I've practically grown up with Sonic my entire life.  During high school I would visit sites like Sonic Stadium, SFGHQ, drunk duck, middle ground comics, Th Mystical Forest Zone, FB20XL, and various other places.   I always loved seeing what original sonic characters people would come up with and seeing them in fan comics or fan games.  I didn't own a dreamcast at the time and my parents wouldn't let me collect Sonic Comics back when Archie was publishing them, so fan comics was the next best thing, and now I'm keeping up to date with all of the new IDW sonic comics while trying to hunt down the older archie sonic comics as well.  When I'm under a lot of stress I usually turn to music or video games.  Thanks to the military I have really bad PTSD issues around this time of year, and one year I just decided to drown out all of the fireworks with my headphones and made this music compilation.
