Well Sonic's injured and exhausted from fighting Surge, so this is literally his best opportunity. Better hop on it like white on rice.

And here we see a good case of why Kit is like a drone following orders. Surge is like life support to him. Without her, he's basically panicking since he never got a choice for himself. Something tells me though that Surge reconnects with Kit sooner than the other front cover topics might suggest...

However, on the cover of issue #55 we see Kit in a bit of contemplation. What Tails said to him in #51 does seem to work like a small warning light in the dark corners of his manipulated mind.
