So how is this game, again?

Recommended Posts

I say your opinion on this game will most likely be based upon how much stock you put into a Sonic 4 before this game was announced. If you were like me and didn't give a shit if they made one or not, then you'll enjoy this game for being a fun and enjoyable experience that really feels very classic.

However, if you were one of the ones who have been demanding for this game or were expecting a LOT out of it, you might wanna stay away, though it sways on either a very wary recommendation, or an addition to your "games to never buy" list, based upon what exactly you will or won't let a Sonic 4 get away with. If your really big on the physics thing, chances are, this is gonna be one to avoid. As a game itself, if you don't mind spending 15 bucks on a game you'll only be able to barely squeeze anymore than 5 hours out of, then go for it.

But one thing though, do NOT let the people complaining about the physics get to you.

I thought it was alright, not nearly as good as the classics and not deserving of the title Sonic 4 though IMO. Too many things that bother me for it to live up to the classics.

-Bad physics

-Rehashed level themes

-Rehashed bosses

-Regressed back to Sonic 1 in many ways where I feel it should have built off of S3&K instead (story scenes, mid level bosses, level transitions, etc.) Felt more like they wanted to tickle nostalgia bones then make an actual follow up to S3&K. That was most likely what they did want to do, but as someone who wanted a follow up to S3&K (not Sonic 2.5) I was pretty disappointed.

So yeah, still pretty good, but also pretty disappointing to me personally.

Its actually kind of funny, because for all the time people spent complaining about the "hold right to win" nature of the series, holding a directional input should be second nature by now.

I used to play Sonic games like that. Glitches in Sonic 2 and 3 conditioned me otherwise, and about 5 minutes of the bullshit level design that Sonic Advance 3 had swore me off doing so entirely (with the exception of whenever I dig out Sonic Advance 2).

So basically, don't use the Spin Dash at all and you'll be fine!

I am a huge spin dash player when I don't have the boost in any Sonic game. Rolling has always been fun to me. But I think I can manage if they didn't gimp his speed.

Thanks everybody for your comments. I just don't want to spend 15 bucks on a letdown.

My exact feelings...

I Couldn't even bother to finish this game. I played the classics WAY to much the physics problems were like restrictions put against me. What to accelerate with spindash? Too bad! *Jump dashes for more speed and flings himself into an enemy*. Want to spin dash off of those pesky ledges in lost labyrinth? *spin dashes and falls straight down...* Its frustrating I can't do anything anymore! I could even do these things in the advance series. This game feels like a step back. 15 is way too much. to ask for too. If you are itching for a sonic game though you can try this. I enjoyed this game on one point and one point only...It was one of the few sonic games where I did not know exactly what was going to come up next. It was exciting but it suffered from all of those physics problems. Casino night was shit too especially since I played sonic 3 carnival night the night before the cannons owned me like a B****. This is sonic pocket adventure 2 to me. Classic rehashed stages but with the modern styles of sonic and eggman. It was more disappointing but nowhere near bad.

Now that's a game I'd like to see.

Sonic Pocket Adventure was awesome.

Sonic Pocket Adventure was awesome.

This I can agree with! I loved the remixed tunes and simple gameplay. This game has the pocket adventure vibe more than the classic vibe. I never though sonic 4 would be a nostalgia gimmick. All it had people saying was "oh I remember that" "this was in sonic 1".

I'm starting to think Sonic Advance 1 was more Sonic 4 than Sonic 4 I don't know why. ;o

Look at this! wasn't this uber? listen to the music and look at Eggman wow, not to mention Tails. Still advance was not perfect.

Anyway, its the first episode of Sonic 4, we can only wait and see.

PS. Sonic's new walking cycle really bugs me for some reason, this walking cycle started in Sonic Advance 2. He just looks awkward walking upright like hes some kind of proud soldier, it just makes him slower, he used to start up jogging like in the classic games getting ready to blast off, but now he Walks first then Jogs then Runs.

------------

Look at his jogging/running animation in the past Sonic Advance 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64fIlOVv510

Why did they added him a walking cycle after Sonic Advance 1? I understand in 3D but in 2D too? What is your opinion about his walking cycle in newer games after Sonic Advance 2? Like it or Hate it?

:)

Bottom Line: I'm very happy with sonic 4 because although its not as original there is still hope for future episodes and although its not perfect it brought back many things missing from games like Sonic Advance or Sonic rush! :)

Hmm, thats no good, a Gameboy game playing better than a next gen game? I think too many crucial programmers and directors left Sonic Team. :/

or maybe they were too busy on Sonic Colors! make one game at a time Sonic Team! geesh. :P

The problem: The physics suck.

The solution: Hold right.

Conclusion: Hey, this game is fun now.

Once you adjust to the hold-right mentality, this game is really fun, and probably Dimps's best work in terms of level design and style. Just by playing this game like I would play Sonic 1 back in the mid-nineties, by focusing on holding right during the running and leaping stretches, then slowing down for the platforming, I found exactly zero physics problems in my playthrough, which is a much smaller number than "this game is broken"-teen. Yes, Sonic had momentum back in the Genesis games so he wouldn't drop out of the air if you let go of the stick during a leap, but I can't think of a single player back then who'd do so.

If you want to find flaws in this game, then you don't have to try hard. Why, half the internet has already done the job for you. But if you want a fun Sonic game, then it's right there in front of you, so why ruin your shiny new toy by picking it apart? It's hard to put it back together once you focus entirely on the flaws.

Actually, I relied on momentum. Jumping onto a platform, once I knew I had the right amount of steam, I'd just let go of the controller so Sonic would stop when he landed. I tried that in Sonic 4, and that's when I noticed that whole issue.

Also the last damn minecart. What the fuck dimps.

ALSO SUPER SONIC. He's just one huge physics glitch. In an awesome way though. Fuck standing on walls, I'm walking slowly up walls, mother fucker. Time to bust out a spindash while I'm on here, then homing attack something halfway across the stage, bitches!

That's actually kinda funny. I'm told the pre-delay version of that level was one long minecart nightmare. At least in the final version there's only one portion where failing to jump will kill you.

Actually, that's the one part of this game that really annoyed me. Every single level has a really cheap peril right before the goal. It's either a bottomless pit, lots of crushers, or naughtily placed enemies, just to make sure you'll lose the rings necessary to enter the special stage. And of course there's hardly ever 50 rings available past the last checkpoint. Ironic that Mad Gear act 3's final trick is the least likely to kill you of the lot. Guess they thought they'd ease up before the finale. Like those five 10-ring boxes right before the goal in Starlight Zone act 2.

Oh, and thanks for the heads-up that swearing is okay in this forum. I'm never sure about that one.

All of the minecart sections in the final build of the game require no input at all. You can jump to avoid some gaps, but there's never a bottomless pit until Sonic is out of the cart. BUT not holding right as you fly through the air afterwards will kill you. You get killed for for not holing the d-pad/analogue stick during an auto control section. Hm. Kinda like Wave Ocean in a round-about way.

I'm talking about the ending, where you're launched out and flying. You don't hold right and you just fall straight down into the pit. It's pretty fucked up.

Man nobody gives a flying fuck in a cock blender if you fuckin' drop the f-bomb all the fuck over every-fucking-where as long as you're not a fucking assfuck about the fucking shit man.
