DAY 4 - Sonic Game Challenge 1: Peek-a-Boo [30DOS22]

Recommended Posts

It's the weekend! And the fourth day of 30 Days of Sonic! It's time to get active - on Saturdays we want you to take part in...

The Sonic Game Challenge

Every week we will set a very simple (but hopefully quite fun) task in a specific Sonic the Hedgehog game/s. We will make sure that these games are titles that can be easily played on modern consoles and PC, so as to be accessible to everyone. These challenges will also not require anything super-dedicated, like an entire game completion or something like that.

Finally, all we want from you in these tasks is to provide screenshot evidence of you accomplishing the feat. This screengrab can be taken at any time from either screenshotting on your PC, or using the dedicated snapshot feature on your modern console's controller. You can send any snapshots you take from most consoles onto your social media accounts or a USB stick, which you can then use to upload/share in this topic. We're not going to be super-strict on proof here either, we just want to see you doing the thing (and doing it as well as you like!)

Those who participate in this challenge will be eligible for the following badge:

We'll give you a week to do this! You have until Saturday 11 June at 23:59 UK Time the end of the month to post your challenge proof.

Sonic Game Challenge

'Peek-a-Boo'

Find a Hidden Passageway in either Sonic 1 or Sonic 2 (Mega Drive/Genesis)

Just find a secret path in the original Sonic the Hedgehog or Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and take a snap of Sonic (or Tails) standing in it. To accomplish this you can use, for example:

  • The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Classics app on PC/modern consoles
  • The SEGA AGES versions of Sonic 1 or 2 on Nintendo Switch
  • The Nintendo Switch Online version of Sonic 2

Obviously there are only so many of these hidden passageways, so we're happy for duplicate screenshots of proof here. Here's our effort to kick things off:

Have fun!

I'll use this little alcove in Spring Yard Zone, since it's my favorite zone in the game:

Secret passage like a false wall?

My first instinct was to go with the Marble Zone Act 3 shortcut, but I have a feeling a lot of people are going to choose that one...

Here's this one from Spring Yard Zone! I always thought of this as Sonic 1's equivalent of Super Sonic when I was a kid.

fVSnQ9f.png

Also, if we take a slightly more permissive view of "hidden passage", here's the alternate exit in Spring Yard Zone Act 2, which I can hardly ever get to.

(Incidentally, during my first instinct to go to Marble Zone for its secret, I fell into the lava while rolling and immediately jumped out without taking any damage. That has never happened to me before. I didn't even know it was possible!)

Tired of drowning in that pink chemical water? Just skip the whole thing why don't ya!

Just before the water rising section, instead of zooming to the right, if you do a well-timed spindash jump, you can make it up to this secret path that leads you safely to the boss!

Not particularly well versed with Sonic 1 and 2 enough to know a ton of hidden places in the games, but here’s one from Marble Zone Act 2, where during the second lava stream sequence, you stay down in the lava instead of jumping off the floating block platform - you find a second floating block in the lava on the far left of the pool, and jump on and move left, leading to this secret area with two ring boxes and a life.

(Apologies for the image quality, I had to scale it down to fit SSMB, since the mobile version was the only one I had on hand quickly).

I definitely always knew this path and the convoluted way to unlock it (that only makes sense if you've played the Sonic 1 beta) was there. I definitely didn't only learn about it literally on the 18th of May, 2022 after having played Sonic 1 for probably 28 years.

What? I only own this on 3DS

I picked this area you have to roll through a wall to get through at the very beginning of Star Light 1. I didn't know this was here for years.

(Challenges that require you to play a game are neat. Would like to see more!)

Hidden area with three item boxes inside a wall in Act3 of Metropolis zone (Switch SEGA Ages):

Edit; Don't think this picture was showing correctly when I posted it yesterday. So I replayed this act this morning and took another screenshot.

Bit lazy but I'm short on time haha (and heck, it's a classic one anyway, well known but still not automatically granted without a little care in your movements):

Screenshot_20220604-213520.thumb.png.23304e4ba9735791e516f8ac0a8ea8cf.png

I'd have loved to have done a more meaningful one for me from Sonic 1 (I prefer that of the two) but I haven't played it for a while, and when I went to "Restore Purchase" it just opened up Sonic 2's page in the Google Store.  Love gaming in 2022!!

I also took a screenshot in Act 2 but only just realised I'd left Sonic hidden behind the wall...

Did it finally. My target was the one in Metropolis which I accidentally found previously while playing a rom hack, but I found a couple of additional ones on my way to Metropolis.

This one is the same that also @Sean has found.

This is not a secret wall passage but still an open area in the middle of a chain of cannons (if you manage to skip the cannons), which has a bunch of rings, an invincibility monitor, and if you fall down there's this.

MetropolisAct2.thumb.png.10e26f1b2b73b5ad7d977300a5fe1080.png

Metropolis Act 2. It's not that hard to find, but it's funny because the monitor is standing on those pipes.

Winston was awarded the badge '[30 Days of Sonic 2022] Game Hero Blue - Participated in one Game Challenge of the Week activity' and 5 points.

I hope this counts, it's in Chemical Plant Act 2 and it's on a lower path. It's very close to the infamous water rising platforming challenge, and it's basically these two platforms going back and forth that you have to plan your jumps on. Basically, just ignore that and use the bumper below in the water that's off screen, and use it to get to the middle platform in the water, and then jump to the right and there's an area that leads you to a 1-Up. Be careful though, because the area to the right of the 1-Up is a death zone. Hopefully I explained that right lol.

Fun fact I discovered awhile ago - if you connect up a PS4/PS5 controller via bluetooth to your phone or tablet of choice, you can actually play them on mobile with traditional controls.

Moot point since Origins is right around the corner, but still lol

Unfortunately, the touch controls for CD still show on screen even with a controller connected.

GHZ Act 3 has a neat secret area I didn't know about for a very long time, under the rotating spike log that has a waterfall. I had NO idea that existed until finding it in Mania's GHZ Act 2 (which is a lot easier to stumble into it in a casual run). My mind was blown when I checked the original level and something like that was already there. I never would have thought to jump over the spikes and down the cliff that was there because I always just assumed there would be a pit!

Exclusive Sonic Origins leak!!!!!!!! :OOOO

XRvAfIm.png

In the mobile remakes, you can play as Tails and Knuckles in Sonic 1, and use their abilities however you choose to! But what about the huge insurmountable wall in Marble Zone Act 1 that Sonic cannot climb? Well, Tails and Knuckles can climb it, of course! And you get a neat little reward exclusive to this version for doing so! There is no doubt that this little secret will be added to Sonic Origins too...
