So how *do* you feel about newer Sonic games?

It's like a puzzle, these new games and their time in pre-release. At first, the first few pieces go well, and it looks nice from that point. Then at one point, we find some pieces missing and were replaced with pieces from a completely different puzzle, and depending on how many missing pieces there are, the end result is either alright, but very flawed in the long run, or just barely distinguishable as something good and an overall mess.

Well that's sorta harsh =/

Alright, I hope no one minds me reviving a topic that's been dead for two months. I recently played Sonic 2006, and I figured it would be better to just post my thoughts on the game here rather then start a topic about it. So, what did I think?

Short version: GAAAAAHHHHH, I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!!

Long version: I actually wrote an entire review on it. Here it is.

Here's my thoughts on each individual game...

Adventure: Loved it. Really a great first 3D step for Sonic and many ways to play the game with the different characters. Good story with Chaos, and yeah... generally just a classic.

Adventure 2: I loved it as well. Gameplay design for all the different types were great. Many people only found the Sonic and Shadow gameplay fun but I really liked the mech and treasure hunting too. They were pretty straightforward and easy to handle, and I generally saw nothing wrong with them. One of my favorite Sonic games.

Shuffle: Never finished it or really got into it. I guess it was okay for a party game.

Advance: Great. Just like the classics except the option to play as four characters really.

Advance 2: Wasn't too impressed. The game's major problem was the straightforward running practically all the time. You could almost beat the whole game just holding right. It wasn't as bad as it could have been, but I could've cared less about it. Getting the SP rings to enter special stages was a pain too.

Advance 3: It was fun, though like Advance 2 had the problem of being a pain to enter special stages. They seriously made these Advance games to the point where they flat out didn't want you entering them.

Battle: So-so. It was really just a bunch of fighting with what often felt like repetitive moves. You really could win just by repeatedly doing your special move over and over again.

Heroes: It was okay. The dialogue was extremely cheesy and it was pretty annoying how all the teams had generally the same moves and same levels. The gameplay itself was decent, though. I felt it had some good platforming and general fighting/action in there.

Shadow: Ehh... I guess I'd say slightly below okay, but not quite at the bad range. It was sort of cool all the different levels there were and all the different gameplay routes. And I felt the GameCube version had a much more decent camera and controls than the PS2 one. Still, it got annoying searching around for enemies to kill to complete the missions and the gun aiming wasn't the hottest.

Rush: Fun. It was a general high speed sidescroller, but it would have been much better if there was more platforming and not as much speed.

Rush Adventure: Same as Rush, except it had a bonus and a minus to it. Bonus being the extra islands and the missions instead of just the seven stages, minus being having to collect the items to make better ships to progress.

Sonic '06: It had glitches, framerate problems, extremely crappy town missions (and even worse waiting for the town missions to load)... but despite that, I actually did like this game. Most of the town missions weren't required, I loved the graphics, and it had an extremely touching and deep storyline to it. Music was amazing too and Sonic, Shadow and Silver's gameplay were fun, though I could've done without having to play as the amigos. I did love however how all the characters in it had distinct gameplay styles and moves instead of making them all the same.

Rivals: Eh... some catchy music and gameplay and stuff here and there, but nothing that really made anyone who wasn't a Sonic fan worth buying. It was just kind of "there."

Secret Rings: I really enjoyed Secret Rings. I liked the Wii remote usage, the variety of missions, the challenge, the music, the upgrade system, the graphics and the storyline. It was a great first step for Sonic on the Wii in my opinion.

Riders: Liked it. The air system was pretty fun and intriguing, same with riding on turbulence and doing tricks to gain speed. I also liked all the different gear you could use and buy. It was a great racing game even if that's not what Sonic's normally about.

Rivals 2: Didn't care for it. The story was blehish, music was too, and the missions were annoying, pointless and stupid. I also didn't like the extra required bonus stages like Knockout and capture the Chao... so yeah.

Unleashed Wii/PS2: A bit better than Rivals 2 though still had major problems. Sonic's stages were extremely scarce with a hard to control boost move along with mainly nothing but running forward in his stages. Werehog's stages were way too frequent and the combat system was lacking a lot compared to the 360's versions. Graphics weren't too appealing and I thought it was stupid how the towns were just point and click.

Unleashed 360/PS3: Now this is what Unleashed really was. A pretty even split between Day and Nighttime gameplay, much more in depth combat system, the addition of Empire City, really sweet graphics with the Hedgehog Engine, much easier boost controls in Daytime, great soundtrack, extra acts, downloadable extra acts, actual towns you could walk around in... this was the best Sonic game in years, easily rivaling the Adventure games. The only thing that I could have done without was required medal collecting, but I eventually got used to it so it didn't bother me.

Zero Gravity: Major disappointment. It really took everything that was fun out of Riders and watered it down to an extremly bland and dull racing game. The gravity aspects was pretty unengaging and they took out the ability of doing tricks and getting scores based off them, not to mention the turbulance air gaining and the challenge of keeping up your air. They didn't even have a boost move in ithat also attacks enemies in the same time. I can only hope Free Riders will make up for this mess...

Black Knight: Another failure. The sword gameplay got really boring, old and generic and taking out the Wii remote controls Secret Rings had was disappointing. I thought those controls made the game much more involving.

So yeah. I'd say it's had its bad games, but for the most part I'm satisfied with the franchise and am confident in its future.

My thoughts.

1. Sonic Adventure: LOVED IT. My most favorite Sonic game. The gameplays (even Big isn't bad once you understand the controls and power yourself up), the story, characterization, everything. By GOD, the story. When playing the characters, it was so very cool to see how the story is woven together and how they all associated with Tikal, Chaos, and the older and greedy echidna tribe. A great balance of humor and drama (the last story was pretty dark with the chao getting run over and dying; I can't blame Chaos for being so angry). The Rashoman-type structure of Adventure is one of the most unique and my most favorite storytelling type in a Sonic-'verse. The only thing from completing this game is the Chao Garden, which I found to be tedious and a waste of time. Aside from that, though, fantastic!

2. Sonic Shuffle. *thumbs down* Not good at ALL. Very poor graphics, and the gameplay feels stiff and automatic. Even when playing as the character, I sometimes feel like he's an AI, especially during the minigames. The only good parts are the unique ideas, story, and the humor. My least-favorite Modern Era Sonic game.

3. Sonic Adventure 2: Again, LOVED IT. My second-most favorite Sonic game, and my most favorite Sonic story. The characters presented are fleshed out even more, with the Hero and Dark sides presenting their versions of one story that coincided at the end. It isn't like the Rashoman version in Sonic Adventure, but it's still very well-done. My most favorite part is how EGGMAN develops hundred-fold as a character, and how he's not the "ho-ho! I'm EVIL" character that was perceived. He has pride, humor, and morals, and his mech-shooting stages are just wonderful. Seriously, I LOVE Cosmic Wall! The Last Story is beautifully told, and the ending with Shadow's supposed "death" made me cry. I love the speed stages the most, but the mech-shooting and collecting have more replay value. Aside from Mad Space and its icky gravity physics, the only thing I didn't like about the collecting was the revised "Emerald" radar. And the grade system is one of my most favorite parts, for it allows me to continue playing the game and get better at what I do. Again, the only thing that has prevented me from completing the game is the Chao Garden for reasons stated above. Aside, though, SA2 is a very great game.

4. Sonic Heroes: I'm so-so in it. The concept is good, VERY good. Graphically, Heroes really reminisces of the Classics. The colors are surreal, and the stages are both cartoony and realistic at the same time. Unlike what many say, I find the teamwork gimmick to be very well-executed, and I don't get tired configuring with the controls or traveling along paths while seeing which ones fit the most. Another thing I like about the game is the difficulty. Unlike Sonic 2 (Game Gear), the difficulty curve can get incredibly steep, but it doesn't deter me nor make me want to put the game away. But the game, though, has problems, and I find many to be big. Gameplay-wise, the game is WAY too automated in physics. Whenever I go through various certain points in the stages, the game plays by itself, particularly ramps and loops. It isn't the level design that I have a problem with, but the controls and physics that go with it. The gameplay lacks the polish that Adventure and Adventure 2 have. But it's not only the gameplay that lacks the polish, but the story, too. The story is plain abysmal! From a very obvious grammar mistake in Tails's dialogue to horrible characterization of over half the cast. The only ones that were done well were Team Chaotix and Team Rose. However, I'm not going to call Heroes the worse game nor am I going to completely hate it just because the story stunk. Great concept, but the execution could've been MUCH better.

5. Shadow the Hedgehog: I like it and is in the top seven of my favorite Sonic-'verse games. One criticism of ShtH is that it isn't a Sonic game. Well, you're right, it isn't. Because aside from being shoe-horned, the other characters — excluding Eggman — had almost no role. Shadow's the main character; it's a Shadow game (no pun intended [/Yu-Gi-Oh reference]). Like Heroes, there is a lack of polish here. The in-game background graphics are flat and polygonial, while Heroes is a bit more streamlined. And there are gameplay issues, like some of the missions (Lethal Highway's "Destroy the Ship" being one of them, another being to take down the plane riding the president in another zone). Of course, there are level design problems, too. Levels like "The Doom" are a sandbox mess (reminds me of playing Casinopolis as Sonic). And there are character problems. While I like Black Doom, he has no development, and he comes off as completely flat. The dialogue is good in many areas, but when it comes to inserting swearing, that's completely out of place. Not because it doesn't fit the characters, but that they felt inserted like a copy-and-paste. But there are positives. The characterization of Shadow was much better, and the way the story is told is quite interesting. All those "What-Ifs" regarding where Shadow wants to lead his "destiny" is very interesting, and we learn how Shadow would behave if he went that far. The branching stories create plotholes, but I find them to be pretty easy to solve: everything up to meeting Doom's eye is canon, and everything else isn't. The weapon gameplay is actually rather cool and, maybe depending on which console (I have the Gamecube version), very good. While you can play most of the game without the weapons, using them makes the game a lot easier and a whole lot of fun. IMO, the weapons better the gameplay experience. And the level design, aside from some levels, aren't all one path. You can xzoom around and find several different pieces of treasure or different corridors. Not all the levels are one straight path, and there are platforming and puzzles in several areas. The branching stories help give the game a ton of replay value; I can play the game and, while the endings may be the same, the way to get is not. And the gameplay isn't as automatic as Heroes; it doesn't play so automatically, and Shadow isn't so slippery. In all, it's a game that, with more refining in gameplay, story, and ports, could've been REALLY good. But it's still good. But this game, heed my words, is NOT for everyone.

I have not played any other modern game, but I would love to buy Unleashed 360 someday. I just need the income before I get it.
