Awoo.

I have a question about reputation.

My reputation is in the negatives, and it seems like it keeps going down one point per day, I don't know why though. I only made one negative thread about Sonic 4, and then went off at a few comments I had received (only because I had a lot of negative things happen to me before I received those comments) and unfortunately it's taken a toll on my rep. I really regret it since I usually act extremely mature, but with the unfortunate happenings at the time, I did some things that I regret, well it seems like I'm talking in circles now, I just want a good rep on this site. I mean, I've even apologized to the people I may have offended... I was just hoping if someone could help me out. I went to the help topic and didn't find anything there...

The only point I need to add to that is that no-one appreciates a whiner. Whine less please.

You will find yourself with a positive number attached to your user account if you simply don't obsess over the damn thing. And if you do care about your rep, don't broadcast that fact, it never helps it stay green. :3

You might have a lot of haters. D:

Pelly does have the same problem I think. But oh well. I guess you need to fight to the top I guess. I hope that helped a bit.

This just blew my mind and made my day. XD

Explanation for slow folks: if Pelly's rep hadn't been directly editted by the admins (or an admin) a while back, it would be around 500+ by now. Pelly is the last person to inspire hate around these parts! XDDD

Compare and contrast with this. See, I told you this rep thing was a load of bollocks. ;D

Alright, thanks.

I know it may be stupid to obsess over but I am extremely self conscious and I have OCD so those don't go well together.

Pretty much this tbh. Although reputation means nothing at the end of the day.

Funny posts and meaningful posts usually generate positive rep whilst angry, annoying and whingey posts will give you neg rep. Although neg rep Nazis will give you negative reputation for simply disagreeing with them, LBP defenders will also give you neg rep if you dare say that LBP is flawed in anyway as well (YEAH I WENT THERE)

Don't take it to heart though, like I said, reputation means nothing, the only people with high rep are mods and oldbies who post alot anyway.

Pelly does have the same problem I think. But oh well. I guess you need to fight to the top I guess. I hope that helped a bit.

Pelly's rep started out at -9001 as a joke, it's now -8700 or something from all the positive rep she gets, Pelly has alot of fanboys she's such a bitch <3

lol silly people. Pelly has a lot of negative rep, because Chris was testing the rep system and didn't change it. Check my rep; do you really think I'm that popular? Haha no.

The rep system is dumb anyway, we've turned this over and over and everyone hates the system - there's just no way to get around it. The administrators/moderators can't go around changing everyone's rep. It's unpractical. Just ignore it, because I know I don't even look at rep! You're fine, a bad rep just means you have douchebags investing into a shitty underhanded system. You're fiiiiine and you'll live.

Why not get rid of the rep then if everyone hates it?

I don't know. Chris has told me why, but I don't know all the technical mumbo-jumbo. There must be no modification for that or somewhat.

I dunno, I like the rep system. I use it mainly to skim through topics and if there is a post with a lot of rep I'll usually end up reading it longer than others. I don't have as much time these days to go through every single post so obviously if a post had a lot of rep it generally means it was either really funny or at least well thought out (even if in the end I disagree with it). I don't use it as a means to judge the person behind the post because we've all said things that others will disagree with, and yes some of the neg-repping is a little silly on certain subjects, but generally I do not find it as flawed as everyone says. A lot of the times I notice rep gets given to posts that break the rules or on subjects that the community is tired of hearing about, which is a good indicator to generally just drop the subject and move on.

So yeah, I like it. Its not hard to get positive repped either you just have to be polite and treat others how you want to be treated really. You be nice to people, they be nice back. When wording arguments or opinions on things too its always kind of a nice thought in the back of the head to avoid getting neg-repped by not getting so worked up over things, though that also just happened over time to me anyway it still helps. Taking opinions and verbally trashing other people because someone feels strongly about something is a good way to get de-repped heh. If everyone is respectful to everyone else there would be no negatives :D...well, at least no negatives that are deserving cause you'll always have that dumb neg-rep or two.

Yeah, but I am as polite as I can be (except for once when I went off for reasons I stated later on that post), and I still have a negative rep. I like to have a positive rep since I'm OCD and can't stand negative things... I have to have everything neat.

Yeah, you're best just to ignore the rep thing. It's like the User Rating on everyones profile, I'm one of the nicest, politest and friendliest members on here(not to toot my own horn) and I had a full 5 star User Rating until nearly a week ago when I was in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 topic where some folks disagreed with me and another members valid oppinion then they started -1 reping our posts and lowered my User Rating so bad that it dropped 1 star to 4 stars. Some people just love to hate for the sake of hating so you're best to just ignore rep and User Rating which I see yours is at 2/5 stars, at the end of the day they're just numbers and icons like the Xbox 360 Gamerscore system and the PS3 Trophy collection system.

I think we should open a casino on the forums and you can gamble rep. Like bet our rep on horse racing or the dogs! Or who will win the arm wrestle contest between T and Svend!

Is there no way to display who rated what on a post?

Well atleast most of you guys hate the rep system. Cubed3 has a terrible rep system and for some reason loads of members there want to keep it =_=

Rep has always really bugged/annoyed me. I'm not completely sure why.

Only admins can see who +/- rated a post. Even mods can't see that info. It does make it easier for people to be cowards and simply down-rep people without explaining WHY they disagree. However, if we COULD all see who down-repped who, I can imagine that it would be bedlam and there'd be SO much infighting on the forums that all conversation would cease and it would just get even more personal.

The system is useful when used well, but falls apart when its abused and used as a way of scoring cheap points without bothering to actually address the offending post. I have pretty good rep so you might expect me to defend the system, but I do think it is fundamentally flawed. The main reason I have such good rep is because I'm a moderator, and I'm fully aware of that.

However, Edge, at the end of the day it is only a silly number. Don't pay it too much heed. Just post more and try to keep calm and level-headed and I'm sure you'll see an improvement. But really, it's nothing worth getting upset over, and if, in the end, it helps you to evaluate how you post and keeps you from losing your cool at other members in future, then maybe... just maybe... it's actually doing its job right after all (;

I've always disagreed with post count and rep/karma. I do not know the logic behind it's creation in the first place other than to somehow 'assure' sad people that the amount of times they've posted is somehow linked to their godliness around the forum, though I totally agree with it's use for reference and use to prevent newbies from using the marketplace. I can see the niceties behind others praising a truly good/funny post but rep/karma can be manipulated by dumbasses so easily (i.e unreasonable fanboys, people who hold grudges against the poster) and at the end of the day, it's little more than another way of enlarging e-penises.

I would actually expect reputation to drop while moderating (and it sometimes has). However this my general impression may be, the SSMB serves as an exception since most members here are mature and desire peace, order and friendliness to at least some degree. Yey! X3

The reputation system was a new feature of Invision Board 3 - a feature that I was intrigued as to how they would implement, but I have heard many others express differing views before seeing it's implementation on many websites. How would it be used? Would it be abused? Is his e-peen really bigger than mine? Really guys?

I don't know. Chris has told me why, but I don't know all the technical mumbo-jumbo. There must be no modification for that or somewhat.

I love the reputation system which is the reason why I've yet to even consider removing it despite the constant "abuse" it gets (to this day I've only ever seen ONE incident of abuse which was taken into account LAST YEAR). I have spent countless hours since our initial upgrade to IPB3 tweaking the system specifically for the users on this forum, taking into account trends I've seen and any instances of trolling; and yes, that means I can access exactly which users provided the positive or negative reputation (you might actually see this as public access in the future, I've heard rumblings of Invision doing such with a future build).

As it stands right now, there is little to no way to deflate a user's reputation through trolling or abuse. Per day, each account can only give two negative points. If you guys somehow find that it's being abused, evidently you've discovered a trend or flaw which I have not and I'd love if you messaged me about it.

At the end of the day, the system is fine. Just because it's not announced doesn't mean it doesn't see the required attention to make sure it is a fair system.

though I totally agree with it's use for reference and use to prevent newbies from using the marketplace.

The reputation system has no association with the marketplace - the limitation for that forum is currently purely post count.

For those of you curious: Aoi's reputation was modified to '9001' and Pelly's was modified to '-9001' to test a feature that to this day I've only half implemented because of time restraints. You might see it finished, but if not you'll see their reputations be restored to what they should rightfully be at this point.

Edit: I'd also like to add that the system can be disabled with the flip of a switch. It's not going anywhere soon, though.

I sort of like the reputation system, myself; I don’t care about it a lot now, but it made me feel all warm and fuzzy and fit-in-y when I got my first couple of points after joining. The crazy people like me! Yaaay!
