It's cheats through the PC version's developer console, as far as I know.

List of what they're working on fixing/adding

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2106453

I'll be glad when the day/night tweak gets put in. They're trying to implement rainy weather too, but unfortunately there's a bug that keeps the zombies from moving in the rain (this doesn't happen in the unmodified version), once that's fixed, pc owners can enjoy rain and day/night cycles hopefully. So far the stuff I've fixed in my game include weapon durability, field of view, gloomy weather, and increased weapon durability, the default was just too unrealistic, quick weapon change with mouse wheel, etc...

Ok, so I just beat the game today. And, having played it almost non-stop for the past few days, I think I should voice my opinion. I recently watched a review video on youtube of this game, the reviewer stated a few things that I originally disagreed with. However, as I played the game more and more, I found myself thinking "okay, the guy knows what he's talking about".

Through my experience in the game, I've found it to be like a mixture of Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, and Oblivion/Fallout. The open world thing is nice, however not much of it gets to be explored, especially if you're doing certain quests, because it usually just involves going from point a to point b, and then backtracking to point a. Earlier in the game, it's honestly a little more fun, because as you progress and level up, ALL enemies level with you. So if you're level 30, and decide to go back to the resort thinking you can just mow through the lower level zombies for some fun, you're mistaken. I've also found that sometimes the amount of zombies that attack you at once can be a little overwhelming. I've also found that certain zombies just spawn out of nowhere (no really, I've literally been attacked by zombies in a room that was empty, purely because it just randomly spawned there). I'm not going to complain about how fast your HP drops in game because I'm going with that they wanted it to be a bit more realistic.

As for the graphics, they're nice, but from afar. Up close, you'll notice that the lighting in the game is very brutal, and some of the rendering can be..well..off. Especially in one cutscene where the entire background was black and blue and it looked like someone's acid trip. Also, rocks aren't supposed to be shiny. Neither are humans, even if they're supposed to be sweating of what, nobody is that shiny.

I've also found the game to be buggy at times. For example, when driving in one of the various cars you're allowed to drive in game, I've found the left button to suddenly stop working, causing me to drive into a tree or something, which usually results in losing a little hp from attacking zombies. This tends to happen after hitting a zombie, though it sometimes happens otherwise. I also have the speculation that the game's geometry is somewhat off, because I've found myself getting stuck on absolutely nothing, and end up unable to move, only able to free myself after jumping a few times. I've also found that the minimap in-game can't really be trusted, at two points in the game, I've actually had to look online for quest answers because my mini-map was trying to tell me to go through a rock wall, or send me in the opposite direction from where I was actually supposed to be going. Not to mention it changes itself if you show it the correct way, which I think that you shouldn't have to show a map the correct way. It's there to show you. The game's collision detection I've also found to be off at times, having my character's kick attack (the only attack that doesn't use stamina, and supposedly can't be interrupted) end up going either right through the zombie I'm trying to kick, or found it actually getting interrupted despite the game saying it can't be interrupted, which led to quite a few cheap deaths. Same goes for the range of certain weapons and zombie hits. For example, I've swung a machete at a zombie only to somehow have it miss, and let the zombie attack me from the same range, yet it hits me and costs me HP. I've also found this happening with harder zombies like thugs and (slight spoiler) rams, where I can see the zombies entire hand/foot in front of me, yet still pushing me back and giving me HP damage.

Guns in the game are borderline useless, as ammo is incredibly scarce until very late in the game, and even then the only real use for a gun is to take out human enemies. Zombies, even with headshots, have apparently built up an immunity to being shot and take very little damage unless you're using a rifle or some sort. Even shotguns do little damage unless it's a direct headshot, making this game incredibly melee-centric. The melee weapons in the game are nice, however they lose durability very fast, and by very fast, I mean unless your machete or cane knife or whatever weapon you're using has at least 50 durability, it's most likely going to break after about 4-5 zombie kills. So don't get too attached to that knife or hammer you like.

I think I've just about covered what I felt wasn't too great about the game, so I'll go on to what I did like about it.

The storyline to the game is really good. It follows your character (actually in a group of 4, though the others don't help you unless you're in multiplayer. They don't show up outside of cutscenes anyway) being one of only a few people who are immune to whatever is making people turn into zombies. You start off in the hotel and you have to make your way through the hallways and out of the place until you end up getting knocked unconscious and you meet the lifeguard among a bunch of other people who managed to survive the outbreak. Survivors will also give you sidequests that you can take for experience, money, and sometimes weapons. Also, as a quick note, when you're in the hotel in the beginning, and the guy tells you to run. Do it. The zombies chasing you are level 50 Infected, so trying to fight them is a terrible idea. Anyway, the main story goes on, and you eventually find out what's causing the whole thing, meeting quite a few survivors and having a couple emotional points as well. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't played it yet.

The general gameplay is also quite fun. It makes you feel like you're actually trying to survive the zombie apocalypse and zombies are literally everywhere, and they want your flesh in their faces. Each character specializes in something. Logan, the ex-football player, is the all-round character, though he specializes in throwing weapons. Purna, a bodyguard, specializes in guns, Xiang mei, who specializes in bladed weapons, and Sam B, the rapper from the opening cutscene, who specializes in blunt weapons. I chose Logan for my playthrough, and even though he specializes in thrown weapons, I've actually found myself using blades and a few blunt weapons more than anything else. The actions are fairly fluent, and it's pretty cool seeing everything slow down a bit when you chop off a zombie's head or limb just as it's about to eat your face off.

Overall, the game is fun to play, and it's definitely more multiplayer suited, as single player tends to get quite difficult without a friend to help you get a zombie off your back. I won't say the game is BAD, but it's definitely not what it was cracked up to be. The amount of good factors in the game, just don't make up for the amount of things that screw it up. This game is definitely more of a "rent" game than a "buy" game.

Everything stated above is from my personal experience on the PC-Steam version of Dead Island, with the character Logan. Everything is in this user's personal opinion and may not reflect the opinion of others who have played the game.

Sorry about the wall of text. TL;DR: The game's good, just not THAT good.

I've only been playing an hour and I can really feel how open the game world is. I just started wandering for awhile and the game let me, it was awesome in that sense. I like the weapons a bit too, since you may get really crappy weapons that break after some use, but you can always find another paddle or broomstick. It's been awhile since I played a game where I didn't care about getting all the collectibles and items, and just played the game.

But as Ex-Gear said above, every once in awhile a zombie does spawn in a room you're in. And most missions so far have me running from a spot to another, with my own exploring in between. Obviously they could have polished the game more and maybe involved some more exploring missions, but otherwise it's an incredibly fun experience once you look past the little flaws here and there.

Plus actually having to run from zombies in a game is interesting, instead of just mowing them over with a machine gun.

Playing through this game with the Hokuto Shinken mod (from in the Fist of the Dead Star video), and it's more fun than the regular game. I'm not a fan of Oblivion/Fallout 3-style first-person RPGs, I generally find them to be utterly boring, but this mod actually makes smashing zombies around enjoyable while I run around doing missions and sidequests.

I've not been following this game so I don't really know if it's worth it's own topic. Also I've not seen anyone make a topic for this game even though it's due out in a few months.

I thought I'd seen it all... but I was wrong.

Dead Island Riptide is geting it's own Collectors Edition and it's well... It's a statue... of a womans torso, Her arms have been ripped off, the legs ripped off... and the head has been ripped off.And of course, there are traces of bone sticking out.

I've put an image of the collectors edition in the spoiler because it's a tad graphic, however at the same time it's incredibly goofy. It's no more graphic or gross than most of the screens/video in this thread, but just remember, this is a statue designed to be put on display!

Expecting Tumblr to pitch a fit about this one way or another.

This is absolutely ridiculous though. "Hey guys we sure got a lot of emotional reaction out of that Dead Island trailer, how do we one up it?" "Let's include a statue in the collectors edition catering to exploitation fetishists for the sake of controversy".

Sickening.

I can only assume Geri Halliwell is one of the main characters in this game.

That statue is bad taste all over. I don't care for zombies at all, but why would anyone seriously want a bust of a zombie bust? It's disgusting both aesthetically and as a work of 'art'. Carbo's hit the nail on the head.

Oh but wait.... it gets better. We have comment from the developers on it.

Dead Island Riptide is one of the most anticipated releases of the year and is set to build on the original’s reputation for OTT action, dark humour and brutal zombie bashing,"

[...]

We wanted to provide a unique collector’s edition that was utterly 'Dead Island' and would make a striking conversation piece on any discerning zombie gamer's mantel.”

Dead Island Riptide is one of the most anticipated releases of the year? Well thats a lie...

Anyway, this statue is aparenlty very limited and was made because it would make a striking conversation piece? Hows the conversation going to start.

"And baby this is my gaming room"

"Are you going to kill me!?"

I don't particually find this gross, I just find it unbelivably stupid in every way. Just think, some ones mind came up with this as a good idea and somebody else said 'yes this is a good idea.'

If you put that in your living room and your friends and family see it, don't expect to be invited to any more funerals.

Even if I was a hardcore fan of Dead Island I would deliberately not buy the collector's edition because I wouldn't want that piece of shit in my house.

Geez I draw porn sometimes and even I think that's one of the most objectifying, degrading and downright disgusting pieces of merchandise ever produced for something.

I find the statuette gross both in how gory it is and how it's a prize example of misogyny within the gaming industry. Way to alienate a core demographic. Yep, I'll be judging those who pre-order this.

Obviously I understand why it's gory, it's a zombie game, but they have literally dehumanised a woman by not only having her be a zombie (which is fine) but also reduced her down to being just a pair of tits. Wow.

I dunno, I don't think "What the fuck is that christ I'm going home you freak" "No wait but..." is much of a conversation.

Well it's generating press coverage, and has got people who would otherwise have nothing to do with DI talking. A lot of negative coverage mind, but I seriously doubt that'll translate to poor sales.

So uh...that's a thing. I'm not quite sure who this would appeal to. I guess I shouldn't be surprised about it considering this is from the same developer that made a dead child trailer which was completely unrelated to the actual final product.

So why limit this to the UK... when we can have an edition for the USA too!

Theres a production photo here that gives you an idea of the size, it's huge.

Hahahahahaha! That's BRILLIANT! The parts in bold actually made me laugh, because I can't believe they didn't expect this kind of backlash. I mean, I didn't expect them to pull it, but lololololololol

We sincerely regret this choice. We are collecting feedback continuously from the Dead Island community, as well as the international gaming community at large, for ongoing internal meetings with Deep Silver's entire international team today. For now, we want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again.

I wonder what the substitute will be, if anything. These things have already been produced and that can't have been cheap, considering they're 31cm tall, hand-painted resin statues. Maybe they'll just throw out the Rigor Mortis Edition from the USA version instead, or they'll just cheap out entirely. It doesn't explicitly say that this version is being pulled, but it really should be.

Gah, why am I even talking about this game? I haven't the slightest interest in it beyond the awfulness that is this CE.
