Jet the Hawk opinion topic

We have Silver and Blaze topics and I was thinking all of these characters that Sonic Team seem to push on us should have their own topic like these. Sorry if it's a bad topic.

At first I thought Jet was never going to be seen again then I thought he would be exclusive to the Riders series with the sequel, but then when he appeared in Smash Bros Brawl as a trophy while characters like Rouge and Metal Sonic only got stickers, and then next thing you know

he's in Black Knight over Rouge and Metal Sonic!

So it seems Sonic Team have plans to keep Jet around. But I was thinking about it and really Jet's a great character. I don't care much for those other two rogues (I personally find Storm unnessasary) but I think that Jet is actually needed in the series. Sonic's had a lot of rivals like Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, Silver. But one by one they all became heroes or were tricked into being the villian... okay only Shadow was a true villian to begin with... sort of. Metal Sonic was also a good rival but he's more like Eggman's lackey. Jet however isn't really a hero, I know he's not as villianous as he could be, but still he's a great rival for Sonic. Sonic just needs one of those rivals and needs to have them stick around and stay a rival without becoming a frienemy. So Jet rivals Sonic in speed and can also be taunting unlike Metal Sonic who usually acts like a mindless robot and when he's given speech he's too powerful (he was great in Pinball Party though), that's the other thing Jet isn't super powerful, he's not that big of a threat which I think is what it needs to be like. FOr instance in the Archie comics, Sonic's rival is Scourge but Scourge is very powerful and threatening and becomes a real decent villian like Eggman. So basically I think Sonic needs a staple villian who can't overthrow the true villian (usually Eggman) yet is a great and taunting rival, and I think this is perfect for Jet. Now let's just hope SEGA doesn't make him to friendly and ruin him, because the ending of the Riders games have me a bit concerned. If he does end up becoming another friend-rival a la Knuckles and Shadow, then I think he's a waste of character.

But if there's any other reason to like Jet, it's his voice. I always get good laugh out of Griffith doing an Urkel impression... it was even better with Darkspine Sonic.

^ Its too late for that, sorry. He's definitely in M&S at the Winter Olympics (he was planned in the original), and he was in Black Knight, plus I've heard he had a small cameo in Secret Rings on a hammock. And yeah, he also had a trophy in Brawl when Metal Sonic or Rouge didn't get one.

Frankly, I quite like Jet. The only thing I dislike about him is his voice, but even then it isn't so bad. I'm glad he's being used more often. Though I figured it was pretty much guaranteed that he would. (Here's expecting Jet and the Rogues to appear in Chronicles 2.)

He's a damned retard.

What's so special about a bird who needs a hoverboard to fly over a hedgehog who only needs his feet to move? Jet's ego and idiotic self-righteousness is ill-placed; it's kind of like somebody in a wheelchair boasting that he's better than somebody who can walk just because his chair is electric-powered. This is nothing to boast about. You're a fucking bird - fly, damn it.

Jet's mentally deranged.

Mmm... I think its implied that the Babylonians couldn't actually fly, despite having wings, due to certain circumstances. They ended creating the Extreme Gear so they COULD fly. Its largely indicated in Sonic Riders that this was the case. Won't comment on your opinions, though; everyone has their own opinions, after all.

I'm not fond of Jet.

Sure he's one of the very few green coloured characters (<3) but there's something I just don't like about him. One of them is his uncalled for arrogance. I can't help but roll my eyes whenever he uses Extreme Gear boarding as a means to gauge one's speed and uses the title of 'Fastest thing in the universe' as a prize for winning a competition on AIRBOARDS.

Also, you gotta call his so called prestigious skill and title of 'Legendary Windmaster' into question when positive newbie(s) can apparently easily out-do him. I was expecting really really impressive skill out of Jet going by the plaudits apparently placed upon him but it didn't really come to be. The only reason he won the first Ex World Grand Prix and got one over on Sonic was purely due to cheating.

And about his voice. I've never understood why people think he sounds like Darkspine. Darkspine sounds outright vicious and speaks in a way that suggests he's uttering his words as forcibly as possible whilst Jet sounds outright nasally and tauntingly in a slippery tone. There are perceptible similarities because Jason uses a very distinctive tone but they are vastly characteristically different.

Yeah, I think the Babylonians were punished some sort of gods or something, so mabye their flightlessness could come from that.

To be honest I haven't experienced Jet so I just know what I have saw from clips on youtube etc. I don't like his attitude, there is only one arrogant person I can deal with and that is Sonic. Jet is just... very irritating and tries my patience.

I don't mind Jet. I think his lazy, immature, irresponsible, needlessly arrogant attitude are part of his charm... Though I think I'd prefer it if his speed was solely from his Extreme Gear rather than on his feet, though I think, if he's in M&SatWOG (which he probably is), he'll be made to run line any other speedster, sorta like how Silver was slow in '06 and almost as fast as the speedsters in the Rivals series. It's not a biggie, I just think it'd be nicer, 'cause it could make him for a good "arrogant rival who really can't compare to the main character at all"... It's kinda like that already, but it'd be like adding insult to injury if his speed only came from an air-board.

But Jet is the only character I'd consider to be Sonic's 'rival' in the true sense of the word:

Sonic and Knuckles argue. And they fight. But I don't know if I'd consider them rivals; their fights are, and have always been, usually caused by either Knuckles being tricked into thinking Sonic's doing something wrong, or Sonic provoking Knuckles' temper. They did have the whole "Red vs. Blue, Power vs. Speed" thing going on, but I'm not sure if they ever sought to rival each other as much as their abilities just countered each other whilst they fought for their other reasons.

Shadow is like Sonic's 'doppleganger' in terms of abilities, but, as with Knuckles, I don't really think they seek each other to prove one is better than the other necessarily. They may have had a rivalry in SA2 because of the whole "faker" thing, but outside of that game, they haven't been rivals. They fight due to a clash of principles and priorities, and Shadow will fight anyone who gets in the way of his goals, Sonic or otherwise.

Silver and Blaze... I've never considered either of them to ever have been Sonic's rivals. They were against him at first, for reasons of "He's the Iblis Trigger!" and "I don't need his help!", respectively, but neither of them have shown any hints of trying to rival him. Silver is in the Rivals series, but that's just him wanting to get his business done before Sonic/anyone else... just like all of the characters in that game.

So, yeah, I think Jet's Sonic's only true 'rival' in the sense of wanting to compete to prove who's better, even if Jet isn't quite up to the same standards of ability as Sonic.

But that's what Metal Sonic is all about. And before you say that Metal is a mindless drone who only do what Eggman tells him to do except when he gained a higher intellect in Heroes, remember that in that game he says the he started upgrading himself BECAUSE he was tired of loosing to Sonic and wanted to beat him once and for all: This means his desire to defeat Sonic was there even before his intellectual and physical upgrade in the game, and is probably still there now even after having the upgrade reversed.

Its not so much Jet sounding like Darkspine, but Darkspine sounding like Jet. Jet was created before Darkspine, y'know.

As far as Darkspine Sonic goes, its primarily in the battle itself where he sounds like Jet. Purely, exactly like Jet. In the cutscene he sounds far better, though.

Next, about Sonic's rivals, I kinda agree with Jet being a "true rival" of Sonic, but I disagree on Shadow. He quite often tries to show his superiority to Sonic. There are two... no, make that one game I can name in which he doesn't, and that's Sonic '06. Even in Sonic Heroes (which I admittedly did call into question based on Shadow's memory problems) does Shadow try and prove his superiority to Sonic in.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow is constantly trying to prove himself over Sonic depending on what path you take, but its not hard for it to happen. The Pure Hero, Dark Ending is also based entirely around a Sonic-Shadow rivalry.

Shadow and Sonic are at ends with each other often in Sonic Battle. Sonic Rivals and Rivals 2, everyone's constantly fighting, anyway, including Shadow. Sonic Chronicles, as well, showcases Sonic and Shadow fighting a few times, trying to prove themselves over one another.

There's even some missions in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games where Sonic and Shadow are competing. Sonic and the Black Knight, though depicting an alternate version of Shadow (Lancelot), even has them competing, too.

So, yeah, there is quite a bit between Shadow and Sonic. I do agree that Sonic doesn't have much rivalry with the others, though, but they are rivals to some small extent, at least. In the case of Silver, I frankly see him as a closer rival to Shadow than anyone else.

For me, there's not much to like about Jet. I agree with Indigo's assertion that his personality is a more exaggerated version of some of Sonic's least faltering traits - the cockiness, confidence, etc. Past that, I really don't see much else to him, save that every single time I look at him I have pictures of Scratch from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog popping up in my head.

For that last reason, I usually imagine him breaking out into that annoying chuckle or something.

Also, I'm not quite sure what the guy and his crew of savoury buffalo wing morsels-in-training would end up doing in a regular Sonic title or side story sans their boards. Maybe as a featured unlockable character in a multiplayer mode, but I don't know where else he'd apply.

I like Jet. I can't really give any firm basis of WHY but meh. I don't feel that I need to.

I will say though that his ego is terribly misplaced. Not only can Sonic beat him on foot but on the extreme gear as well.

Don't really have an opinion on him, since I haven't played the games he appeared in (I'm not counting his Black Knight appearance since it's more of a cameo). I saw some clips of him, and his voice is pretty grating, but I haven't really seen anything special about him. I don't really mind the whole jet-board thing, even though it just proves that he isn't on the same level as Sonic in terms of speed (I'd say the same about Johnny from Rush Adventure, who rode a water bike and cheated in races). From what I'm reading, I'm guessing he is a lot like Johnny from Rush Adventure, right?

I think Jet's an awesome character, one of the best the series has introduced since the Dreamcast died, IMO. Pretty much for every reason the OP said; Sonic hasn't had a real friendly rival since Knuckles and Shadow almost completely went out of character. Jet fills that niche extremely well. Frankly, I couldn't care less about his voice. Or any of the character's voices for that matter. The only time I care about their voices is when it hurts their character, as is the case with Silver and Omega in Sonic 06.

As for the other Rogues, I also think Wave is very good as well for a similar reason: she gives Tails the rival he's never had. Sonic Riders is the first time I actually saw him seem genuinely angry. Plus, she and Jet make a good comic duo; she's the real brains but he refuses to see it that way.

Storm, however, I think is just pure filler. Knuckles doesn't need to be in Rider's story so Storm doesn't need to be there either. I'll admit I thought the "suck" scene was funny, albeit a bit drawn out as well as the part where he chases Amy in ZG. Otherwise, Storm just seems like a pointless brute for the most part.

I'm quite fond of him, suprisingly for a lot of the reasons people don't like him. Something to keep in mind is that the cutscenes of the Riders games were very comical and silly compared to the super-serious kind some other games were going for, and Jets rather silly voice fits in to that slapstick style of storytelling perfectly - although I can understand how such a voice can be grating, I've just never heard it as such.

I don't have anything against him having an completely unwarranted ego either, it just adds "fuel to the fire" when it comes to getting under Sonics fur and making the player more eager to take him down. But yes, being very arrogant and having Sonic's attitude with the volume up to 11 is his character trait, I'd rather have that then something completely lacking in character that just races in the 'spirit of competition' and nothing else...or a brainless brute. (As already mentioned :P )

*slaps forehead* I'm a doofus. How could I forget Metal?

You're right, he is all about proving superiority over Sonic... But come to think of it... Would he stop there? I'm guessing Metal feeling that he is better than Sonic would ultimately result in the death of our hero, whereas Jet just wants to prove he's the fastest on Extreme Gear, same with Johnny in water. Maybe it's like Jet is the friendly rival and Metal's the not-so-friendly rival.

As for his AI, his wanting to have one over on Sonic was certainly there in Heroes and before, but I think his AI was regressed so much in Rivals that he was simply a communication device for Eggman

Nega

... I may be wrong, as I haven't played the games, myself, but I think that's how it went... Wonder where they're gonna atke him from here...

Next, about Sonic's rivals, I kinda agree with Jet being a "true rival" of Sonic, but I disagree on Shadow. He quite often tries to show his superiority to Sonic. I always thought a lot of those fights were from a clash of ambition more than rivalry, like in Battle Shadow didn't want Sonic to have Emerl, and in Black Knight he was ordered to slay him on sight... then again,

Lancelot Returns...

. Gah, I need to play the games more often, my mind's becoming stagnant.

That is something i agree on, i mean. Haven´t you seen the cutscene in the beggining (sorry for bad spelling  ), in the part where the "shooting star" comes and his wish is "Please let me beat him just once" ( i think the line was like that...sorta), now, for me that did it. It made me realize the fact that Jet not only is his rival he wants to be his rival, making him sort of obsessed into beatig Sonic, for me...that´s showing how much he wants to beat him IMO. So i truly think Jet could be his true rival (wether Sonic ´s on his feet and Jet ´s on his extreme gear), just as long as SEGA doesn´t ruin him...

Jet is pretty much my favourite character, since at the time I felt he had a lot of the personality traits I wanted to be in Sonic that Sonic just didn't...have (super power of teamwork anyone?). I also like his design, and the fact that he kind of even looks like he was made to mirror Sonic (green in color, blue eyes, whereas Sonic is the opposite).

I just find the fact that he is arrogant, full of himself, and even lazy to be likeable. He has his flaws, but its been shown he is still a good guy at heart. Like I said, just parts of him were traits that I wished Sonic had at the time and so I took a liking to him =)
