Cream Vanilla Zone: Rabbit Characters throughout the Sonic Series

Happy New Year, everyone!

If you’re like me and follow the Chinese Calendar, you’d know that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit.

Rabbits are actually one of my favorite animals and there are many Rabbit Characters I like across multiple series, including Sonic the Hedgehog.

For this topic, I thought of 12 different Rabbit Sonic characters from memory across different Sonic Universes and quickly jotted down what I remembered about them.

NOTES

1. A Few Honorable Mentions

• Sonic the Rabbit – there were many ideas for animals Sonic was going to be before Hedgehog was the final decision
• Mach the Rabbit – one of the scrapped characters that were part of the “Sonic is the leader of a Music Band” concept. He does appear in the Archie Comics as part of Mina Mongoose’s Band
• Beach Bunnies – a group of girls that, with Sonic’s permission, used him as a volleyball in AOSTH. They kind of have the same face as Babs Bunny…
• Johnny Lightfoot – I was originally going to talk about him but to be honest, I’m not as familiar with him as the other characters on this list and I didn’t want to do any Fleetway Fans a disservice
• Rabbit Girl - Remember that one Rabbit character from the Sonic Boom Cartoon? I didn’t and to be honest, I think I only remember her from 1 Episode… 
• Any AU Version of Bunnie Rabbot – let’s stick to the Prime Version of Bunnie for this topic
• Belle D’Coolette – Bunnie’s daughter from a possible future timeline
• Thorn the Lop – a member of the Mercian Freedom Fighters, which I forgot existed

Pocky

Spoiler

• First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog
• Last Appearance: Sonic Speed Simulator

Bunny Bio: Pocky is a species of rabbit that lives in many areas of Earth, including South Island, Westside Island, and Angel Island.

Unfortunately, over the years, Eggman captured many of them and used them to power his Badniks…

Fortunately, Sonic and the others have been able to free most of them.

 

Splats

• Last Appearance: Sonic Mania Plus

Bunny Bio: Splats was the first rabbit Badnik created by Eggman.

Although Splats appeared in promo, toys, and comics with the first batch of Badniks, it didn’t officially appear in the games until 25 years later in the Press Garden Zone Act 1 in Sonic Mania.

 

Bunnie Rabbot (aka Bunnie D’Coolette)

• First Appearance: SATAM Episode 2: “Sonic & Sally”
• Last Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog Archie #288

Bunny Bio: Originally, Bunnie was just your regular Rabbit Mobian living her best life.

That is, until she was captured by Robotnik’s Swat Bots and was stuffed into a portable roboticizer.

Although Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters were able to stop the machine before she was completely transformed, she became a cyborg as a result.

On one hand, Bunnie’s machine limbs gave her super strength and protection against certain attacks. In the Archie Comics, she was even given upgrades that allowed her to fly, transform her arm into a cannon, and even create a miniature shield.

On the other hand, being part robot made her vulnerable to computer viruses and techno mages.

Rabibin

First & Last Appearance: Sonic Triple Trouble

Bunny Bio: Rabibin was another rabbit Badnik created by Eggman.

They could be found hopping around the Meta Junglira Zone.

 

Jack Rabbit

• Last Appearance: Sonic Universe #49

Bunny Bio: Jack Rabbit was the leader of the Sand Blast Freedom Fighters, who live in their desert home, Sand Blast City.

While other Freedom Fighter groups were heroic and good, Jack and the Sand Blast Freedom Fighters were sadistic bullies who would do anything to anyone to get what they want.

When Sonic helped them fight against the some of the Robians, robotized citizens that are mindless and aggressive, Jack’s bright idea to protect the city was to keep Sonic & Tails as prisoners and force them to be the cities’ saviors.

Ever since Sonic destroyed the forcefield that protected the city, in order to escape with Tails on the Tornado, the Sand Blast Freedom Fighters have been a pain to deal with whenever the other Freedom Fighters or other heroes had to cross through the area.

Although Jack doesn’t have any special abilities, he loves using his blaster to take out an opponent.

Fast Fact: The Sand Blast Freedom Fighters’ designs are based on Looney Tunes, where Jack’s design is based on Bugs Bunny

 

Carrottia the Rabbit

• First Appearance: Tails' Skypatrol
• Last Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog IDW: Tails 30th Anniversary

Bunny Bio: Carrottia (sometimes spelled Carrotia) is one of Witchart’s minions.

Outside of that, not much else is known besides her battle against Tails in the Metal Island Area.

 

Pink Rabbits

• Last Appearance: Sonic Adventure 2

Bunny Bio: When Eggman tried to destroy Station Square, he managed to find a pink variety of normal rabbits that he used to power his Badniks.

These Rabbits could also be used to raise a Chao’s Speed Attribute. 

They will also sometimes give Chao a cute set of rabbit ears, paws, and fluffy tail.

 

White Rabbits

• First Appearance: Sonic Advance
• Last Appearance: Sonic Rush

Bunny Bio: Sometime later, Eggman managed to find a white variety of normal rabbits that he used to power his Badniks.

Fast Facts:

• In Sonic Advance, Eggman used them in the Badniks deployed in the Egg Rocket Zone & Cosmic Angel Zone.
• In Sonic Advance 2, Eggman stuffed them inside the Techno Base Zone Badniks.
• In Sonic Pinball Party, they came to a Casino Party, with other small animals from Sonic Advance, and got captured.
• In Sonic Rush, Eggman & Eggman Nega crammed them inside the Badniks deployed in the Water Palace Zone.

 

Cream the Rabbit

• Last Appearance: Sonic IDW Comics

Bunny Bio: Cream is a polite and kind young girl who lives with her mother, Vanilla, and her pet Chao, Cheese.

After Sonic saved Cream & Cheese from Eggman in the Leaf Forest Zone, Cream decided to search for Vanilla.

Ever since then, Cream has been a valuable member of Team Rose that should have more appearances in the games.

 

Vanilla the Rabbit

• Last Appearance: Sonic IDW Comics

Bunny Bio: Vanilla is the mother of Cream the Rabbit.

Besides this, not much else is known about her besides the fact that she’s a warm & loving parent and enjoys the quiet life.

While Cream & Cheese may join Sonic, Amy, and the others on adventures, Vanilla chills at home with Chocola & Gemerl.

 

Beauregard Rabbot (aka The Baron)

Spoiler

• First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog Archie #217
• Last Appearance: Sonic Universe #49

Bunny Bio: Beauregard was the Grandmaster of the Great Desert Dark Egg Legion.

He was also Bunnie’s uncle.

When all of the Robians in the region were restored to flesh and blood, they tried to go to Sand Blast City for shelter. 

Unfortunately, the Sand Blast Freedom Fighters decided that “Once a Robian, Always a Robian”.

As a result, the refugees had no choice but to join forces with Eggman and become cyborgs in order to survive in the region.

Luckily, Beauregard and his Dark Egg Legion chapter are the exact opposite of Jack and the Sand Blast Freedom Fighters and are actually honorable and respectful.

The only downside to Bunnie’s Uncle is that he may still hold a grudge against a rival family…

 

Rabbit Avatars

Bunny Bio: Many Rabbits volunteered for the Resistance and joined the fight against the Eggman Empire Army.

Although they didn’t have the same abilities as Cream, they all shared a special ability that gave them a longer rebound time (invincibility frames) after taking damage in battle.

1: Obviously Cream the Rabbit, one of my favorite characters in the series in general. I like her design, and when she's well written/portrayed, her personality too (Advance 2, Metal Virus), plus I love chao and she has a chao companion: some time ago I did a gameplay concept for a playable Cream the Rabbit and Cheese had the ability to copy animal traits to gain passive abilities for Cream: he could also copy some bunny traits from Pocky too.

2: I don't know... probably someone from the old comics, but I didn't read them so I don't know really. Of the characters that I'm familiar with, probably the avatar, just because it's not really a character, just a cutomizable skin.

3: Shadow the Rabbit exists in the alternate timeline where Sonic the Rabbit became the final design. Jokes aside, I don't know any other rabbit character aside of the ones listed in the post so I've nothing to say here.

4: I wouldn't mind other rabbit characters, though I prefer to have a bigger variety of species rather than getting more characters based on the same animal type. So, while I wouldn't mind, I would prefer not, let Cream be the rabbit of the group.

5: I found it funny when Carrottia said "Guess I'm defeated", because, maybe it's just me, but I read that as "oh well, I finally have a valid excuse to do nothing"...

1. Bunnie Rabbot. Her characters main gimmick of being half-roboticized is great, she's badass, she has a great personality, and ngl she's kinda hot. 

2. None really.

3. Nah.

4. No, it's more fun to bring in new species.

5. It was fun finding out about some characters I didn't even know existed.

You can add Spring Cream and Unicorn Cream to your list (in case you consider them as brand new characters from other dimensions as I do)... and let's hope a new Chinese year Cream Doppelgänger in a few days in SPEDD BATTLE!!...
