Comment of the Week

Cake

Recommended Posts

So, I was browsing around on Kotaku the other day, and I notice that at the end of the week they post a little thread where people who've made specifically amusing or insightful comments have had their comments displayed in a "Comment of the Week" thingamagig.

I know we already have a rep system in place, and I know most people might jump to the argument that we don't want to create a popularity contest here, but I still think it would be a fun idea. Many comments are overlooked throughout the hustle and bustle of life on the SSMB, and I'm sure some posts and posters deserve more recognition for their amusing comments or insightful ideas. It's easy to miss some of the cool stuff, and it'd be pretty sweet if we could set up a little something where comments nominated by enough people for promotion could be showcased.

Granted this isn't a Gawker media forum, I figure I'd toss the idea out to you folks and see if it was worth anything.

But what would be the point? I mean we'd have to have a limit to how many times people could win, or else I'd just plow through any competition.

that and people would be CRAMPING MY MAD WICKED STYLES YO in attempts to be like me and win.

and i don't want to crush dreams here.

A lot of stuff doesn’t necessarily work as a stand-alone quote. Something profoundly awesome or funny might go unnoticed unless you take the posts before and after it into account.

That being said, I wouldn’t be against it. As long as randumb stuff doesn’t win 24/7, then it would be another outlet to point my attention to the stuff that really deserves it.

This is like having a virtual currency for SSMB: No apparent logic; makes forums elitist; and taken into too much consideration for small simple information.

Its not a bad idea, its just that the cons outweigh the pros.

Remember when SSMB actually had a virtual currency? (rings)

actually no

i've been here six years

when the hell did we have rings

I really feel like most comments probably aren't even that funny out of the context of the thread.

I think the rep system is a nice way for people to 'like' a post, trying to find quotes that would be standalone funny and doing a forumwide vote every week seems like it'd be a lot of work.

It's a nice idea in theory but I can't see it in practical use.

I don't think the mods or anyone on the staff (or anyone with some life outside the internet) would agree to check every single post or any comment in order to find one that's funny or clever and post it...

Also:

I don't want this to be implemented becuase I will never win and that would make me cry.

You don't want to hurt Nathan's feelings do you?

Don't remember the exact date, but a few people did have them. It never got out of testing though. I think that roary had them in his profile, Dread might have had them too.

But rings went the same way as the badges, emeralds, smash cards, fluff, haxor forum, moron of the week and the gallary. Back to the 60's from whence it came! I still however have hope for user rep gambling casino!

Watching you scurry around in your mind think you were particularly clever and bright with that last comment has amused me to the point of deciding you're not worth the amount of pain and suffering I could easily cause you without even trying.

Also I made a fuckload of badges for SoniClans back in the day. Both here and after the split, if badges do come back can I do them again it gives me a purpose and I like that.

Agreed.

I also second this statement (about the badges returning) or maybe some achievements, is the kind of thing makes people want to contribute to the site (not saying I will do it, I am a lazy ass).

I just liked the badges that basically showed you participated in events around the site, or you got them over the christmas holiday etc. They were just neat little things like that. I think achievements and stuff would be taking it too far because then we'd have achievement whoring going on haha, especially if there were ever any tied to postcounts.

What's the point if I'm just going to win them all day long. B)

(Nominate this post for comment of the week.)

but it would be weekly

you couldn't win them "all day long"

and seeing as you could only win through a means that is not part of the rule set, it would be cheating and you would be disqualified.

duh.

These were awesome and should seriously come back.

I wish to hear details on Moron of the Week because that sounds like the greatest forum feature ever.

Why don't we just stick to putting amusing quotes we find in our sigs.

Not to mention:

HE'S TOO POWERFUL! THERE IS NO COMEBACK FOR THAT! YOU ARE DONE MAN! GAME OVER!

But I've already been been doing Quote of the week for awhile now. OLOLOLOL

I dunno, I think a topic like this isn't that bad of an idea? ._.

Also the badges were awesome, that is all.

I'm fairly certain it is not "Game Over" as he has not yet lost a single life.

Unfortunately, he only has one, and there are no extras.
