Dubious Depths: The R2 of Sonic CD: A little revalation

Thanks to MasterDreamcaster from Sonic Retro for finding this out. Anyway, hope it is okay to post all this.

As said before, this was found out by MasterDreamcaster on Sonic Retro. This was revealed to that user by Naoo Ohshima.

Here is the tweet with Naoto revealing R2 from Sonic CD, and what it was going to look like below the first tweet. The name for R2 ass going to be Dubious Depths.

Apparently, this was going to be an underground level for Sonic CD, the second level, or Round 2 (or R2) of Sonic CD.

So, what do you all think of this?

Interesting! This goes opposite ways of what I initially believed as a possible desert:

Which now makes me believe R2 didn't even make into the Little Planet artwork?

I remember the theory even went further, explaining R2 was the desert theme on the background of Collision Chaos.

Though a dungeon makes complete sense with the cut animation, from the ending:

You know, a dungeon setting would have been sweet to see to me in Sonic CD, as well as that badnik from the last picture you posted.

You know, I am not exactly sure what it was supposed to be in the end, but don't give up on the desert thing just yet; for all we know, it could have been a desert and an underground level. Maybe, maybe not, but there is still possible hope for your theory, which I do like, by the way.

That would be interesting for sure, though I believe it could be too similar to Tidal Tempest (pure speculation).

When Taxman was working on the 2011 remaster of Sonic CD, he found and shared some sprites likely belonging to R2, one of which are the animated badnik:

That theory I remember reading many years ago on a fan site, which wasn't even written in English. But yeah, looking at the animation, you can see some plants, which likely means the level wasn't 100% industrial/blocky. I guess it fits with the Little Planet art, then.  That one, or the one above the volcanos.

That makes sense. All of it does.

I would have loved to see Antlion in action. Makes me wish the whole thing was actually used in the final game.

But yeah, about what Dubious Depths could have been, nice thoughts overall. Makes you think, doesn't it? I would not have minded the level being an actual desert in any way, personally.

I like the name, fits well for what presumably would have been mostly an underground setting. So I'm thinking it would have been loosely based on Marble zone from Sonic 1 with ruins, lava, breaking platforms, rainbow waterfalls, lots of sand (maybe quick-sand with some Sandopolis vibes) with those worm & antilon badniks. The wind-turbine things (as shown off in the Little Planet concept art) to push Sonic upwards. Sounds like could have been a fun stage.

Most of Sonic CD's stages seem directly inspired by Sonic 1 stages, so I've generally tended to assume that R2 would've been the Marble Zone equivalent, the only S1 stage that's missing.  Sounds like that presumption was on the right track; it even follows the right stage progression - Palmtree Panic = Green Hill, Dubious Depths = Marble, Collision Chaos = Spring Yard and Tidal Tempest = Labyrinth.  (QQ and WW pad out the midgame, then it's Stardust Speedway = Star Light and Metallic Madness = Scrap Brain.)

some additional pieces that i have seen in the retro thread!!  one is that this music ^^  is considered to likely be the good future track in some form.  i have never heard this, it's one of the deeper ones from the whole CD soundtrack which makes sense considering the mysterious underground setting!!

this is a twitter conversation they linked on retro from 2021 where they asked if the D.A. Garden song was supposed to be for the second zone :) :)

there's also a new fangame in development called Sonic CDX which might hopefully be able to really create this particular zone, or otherwise patch it in later??  https://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?threads/sonic-the-hedgehog-cdx.41452/

Masato Nishimura who worked on CD has tweeted saying he thinks Ridicule Root was also considered as a name for R2.
