MINECART RETURNS! (Japanese Site Update)

HOLY SHIT THOSE GRAPHICS LOOK REALLY GOOD! It never seemed to look that good in Splash Hill.

Probably because of that AWFUL background and shiny grass.

Shiny grass is tolerable, but rather boring and you miss all the detail as a result of it. Just at the small bit of grass on the right. But that BG is hideous. The first layer is fine, but the next two are just plain bad. The islands right at the back in the water also look out of place cause of their colour. And then LLZ is so very pretty, it's funny.

Playing Eagle Eyes again (I miss the SASASR days...), did anybody spot the supposed Eggman Empire symbol on the TNT?

I don't see it.

Awful, really? I think Splash Hill Zone still looks nice. Sure this zone looks better, but I think Slash Hill is great looking too.

It feels like Green Hill Zone yet is different enough to not feel like a complete copy. In fact the only zone that really feels like a complete copy to me is Casino Street. Which is why I assume they skipped showing that and went straight to zone 3. Anyway all the other zones take obvious inspiration from levels in Sonic 1 and 2, but I think they feel different enough to not feel like a complete retread. I do hope future episodes come up with completely unique themes however.

Nice to see new updates on the new Zone & Badniks now =], LLZ looks fantastic and really fun glad they changed act 2 like they said they would :). I'm looking forward to hearing some more infomation tomorrow on the SEGA blog too so I'll be expecting the SEGA Forums,Sonic Retro Forums & SSMB to explode...*steals Black Spy's image for example*

Yes, awful. It's the BG that does it. It looks nice when you're not just staring at a wall of blurry greenish-blue with some massive chucks of brown checkers.

Means nothing. There are plenty of screen-wide areas where you can't see boosters. Think nothing of it until you see footage. I'm gonna join you in the finger crossing though, cause at any rate I didn't expect LLZ2 to receive this kind of awesome change.

*crosses fingers*

I feel I should point out for people who are worrying about Splash Hill looking bad compared to this new level. Remember that these shots are from the new build and Splash Hill is from the older build. There's every chance that with the new improvements here I'm sure they went back to Splash Hill and fixed it up too.

Also the ball is awesome, what a hold over from Sonic 1 to bring back! : ) This update makes me FAR more excited than any of the hype stuff from before, so taking that as a good sign!

Level art updates? I'd be surprised, especially considering the LLZ art hasn't changed since the leaks.

+1 rep, I too am sure they'll have edited Splash Hill up too. SEGA said the E3 demo only had a couple of the changes in place, so it's possible things in Splash Hill could be modified as much as Lost Labyrinth Zone. Hopefully it has less boosters and springs now. The vines I'm fine with, I got used to them after a short time at SoS.

Truth be told, SHZ was very nice layout wise. It just needed fewer boosters, springs and the removal of pits in act 3. And fixing up Sonic's behaviour wouldn't go a miss either. It's the BG art that bugs me, and it's only an issue at certain parts.

As much as I'm really liking the level, I have a bone to pick right here:

That spring needn't be there, it just takes control away from the player. They should have to jump on the ledge, avoid the spear and jump up to the next platform. Everything else is looking lovely though.

Extremely minor spoiler:

If you look at the leaked videos you'll see that the spring isn't just sitting there, its hidden beneath a pile of rocks which you can either using your homing attack (possibly spindash too) to break or you could jump onto the above ledge with the spear. So the player is in control here.

Really? I thought that the next to last zone looks an awful lot like Metropolis Zone. Of course it may be pretty different, I just saw act 3 which looked identical to Sonic 2's. Of course, this is the original version so I guess we'll just have to wait to see.

leaked video

That's nice and all, but even though this stage has been officially revealed now I still don't think we're supposed to post anything that leaked. You might want to edit before you're chewed out.

Generally, I like video showed an example to show that in addition to the torch in the game nothing has changed.

Anyone else notice that the SHZ bg (Not the wallpaper) on the Japanese site looks a bit different than in the game?

First, it's against this forum rules to post leaked videos or content from leaked game.

Second, that's simply not true. The 2nd act was completely redone, the Orbinauts were edited to look more mechanical, and though cannot judge until the video is released to see level design or physics tweaks, neither can you say they've changed nothing since you haven't seen a new build video either.

Your... like video showed an example of how the addition of the torch changes nothing...?

Mwahahaha, RUINED Labrynth Zone! Whose laughing now Labrynth Zone, WHO'S LAUGHING NOW? *sob*

(Looks surprisingly good considering how much grief that place has given me in the past)

Because the cloudsand water art stock art and the island were ripped from a screenshot of act 3.
