Putting the big wall of text to one side, Sonic #235 is being shipped today so hopefully we will hear soon if someone has the comic, and if so we will know if Antoine is dead or simply in a coma. I don't have anything against Antoine but I'm really hoping he does die. It'll give the comic more life than it has in the last few years.

I'm hoping that was intentional.

On one hand, I'd miss Antoine. On the other, well, if he was Killed Off for Real, it would be interesting to see the effects it would have on the cast. Especially Sonic...it's interesting to see him beginning to lose his cool.

I'm really interested to see if Sonic will snap soon will all this going on. If Antoine does die, that could be what pushes him over the edge. I also sort of want to see him in a situation where he feels in the blame that he wasn't able to stop Eggman soon enough and finish the job (partly because he was too busy playing with Silver Sonic), either through his own realisation or through other people pointing the finger of blame.

We rarely get to see Sonic out of his comfort zone so this story is a great time for his character.

Bit late... but i was busy doing other things...

A review of archie comics issue 234 by... oh fuck it, all what anyone cares about is Antoine’s death so lets talk about that instead.

You know, lets summarise issue 234 quickly so we can move onto the only interesting thing that people are talking about.

Issue 234 is great, lots of action, everyone is doing something, good dialogue and good character interaction blah blah blah. I have however 3 complaints.

1: In the whose who section, is it really necessary to include a ??? character?

2: The death egg has been hiding... really... can you think of a cheaper reason for why nobody has been doing anything about it for the last... what 3 months?

3: The reaction from some people to it.

The biggest OMG WTF Dogs & Cats moment in issue 234 is... Antoine dies! Well... actually... Antoine might have died, we don’t know yet. Now some people, people who thought the only good and sensible response was to set up protest groups on a website designed to show off drawings (seriously how on earth does that make any sense?) to complain about everything in the issue as it dared to ‘CHANGE THINGS!’ made a number of claims that I think it’s time to look at.

After being yelled at for the best part of a day as to why it was so dark and totally not what people wanted I was expecting this issue to be up there with Preacher or The Darkness in terms of what happened... so imagine my surprise when I turned to the page in question and the most stressful and disturbing thing about the whole issue was the fact I nearly spilt coffee on it.

Antoines death was not a dark or moody thing at all... if anything it was epic and a bloody awesome send off to a character that was having one hell of a FUCK YEAH ride over the last few issues.

Lets be honest here, Antoine was one of the best characters in the Genesis Saga, he had one hell of an awesome courtroom battle in the previous issue, and now he goes out in the middle of a fight after taking on a Metal Sonic and practically yelling FOR KING AND COUNTRY! As he meets his end.

Will someone explain to me how this was a bad thing?

If a comic book character has to die, you had better make it the most bad ass ending to that characters life you can.

Take the death of Super Girl for instance.

Super girl is locked into a fight with... well... for ease of discussion, a death bringing god that intends to destroy everything, almost every character in the DC universe was involved in this story, Super girl erupts onto this being (now in human form) she utterly lays into him destroying his human body, she only dies from a lucky shot from this monster, but she hurts him enough to make him retreat... She dies saving the world!

That... that was awesome! She dies in the middle of an epic fight, nearly destroys a god in the process, and saves the world!

What bigger/better way could she have gone out? What better way for her fans to remember her by?

Let’s look at another big death in comics.

Doctor Octopus (well at one point he died).

Doctor Octopus is locked into a fight with a powerful monster dude named Kaine. Kaine says from the outset that he intends to kill Doc Oc. You think Doc Oc just lets him? Fuck no! What follows is one hell of an intense fight, Doc Oc even lands several awesome blows on this guy, however he ultimately falls to Kaine. But my god, what an epic fight, Doc Oc shows just why Spiderman took him as a serious threat and why Doc Oc lasted for decades in the marvel universe, for a death, this was one hell of a fight, Doc Oc went out on a high.... before coming back a few years later...

Now lets look at an ending that’s far darker than Antiones... but ultimately... completely crap.

Johnny Lightfoot.

What’s this! A character in a Sonic comic dying! OH THE HUMANITY! Johnny Lightfoot had been in Sonic the Comic since near issue 1, he had been in almost every issue and at one point had his own mini series, he was a popular character.

Now in the Sonic Adventure saga, to show how evil and powerful chaos was, he kills Johnny... and the death is kinda lame. Johnny is attempting to plug something in and is subsequently punched by chaos; it’s a very quick and very cheap death.

There’s no epic ‘FOR THE GLORY!’ battle, heck there’s not even a ‘well I’m not going down without a fight’ kind of line... it’s a punch, and he’s dead... Yes it’s a very dark death. Everyone including Johnny is terrified thanks to Chaos’ fear effect, they’re fighting on a dirty street against Chaos, but despite how much darker it is than Antoine... it’s quick and cheap. Even Nigel Kitching said he just wanted a way to kill off the character.

I said it in the last big post I made about archie that, I like Antoine, he was becoming my most favourite character in the comic and if that was his last outing good on him! That was one hell of a battle and one hell of a way to go out.

In fact, if he does come back, because what the people complaining fail to realise so far... is that it’s not confirmed that he’s actually dead yet, and princess sally recently maxed out her death loyalty card to Antoine is certainly able to get at least one stamp on his. It pretty much dooms him for all time, he’s never going to have a moment like this again, this was his epic way out of the comic. If he comes back now, nothing else he’ll do will every quite be as epic as wrestling a Metal Sonic before dragging it away only for it to self destruct...

The only way his ending could have been even more epic would be if he had this as his dying line....

Dare I suggest... maybe he should remain dead? Else he be the next Shadow in terms of ‘meh... so what...’

Was his ending a dark thing... erm... no... The Beano had darker moments when the Bash Street Kids went through their design change. It's not a dark thing at all, the darkest thing in that issue is a close up of Eggmans teeth. So that’s all I have to say on the matter...

Oh except one more thing... Robot Sally is fifty billion times more interesting and useful than Sally ‘I’m not a policeman I’m a princess’ acorn ever was.

What is your take on the whole Archieverse? Do you like how the comic has evolved from a mishmash of TV/game continuities? Or would you prefer a reboot?

While digging around the Penders forum on the search for movie stuff, I came across a thread about the Archie blog. In it is a quote I think is pretty interesting in regards to the communication between Archie in the early days and SEGA.

The quote is in response to someone asking why Mori and Jerry (two random guys who were dubbed as creating Sonic in Sonic Live) were used and not any actual SEGA staff;

At the time SONIC LIVE was originally pitched, the last third of the story was supposed to take place at the actual SEGA of America HQ, featuring actual Sega personnel interacting with their mascot during a battle against Dr. Robotnik. The problem with going forward with this aspect of the story had more to do with production logistics, as most the panels on these pages would be mostly photographs layered with art and word balloons. The first problem was actually getting to the west coast in order to take the pictures. The second was getting everyone involved to go along with the plan. SONIC LIVE was initially proposed late in the first quarter of 1994 and didn't end up published until late in 1997, so that ought to give you some idea of the gestation process for this baby.

One other thing, Mori and Jerry ended up representing both the Japanese and American personnel from the company, and have no real life counterparts. At the time they were created, I had yet to hear the name Yuji Naka. Nor had I ever heard the name Naoto Ohshima during the entire time I submitted stories to the series. That's how little we were ever told about Sonic's origins within the company at the time.

Trust me, the rest of the events are still pretty heated, not least with Bunnie leaving the hospital after saying "Never again. Ah've lost you. Ah've lost Sally, but I refuse to lose anybody else. Ah know what Ah gotta do to protect everyone. To make things right. Wait for me, Sugah-Twan. And please forgive me for what Ah gotta do."

I mayyyy have gave a sigh of relief for Antione.This many years of the comic running and I still don't think I'm ready to let the poor guy go T_T However, Nicole's situation keeps getting worse, heck, everything's pretty much going to crap, so I like the bit of dark/dreary tension, it's a nice change, for a while of course

Well, Bunnie's the traitor then. I never really considered Sally the traitor, she wasn't properly roboticized of her own free will. If I'm right however, Bunnie's likely going to her Uncle to be a cyborg again.
