Nepenthe 37,087 Posted May 30, 2010 *scoots in* Hai. My name's Nepenthe'. And I like drawing. A lot. After all, what kind of animator-in-training would I be if I didn't? inb4 CG. Anyways, I mostly do pencil and ink pieces but am not above touching that new-fangled thing you youngins call Photoshop from time to time. I also have a few 3D and fine art works that I won't mind showing in the future when I can make my computer reconcile with the digi cam. But with that said-- Mr. Fox says "o hai gaiz!" One of the few pieces I would technically consider finished. I'm thinking of doing commissions over the summer so I need some strong works to lure the people in. This guy represents the "Furry" section of a planned ad. (Larger version) Silver's obviously having an excellent time with the Natal. I dunno why I don't draw this fellow more often; I actually like him. These sketches represent the time period of me and my brother retrieving his car from a shop, having said car die, and him purchasing a new battery and putting it in. I don't like Maximas. Sonic must still be a knave. I'm pretty sure that stance and attack are just completely wrong for a broadsword. A sloppy sketch of my yorkie fan character Aldagar on some tossed-out Kraft paper. Blue Blood 29,585 Posted May 30, 2010 (edited) Oh goodness, your drawings are fantastic. And I know that comment flies about a lot, but your skill far exceeds most. I especially love the detail in the first pic. Edited May 30, 2010 by Blue Blood 1 Nepenthe reacted to this
HunterTSF 1,187 Posted May 30, 2010 woah nelly! Those pics are awesome! The texturing and detailing work of yours is amazing. Particularly liking that first pic of Mr. Fox as well. Very neat stuff! 1 Nepenthe reacted to this
Nepenthe 37,087 Posted June 5, 2010 Thanks for the comments, you two; Any words of encouragement are appreciated muchly, mmhmm. <3 And don't be afraid to criticize my work either, though; I don't bite. I just kinda nibble. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to update, so here's s'more doodle-y things-- Sonic is currently wishing that the player would press 'X'. A little bit of mental spring cleaning; I've wanted to do a SRA/Marine-themed pic for months but put it off because water is also my enemy. Minus a few niggles though, I think it's good enough to ink, don't you? An informal reference sheet for an otter fan character I lazily call Pops; Runs a bar in the run-down Mission District of Central City. Loves good company, hates thugs, loves the shotgun that disperses said thugs. Mrs. Miller, a minor secretary bird character in me and my friend's roleplay universe who has a nasty habit of breaking and entering her agents' homes for a debriefing. After all, we wouldn't want to disturb their sleep, now would we? In a botched mission to nab a suspected kidnapper and terrorist, Aldagar is shot in the shoulder. In the midst of being stitched back together and suffering a team-wide chewing out by commander Detroit, said bear considers their strongman down for the count; Not on this puppy's life! A really quick comic I did in Western Art History to take my mind off the fact that the class was so damn boring. <3 A one-week assignment for my Adobe class; Using Illustrator, we had to create the front and back of any type of playing card we so chose-- The absolutely perfect excuse to trace a fuzzy Werehog. Minus a few niggles though, I think it's good enough to ink, don't you? I have to say, by far, this is your most outstanding work. I like the atmosphere that it brings with the picture. They have their destination set, ready for an adventure. The only thing that bugs me with this picture is how Sonic is sea sick. I don't remember Sonic ever getting sea sick, but everyone can portray the character the way they want to. Overall, your the best Pencil artist on this site. Can I use the pic as an avatar? Nepenthe 37,087 Posted June 5, 2010 He's gotten sea-sick in Sonic X, episode 55, if that even counts. But canon issues aside, I just wanted to have a little fun expressing his aquaphobia. x3;; But I thank you for your thoughts; Yours too, Flyboy! I'll get to work on finishing this little number. Also, you're free to use it as an avatar, A.C. But if it's off-site, a little credit where credit is due? <
Phos 1,093 Posted June 6, 2010 (edited) I found the most memorable part of that episode to be when Chris welded his sub to Sonic's to make like a "Sub Zwei". I still have no idea why he thought to do that making this episode bewildering in a hillarious manner. But regardless, you can't get motion sick underwater, there aren't any waves. That's some impressive detailing on the splash, and a funny picture all around. Edited June 6, 2010 by Phos
Nepenthe 37,087 Posted June 6, 2010 Chris has that whole separation complex with Sonic still going on, remember? xP And you help make my point-- If Sonic managed the impossible of getting seasick underwater, how in the world would he possibly fare on the surface? Nevertheless, thank you for the compliment. <3 Although personally, I have a few reservations with those waves now; Probably me being unnecessarily hard on myself, but maybe I can get them looking more water-y to me once this picture's fully done. CentripetalForce 0 Posted June 17, 2010 Penthe~ Your artwork, is, needless to say, beautiful! I really like your style, it is extremely professional! It looks as though you've had some training or are just an art ninja of some sort.... or both. 0_o I love the expressions the characters have. "way past cool." (lol) My fave has to be the one with Mrs. Miller. that's super cute. ^__^
Phos 1,093 Posted June 18, 2010 If I could offer some advice on making it look more like water, that cusp on the lower right hand side of the splash looks a bit unnatural. It would tend to roll over like a wave. The edge of the void left by the oar will tend to roll inwards to try and fill the empty space. Thanks to hydrogen bonds, water likes to stick together, it tries to have the smallest surface area that it can. Well, I suppose it could form almost a cusp, or at least it's line art could. I found a pretty good example, while I was making sure I wasn't taking crazy pills, it looks like that spray and foam churned up could resemble one, but it's not so sharp. The peaks in the middle are formed by the water crashing together in the center of the void. I also can't help but notice that they color coded their port and starboard rowers. Not sure why. Scar 5,827 Posted September 6, 2010 (edited) Damn I wish I could draw like that. Unfortunately any talent I once had has been drained into abstraction. Literally. Nice to see that artists still work in the standard fine-art style. Once I finish A-level art, I really need to get back into that kind of stuff. NIce work, and by the way, you must either have extraordinary patience and/or free time to do such detailed work, or you're just uber badass and can do that really quickly. In any case its fucking fantastic. I especially like your Sonic drawings, it looks pretty damn awesome, although I think Shadows head could use with a little enlargement . Otherwise perfect.. Nepenthe 37,087 Posted September 6, 2010 Whoa, forgot I had an art topic here. That's the side effect of a bad scanner. Anyways, thanks for the compliments. I appreciate them very much. But Scar, I'm pretty sure you can draw right now. I'd argue it's not so much a talent as it is a skill like any other that you merely build up and maintain over time provided you practice enough. Don't short-change yourself and suggest that you've lost any talent; You've just gotten rusty. There's a big difference, and it happens to the best of us. :3 Also, thanks for the criticism of that Shadow picture. I look at it now and see what you mean. I sometimes lose sight of proportion really badly during short sketches like this (To answer your curiosity, I am indeed a fast drawer ;D), but it's something I've been working on in the meantime. And a belated-thanks to Phos for his criticism as well. Any sort of direct explanation for the logic of free forms like natural elements and clothing is something I crave; Been going through Burne Hogarth's book on drapery and wrinkles like a madwoman. <
Nepenthe 37,087 Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) Ouch, this is very nasty, disgusting, abhorrent bump. 10 months; just horrible. But I'm that crappy artist that gets severe blocks and resultant low self esteem like mad, but here's something that hopefully makes up for it: This is my first finished digital painting, for being such a noob I think I did a pretty good job. Shoes and claws need work and the anatomy is probably a bit janked, but screw it, I worked on and off on this thing for three days. I'm proud. I may eventually do a "making-of" for it. EDIT: Whaddaya know? I did! Something that took considerably less time but which I'm nonetheless proud of. Don't know what in the world Claudio's doing on the 360, but it has to be glorious. Something to round out this bump. This is type of art that pads my periods of inactivity; bad sketches of randomness, usually dogs, because dogs are awesome. Me and a friend got bored and turned our anthro FCs, and Shadow, into feral animals because we're still extremely juvenile like that on a boring night. Nepenthe 37,087 Posted July 13, 2011 Thanks for the comments peeps; they make doing art worthwhile. Despite my insistence that illustrative work is personal hell to me, I'm probably going to do another painting for a friend, this time with two characters! *gasp of awe from the audience.* Updates on that one will probably be posted here soon. Chooch 5,267 Posted July 13, 2011 Your art is so great. I love every piece I've seen you post in here. I'd would honestly want to commission in the future. Nepenthe 37,087 Posted December 4, 2012 My oh my, Jefferson Davis' mama, this is a huge bump. But NGw00dolph dared me to do it with some traditional pieces and I can't possibly pass up a dare that won't get me banned, so here's some semi-recent and recent stuff I've done: My little fan character Aldagar Hunter, the most badass Yorkshire Terrier this side of the galaxy, doing one of the things he does best. And yes, he's been doing archery well before I knew Hawkeye was a thing. Classic Sonic after Generations. He'll get it one day. This is all the result of an impromptu "Animal Week" I did back when I was all bright-eyed and optimistic that I would be able to draw a 10-minute minimum picture every single day as a New Year's Resolution *snrk.* I chose my subjects based on major continents, and let me tell you, Europe has no wild animals that are distinctly European like tigers are to Asia or hyenas are to Africa, so you guys got a pine marten drinking coffee. Deal with it. =P Sorry; Couldn't pass up posting a digital piece because I'm kind of proud of this little thing considering I only did it in about two hours. It was for a GUI a friend was building for a coding class, and she needed an isometric Sonic-y landscape. Considering I've never done isometric landscapes before, I felt well-suited for the job. Lost all my progress late at night too, but what's a little program crash? It's not done or particularly great, but I think it's a charming little thing. inb4 better level design than the modern games. 16 SilentDoom, SnipSnap, LadyBrightcynder and 13 others reacted to this
