Tomb Raider - Out 05/03/2013 for X360/PS3/PC

I like what I have seen. The fact that it does not really play like the old games does not really bother me since I am more adaptive (or accepeting) to change than others. I mean as long as the game plays well its cool with me. Pretty much the same stance I have with the DmC reboot. One thing I did notice is that they are really out to make Lara get hurt as much as possible heh. Does not really bother me at all. But man does she suffer! Shit.

I think I might rent and play this (and DmC, but others seem to have done it for me) just to see the whole picture here going by the person who's writing this game's plot.

Torture porn or not, and I don't care what the fuck the character's gender is, that scene that sparked the last discussion was unsettling and horrific. But I hate judging something with little information, so I'm gonna have to suck it up and look into this game if I want to criticize it any more than I've already done (which I don't think is very much, TBH).

Worse yet, if the game sells well, we'll get sequels in the same canon. If it sells badly, we won't get any sequels. Either way, the old Lara won't be back for a very long time, if ever, and THAT freaking bugs me.

See also: Samus Aran.

My face is sad.

First Review by NGmaster, Embargo lifts on 25th so expect more reviews to come next week

Edit: Oh shit, just saw "Unbiased Reviews" on the magazine cover.

LMFAO

Hey Yank Gamemaster is a pretty good British Game magazine I trust their reviews over most of the other Game Magazines that tend to be biased to a particular console.wink.png

As much as I enjoy the ruthless grave robbing Mute Butler Freezing Lara Croft from my youth. I am still looking forward to this game and this portrayal  I hope their are some Tombs to raid with lots of jumping and puzzles.

To tell you the truth I haven't been this excited for a Tomb Raider game since the 90's.

Tomb Raider? Lara Croft that looks like Lara Croft? Check.

She does not look like Lara Croft at all.

HER EYES ARE BLUE!! THIS IS THE WORST THING EVER! :D

Seriously though, although Lara was redesigned a few times from TR1-> The Last Revelation, and then again for Angel of Darkness... and again for the Legend->Underworld trilogy, she still looked instantly recognisable as Lara Croft.

I can see what they are trying to do in that last picture: she still has the bangs and Vulcan-esque eyebrows...

I disagree.

She looks like a more realistic Lara, and it's nice that she doesn't have ridiculously oversized breasts like she did in the original PS1 games.

That screams Lara Croft to me. If I had not heard about the new game and seen that picture, I would have said that this reminded me of Lara.

Yeah i'm really looking forward to this game. Actually I better order my copy.

I'm actually really looking forward to this game. I can see why hardcore fans of the series might mourn a reboot but for gamers only casually interested in the series, well, the franchise just seems a bit bloated. It's gone on for too long.

I don't have much problem with reboot, in fact I can think of a few series that could do well from following this lead *coughresidentevilcough*

Blue Blood, that is being facetious and I am not looking forward to this game by the way.

I'm not saying that all white women look alike, but those three images look like the exact same person only redeveloped with newer tech every time. Hell, I'm pretty sure that her eyes are brown as well, just a lighter shade. She looks like Lara Croft. If anything could be seen as an improvement about this game, it's that she actually looks like a real woman and has the physique that a woman would have if she did half the shit Lara pulls off.

Nope. I'm not being facetious here, I just don't see the new Lara as looking anything like the old Lara beyond most basic of traits.

And by what physical traits does she not resemble Lara?

Her face.

I've said this since day one, back when I was really looking forward to the game. She doesn't look like Lara.

Hm, I don't know, man. Looking at the pictures you provided, she looks more-or-less the same as ever.

She was originally designed for a console that couldn't do much in terms of faces, hence massive lips and eyes to make them stand out. Now, they're finally moving her design along with the technology, hence the realistic look.

Old Lara Croft is more exaggerated in her facial structure, looking more like an anime character than an actual person. The new one is simply a more realistic version of said character. They look alike to me, or at the very least, I'm not going to look at new Lara Croft and go "Gee, I have no idea who the fuck this is."

For a second I thought I was blind. Apparently the last one doesn't look like the first one despite looking.. A LOT like the first one.

I am going to stay clear of spoilers, because I want to be surprised when I play this game. Nice to see it's getting 9/10 scores.

And a sixth one by Game Informer:

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/tomb_raider/b/ps3/archive/2013/02/25/tomb-raider-review.aspx

9.3

The reboot now has enough reviews for a score on Metacritic; an 88 based on those 6, and a Gamerankings score of 87 out of 17 reviews.

To be fair, the negativity has nothing to do with the quality of the game. The negativity has to deal with the messages the game is displaying.

I for one would be thrilled if it turned out the percieved negative themes turned out to be completely wrong or outweighed by a balanced presentation that strengthens the story in context. Still, I'm holding off until I've heard some reviews by people who aren't paid to write down their opinion alongside advertisements for the product they're reviewing.
