Sonic Smarts Tier List

So we've got a dandy little tier list going on ranking Sonic the Hedgehog characters in order by their physical strength in combat. But just who exactly do you think the cast ranks in other aspects? Ranking in similar format to Aquaslash's topic.

Highest Tier

Very High Tier

High Tier

Average Tier

Low Tier

Very Low Tier

Lowest Tier

First round is centred on intelligence. Rank characters and explain why you believe they should go where they go. I'll start with my take on things:

Supergenius Tier

Omochao - For I am led to believe that this little guy literally knows everything. It's certainly a good thing that he's neutral - I would hate to see what horrible things would happen if his power fell into the wrong hands.

Prof. Gerald Robotnik - Stated by Eggman himself to be "the greatest scientific mind in the history of the world", he certainly proved himself to be so with his wide variety of brilliant futuristic inventions that placed him in such a high regard among the scientific community that he's still considered to be a super-genius 250 years or so into the future.

Genius Tier

Dr. Eggman - Inventiveness runs strong in the Robotnik family tree. Great at robotics.

Dr. Eggman Nega - He's a pretty smart cookie. eh screws around with the space-time continuum and doesn't afraid of anything.

Tails - This foxy boy is a mere eight years old and he's single-handedly created fully functional submarines and planes out of nothing but some zany shiny rocks, and also managed to artificially engineer a Chaos Emerald on his own - even surpassing Gerald's Chaos Drives in power. Madness!

Wave - She's a very skilled mechanic with crazy Babylonian techie skills that were passed down to her from several past generations. Another smart cookie.

Smart Tier

Rouge - Very cunning treasure hunter and G.U.N. agent so highly ranked that she takes orders straight from the UF President. Great at hacking computers, infiltrating high security bases, and deceiving people. Her written reports back to G.U.N. are extremely detailed, and she seems to store all of this information in her head at all times (such as her rambling about Soleanna's constitutional monarchy system). She's freakin' intelligent. I can see why Wave and her are stated as being potential rivals.

Blaze - Another really smart girl. She knows about Sol Emerald mechanics ("Tails, can you build a device to scan and analyse plasma and electromagnetic signals?"), is bilingual, knows her world's history quite well, and comes off as being a generally acute person.

Lord Regis - Not only was he a researcher stationed in Aquatic Base to work on the Solaris Project 10 years ago in another timeline, but he also managed to be the sole surviving scientist of that crazy explosion incident and managed to become reigning mayor of Soleanna Castle Town years later. He's science smart and politics smart!

Vector - He is a detective, after all. Was the only one out of the thee Chaotix members to see through Eggman's disguise in Heroes at least.

Average Tier

Most everyone else goes here.

Dull Tier

Vanilla - She has to be the single most oblivious parent ever in the series. Sends her daughter to run off with some crazy purple stranger chick claiming to be a princess straight into the dense forest in a search for "Sol Emeralds" and doesn't afraid of anything. Not to mention all the crazy other ventures she lets Cream get into. How many times could have that little girl potentially died, exactly?

Knuckles goes here.

Stupid Tier

Big - Simply for not receiving an education or having much exposure to the world outside of Mystic Ruins, he's not all too super bright. But he's a kick-ass survivalist and nature-nut, though. Somehow managed to board the Space Colony ARK though. And can communicate with giant prehistoric fish skeletons. Hmmmm. On second thought, he may rank higher than Vanilla.

Storm - Egg...head? Egg...salad? No...

Brainless Tier

Eggman being in anything but the highest possible tier doesn't sit well with me for a moment. I'd switch him round with Robotnik Sr... becuase if Gerald's so smart, how come he's dead?

Not to mention that everything he tried to do failed miserably:

  • Biolizard needs life support
  • Emerl went crazy
  • Artificial Chaoses went crazy
  • One grandchild went evil-crazy
  • Other grandchild went capped in the head
  • ARK turned into a superweapon rather than a peaceful colony
  • Project Shadow got everyone shot
  • Shadow himself was a) psychopathic, and now B) disavows himself of Gerald and Maria entirely
  • Didn't succeed in researching immortality
  • Didn't even succeed in curing AIDS NIDS

In conclusion: Gerald --> dullard plz. At least Robotnik Jr. managed to fracture the planet. Twice.

Put Tails and Eggman in Supergenius, they're equal in brains, and bith have preformed feats above Gerald Robotnic (except for Shadow, but he was just a bit of cloning and gene messing ya kno) and they both have IQs over 300. They're like, ULTRA Geniuses.

But other than that you've got it right.

Tails hasn't built anything on that scale, but why would he ever need to? He's not the one who's planning on taking over the world, y'know, and he's also got the small handicap of being eight. I would put him a level below Eggman, though, at least for now. Give Tails a little time and I'm sure he'll move up a notch.

...I really think there ought to be a level or two between "average" and wherever Big and Storm are, though, so we have somewhere to dump Knuckles and Marine.

Tails has rocket ships lying around. That, and they're both confirmed by Sega to have the same IQ. Tails COULD build anything Eggman could, but either lack funds or the fact that he could just not want to means he hasn't.

Also Tails' modifications to that biplane have allowed it to easily fight all of the guns and weapons on Eggman's Egg Carrier (essentially a smaller and more useful Death Egg) and then take out two of Eggman's large battle ships in Unleashed. With a biplane. Oh, and most of his support badniks.

Oh, and he made the Tornado use static electricity to power its weapons in Unleashed (at least that's what it seemed from the rapid button pressing) meaning essentially unlimited fire.

Tails' working on the Tornado a bit > Eggman's entire flying force.

Also the Death Egg was just BIG. Eggman did nothing with it.

I wouldn't be against bumping Knux down a tier. I mean sure, he's not fucking retarded to the same extent Big is, but any talk of technology seems to baffle the hell out of him (Riders demonstrates this rather hilariously), and he's always the first person to suggest bashing the shit out of things to solve problems. And let's not forget his infamous gullibility stretching across various instances in the series, most notably in S3&K and at least three incidents I can recall through the Sonic X series.

Does the professor in Unleashed count for anything? I can't remember his name right now but he certaintly had quite a brain on him, if only in a completely different field to Tails and co.

Meh, I was being a wee bit generous towards those guys. Previous "dull" tier members have been DEEEEEMoted.

Order's been changed around a bit. Eggman got a PRRRROMOTION and took Nega's spot. I'm still a wee bit hesitant to switch Eggman and his grandpa around, though. Emerl technically wasn't creation to begin with, so I'm not going to fault him for it going awry... not to mention plenty of Eggman's robots have gone off the deep end in rebellion as well. Gamma and Omega, perhance?

Oh, and there's still that 50 year handicap there. Gerald was still extremely advanced for his time period after all.

Supergenius Tier

Omochao- I completly agree with Spagonia on this one, this little guy knows every little detail of the world and the characters. For crying outloud he knows how everyone attacks plus their special weapons. If he was go evil, the world would be screwed.

Genius Tier

Eggman- The guy build robots, killing machines, air forts, and a space station about the size of a small moon. Damn this guy has his stuff down, and he's constantly showing off his mechanical skills.

Tails- For a fox who's only 8 years old, he has the skills that rival or even surpass Eggman's mechanical genius. His gadgets are astounding and his machines are just awesome.

Smart Tier

Rouge- She's a spy for GUN. Not only that she knows how to hack computers, she can store mass amounts of information in her head, and she can device people incredibly well. These aspects alone make her a very smart individual.

Average Tier

Basically the majority of the cast falls in here.

Dull Tier

Knuckles- He's not very bright, but bright enough to be above the stupid tier. He's so easily tricked, and there are times when even the simplest situation gets the better of him. However he does know how to work out solutions to complex issues.

Brainless Tier

Big- I just can't figure this guy out. I can't tell if he's brainless or if he's acting brainless. He's an enigma that I just can't solve, and it bugs me to no end.

I can't think of any other characters right now, but I will post when something hits me.

BAWWWW I'M INSUFFICIENTLY WELL-FUNDED OR MOTIVATED TO DO ANYTHING IMPRESSIVE

What does Robotnik do when he doesn't have the items he needs for his giant inventions? He breaks into Security Hall, the most secure military vault on the planet, steals whatever the hell he likes, and then nukes Prison Island to glass just to cover his escape.

Saying "Tails hasn't built it because he hasn't tried, but he could if he did" is like saying "The only reason I'm not President is because I don't want to be" - that is, a load of hogwash. Besides, the fact that Tails lacks the vast scope of ambition and determination to build anything on Eggman's scale is only another point to Eggman.

Maybe Tails is top of the Tier list in aerospace engineering, just as Wave is top of the tier list in Extreme Gear engineering. Let's see what Eggman's at the top for:

  • Robotics (duh)
  • Artificial intelligence (Metal Sonic, Metal Knuckles, Puppet Tails, E-100 series, blah blah)
  • Criminal mastermind! (Aforementioned SA2 heist, '06 Rimlight corporate espionage)
  • Temporal mechanics (CD, '06)
  • Space megaengineering (Umpteen Death Eggs)
  • Land megaengineering (Scrap Brain, Metropolis)
  • Sea megaengineering (Ocean Base in SA3; I'm sure there's more)
  • Air megaengineering (Altitude Limit, Wing Fortress, Flying Battery)
  • Corporate Economics (Riders Robotnikcorp, Zero Gravity MeteorTech, casino zones)
  • Industrial automation (Any of his factory/bases)
  • Physics (HE'S CHARGIN HIS LAZOR)
  • Chemistry (Chemical Plant Zone, Oil Ocean)
  • Biology / Cybernetics (Gene Gadget Zone, the processes of robotization and roboticization)

I think mah point is made :P

I agree with your posts even as an Eggman fan except this one. While not EXACT since we never got to see what the Death Egg was capable of, we do know that in Sonic Battle, the Death Egg 2 has a laser capable of destroying Galaxies.

While I disagree with all those posts as an Eggman fan, I have to disagree with this one too.

THere are SO many things wrong with the Battle weapon that it isn't even true. Of all the stupid, impossible things that have happened in the Sonicverse, that scene is by far the worst offender against basic science. EVEN IF the Final Egg Blaster worked faster than the speed of light, and EVEN IF it could take out an entire star cluster with one hit, you wouldn't see the effects until the light travelled all the way back to Mobius - which would take, at best, years.

I reckon that weapon was a fake. Robotnik just played Emerl a convincing simulation in an attempt to cow him into obedience. ;)

Yes, because an 8 year old on the GOOD SIDE will break into banks 'n shit for cash. Yes. That is SO like Tails. He'll break into places out of curiosity, or to save his friends, but not to STEAL. He's not an ass.

Eggman builds for power and fear. That's why it's big and impressive. But as I stated, Tails can kick his ass with a biplane.

Also, the bold makes no sense at all. You know what the difference between the two is? Hmm?

One is a job. The other is a hobby.

Tails COULD essentially build a giant sky base and use it, but notice a few things.

Tails currently has no robot workers to build things for him.

He has no use for a flying battleship.

He's fucking eight.

Oh, and he can go inside Eggman's bases and tear them from the inside out without trouble.

The point is that, yeah, he hasn't WANTED to really build these things. He has no need or use for them, so why even bother?

Eggman DOES have a use for them, however, if you notice, they're always ruined and demolished by a small blue hedgehog and his friends.

The only thing Eggman broke that Tails was using was the Tornado. And that was from Sonic and Tails being turned around and facing away from the lazorz. They proceeded to destroy said lazor after Tails brought out the newer plane.

Smart =/= Building giant shit.

Say he was bluffing? ;D

Here's how I think of Eggman; He's a genius in some things, an idiot in others, but still a sharp tool. Eggman definitely is great in robotics, AI, coding, decrypting, and weapons of mass destruction, but at the same time he sometimes overlooks the simple things and lets his rage, eagerness, impatience and such get in the way of things like a child. All part of his charm, he isn't just a dictator of course and is a genius, but I wouldn't put him under top teir genius since if he was he'd succeed.

Gerald died since emotion was in the way. He created organic life and a strong being, recreated Chaos from scratch, made healing capsules, the first space station ever, and a weapon capable of destroying the Earth and Moon using a mixture of old and new sciences... However, he was not an evil man, but when the government started using him for weapons, and when his granddaughter Maria, who was the world to him, was killed he snapped, no longer cared to live and in the last moments of his life set-up a system to let the world burn under what he created.

Superhuman Tier - Gerald, Eggman, and Nega. These characters' smarts set them apart. Their feats are beyond normal and even possible.

Genius Tier - The Tails Tier. Don't think anyone else belongs here. Tails has yet to really prove himself though, because he operates lo-tech, and is only eight.

Intelligent Tier - Rouge for being an agent. Wave for knowing mechanics. Merlina for her SatBK plan. Professor Pickle.

Average Tier - Sonic, Blaze, Vector, Amy Rose, Espio, Jet, Marine... characters who may be quick or clever but haven't been shown to be especially perceptive.

Bottom Average Tier - Shadow for being extremely one track and easily manipulated. Knuckles for similar reasons, but slightly more so.

Not Too Bright Tier - Silver for reminding me of Keanu Reeves. Charmy for being a hyperactive airhead. And Cream for just being a simple little girl.

Unsmart Tier - Everyone here is dumb. Big the Cat is only smart at fish. Storm is a "Uh, yes boss" character. All the pirates from SRA, except maybe Johnny.

WAIT A GOSH DARN SECOND THAR!

I'd have to say Eggman Nega and Silver are the best at time-traveling shenanigans as of now. They do it far more frequently by their own means than Eggman does, not to mention that the machine that big egg commandeered for use in White Acropolis wasn't even his invention in the first place - "This is the Solaris prototype. With this machine, I'll be able to control the flow of time itself!".

Come to think of it, Lord Regis worked on that. He just may know the secrets of time travel! Ol' Eggy should've nabbed him along with the princess. He would've had somebody to have a half-decent conversation with, at least.

Oh, and he can go inside Eggman's bases and tear them from the inside out without trouble.

Point by point:

  • WHY does Tails have no robot workers to build things for him? Oh, that's right, because he's not as good a roboticist as Eggman. Have you ever tried controlling the Remote Robot from Tails Adventure? That thing's no silky-smooth ride like Metal Sonic, I tell you what.
  • A flying battleship sure could have been useful in Sky Chase Act 1. There's a reason we call the Tornado a plucky underdog compared to the Egg Carrier: because the Tornado is shit compared to the Egg Carrier and no-one in their right mind would expect it to win. Which it doesn't. See also: Wing Fortress Zone.
  • EXACTLY he's fucking eight. When Albert Einstein was eight he wasn't ranked alongside the leading scientists of his day because d'awwwww he's only little. Yeah, Tails might (MIGHT) get smarter as he grows up, but that possibility shouldn't count NOW.
  • Knuckles can smash up Eggman's bases and tear them from the inside out without trouble. Does that make him as smart as Eggman?

I'd also like to note that Tails didn't even build the Tornado. He just nicked it from Sonic and modded it. :P

Counter-counter points to counter your counter points.

  • Tails needs robots like he needs a fire on his head. He's fine without them and really doesn't need them in day to day life like Eggman does.
  • Tails WOULD have built a battleship if he had known about the Egg Carrier. But he didn't, nobody did, and he didn't really have time. Point is kinda moot. Wing Fortress, Tails was more than likely getting used to the Tornado, and it took him all of a minute to hitch a fucking rocket to the damned thing and meet back up with Sonic. Also Tornado 2/3/whatever is in unleashed took out Eggman's ships quite easily.
  • Tails is already as smart as Eggman. He knows just as much as Eggman does, how he does, I dunno. But he can frequently match Eggman's creations with his own (even if they are smaller) Albert Einstein needed to learn shit before he was famous, Tails already has the knowlege, Einstein is pretty much stupid compared to Tails and Eggman anyways.
  • No, but it just proves the point that there is no need for giant wepaons of death on Sonic and Tails' side. THEY are the weapons of death.

Also the Tornado 1 was lost. Tornados 2 through Unleashed (Tornado... 4? or 3? I dunno) are Tails' creations, and they beat Eggman's easily.

Tails is below Eggman and others for a few reasons. Like you guys said, he's eight. It shouldn't change his position on the scale because of his potential though. Given the supplies like in SRA or Chronicles, he can be very industrious. But mostly I get the idea that he scavenges for parts and builds onto other things. His creations often aren't much bigger than his workshop in a metaphorical sense, because there's still a lot he doesn't know. He can be very naive despite his book smarts. This is probably one reason he looks to Sonic for guidance. He might be as smart as Eggman, but I put him lower on the scale for what he hasn't done yet.

I think the only crash that was his fault was when he forgot the whole "derp this has no landing gear" and didn't have time to transform the plane. After that he was cool with them landings. To the point he could land in shallow water with apparent ease.

Also Tails doesn't fly like a plane you silly.

There's only a Tornado-1, Tornado II, and Tornado III. The Tornado-1 somehow got magically salvaged after its presumed destruction by the Egg Carrier, apparently.

No problem! My Tornado-1 will get us there in a flash. Let's get going!

He refers to it as his plane there, though - so it's safe to assume it's been so heavily modified up to this point that it's pretty much his creation now.

Ranking in similar format to CSS' topic.

My topic? I don't remember making any topics recently...

Anyway...

Supergenius Tier

Gerald Robotnik - the only one who either is equal to, or surpassed Eggman. The guy was capable of making even more destructive biological weapons that are physically capable of bending the time space continuum. One of them was made with help from an outside source, but the one that wasn't still shows how smart the guy was to alter genes and physiologies into weapons capable of taking out entire armed forces. Combine that with the gizoid Emerl that he discovered, the ARK, the Eclipse Cannon, and planning a full scale destruction of a planet 50 years after his death, clearly this guy is quite above Eggman.

Eggman - few can come close to this guy's ingenuity and planning. After all his plans have been ruined, he manages to come back in a short amount of time with an entire full functioning army made from scratch, each as effective as the last. He's either the ultimate survivalist or he has multiple bases across the world that he manages to maintain, and the matter of keeping all these bases a secret from his foes amounts to a good deal of how smart this guy is in his choice of location.

Genius Tier

Tails - one of the few to match Eggman. While he isn't capable of the massive feats Eggman is capable of, you can't really underestimate this kit. Anything he makes from scratch is an effective gadget to help him out, or a fully prepped engine of destruction, and him being 8 years old while performing this kind of stuff puts him way ahead of any adult who is as smart as he is, with the exception of Eggman.

Smart Tier

Rouge - being an agent of GUN certainly would give you resources to know how to handle situations regardless of where you might be, and Rouge is no exception. She isn't capable of building tech herself, but she surely does know how to use it to the fullest of their capablilities. Being a former theif(?) and still a treasure hunter, she clearly has an apt when it comes to infiltrating high security places that are heavily guarded.

Shadow - Being able to manipulate a supergenius like Eggman by not letting him (or the player) know about the planning for Earth's destruction seems like quite a feat for someone to make. Although he himself may have arguably been manipulated by other characters, him knowing full well of the consequences that will come of any of his actions seems to show some maturity as well. His mastery over manipulating time and space, a feat that isn't easy by most characters, shows how well he knows his own abilities at a natural level, and his improvement in making other abilities from that knowledge adds to it. However, he doesn't strategize as much. He's like a railgun, it can hit a single target, but anything in it's way takes some serious damage, so while he's not exactly a reckless character, he's not exactly one to relie much for unleash you need a nuclear powerhouse at your hand.

Average Tier

Sonic - despite him being the main character, he's not exactly the brightest character nor is he the dumbest. He knows about his natrual abilities, even those that he learned on accident. He knows that he needs to stop a threat that's running amok, however, he tends to stop it somewhat recklessly. Despite him being average, he does have some traits that makes him a little smarter than average. His daring nature tends to save his life, such as the instance when he attempted to use Chaos Control in SA2 to teleport from the capsule he was in before he exploded. His knowledge of knowing what to use and when to use it at certain points shows maturity, but he still remains a reckless character who is more than willing to jump off a mountain blindfolded...and live with no scratches.

...

...

I'll have to finish this at another point. These explanations are really taxing.

I think the Tornado 1 is a modified version of the original design. He'd just call it the "Tornado" if it was the same plane. Chances are he rebuilt it using the older design and tweaked it, like, a lot.

The first Tornado seems to have sunk into the ocean though. :(

No way would I consider Vector 'smart'. At all. ;)(that fact probably isn't helped by the fact I've been rewatching the second series of Sonic X lately).

Also after episode 59 (Chaotix go into Space), me and my brother have an in-joke insisting that Vector is a pedo. :lol:Okay, he had totally legit reasons to kidnap Cream and was trying to hit on her mother in doing so, but it's still fun to joke and say he has a lolicon.
