Let's be positive for once

Recommended Posts

Ooh, hey, how'd I miss this? I love making lists! Hokay, let's go game-by-game here, from S3&K on. Main series only, so this doesn't drag on forever:

Sonic 4: The map screen. S4 might not have a whole lot else to boast about over the "true" classics, but its map screen is something I always wished the classic series had. It gives a rough idea of where every zone is in relation to the others, and it's rather pretty, too.

Sonic Adventure: For a first try in 3D, it certainly could've been worse. It fleshed out Knuckles' backstory decently, incorporating its own plot into the existing mythology of the series pretty well. The Egg Carrier levels were also some of the most spectacular I've seen in the series. Not graphically, exactly, but in terms of scope. Not even Terminal Velocity could match the feeling of scale and danger induced by the Sky Deck.

Sonic Adventure 2: It pulled off a darkish, complexish plot with surprising competence, the Sonic/Shadow-style levels were a load of fun to play, and the music was excellent. Associating each character with a different genre really lent them a lot of personality, especially the newbies Shadow and Rouge.

Sonic Heroes: It gave us wacky classic-ish environments in a 3D game for the first time. Don't get me wrong, I loved a lot of the level themes from the Adventure games, but it was definitely nice to see checkered hills again after so long. Oh, and it brought back Vector. He's the best.

Shadow the Hedgehog: The grind rails. My god, the grind rails didn't make me want to kill myself. This one innovation alone was enough to put ShTH above Heroes in my eyes; the fact that the normal controls were also improved and a few of the level themes were very inventive was just gravy. Oh, and the plot, while terrible, definitely falls into so-bad-it's-good territory for me. The scene where Black Doom uses paralyzing gas on the entire main cast is one of the most unintentionally funny things I've ever seen in a video game.

Sonic '06: Well, uh... I've gotten plenty of laughs out of riffing on it with friends? The music's not bad, with a couple of tracks that are really spectacular, and some of the CG cutscenes are pretty good. I like that there was an attempt to get another human in on the plot, misguided as the execution turned out to be.

Sonic Unleashed: The daytime stages were exhilarating, if a little light on platforming, and the nighttime stages were a lot more fun than they're generally given credit for. Not fantastic, but certainly not awful. The music was quite good, too, particularly at night, and the homing-attack reticle was a long-overdue addition.

Sonic Colours: The 2D segments were a little overabundant, but I'd still probably call this the best game since S3&K... or at least since Rush Adventure. My god, I love Rush Adventure.

So yeah. I kind of like this series, I guess.

Is it me or are there few to none who ever talks about Sonic and the Secret Rings with Sonic and the Black Knight.

They were good game IMO.

Both of those game showed Sonic with a greater personality then Colors and '06 (wich I didn't play).

The gameplay could have been better but SatBK sure had tighter control then SatSR and you could also play with other characters in-game and not in multi player like SatSR.

But I must say that when it was about having fun with friends, SatSR topped SatBK.

Well, lets go down the list then, shall we?

Sonic Adventure 1: I've always liked Sonic re-design, even though I also like his classic design *hears huge amount of gasps and murmers* Yeah I know guys, it IS actually possible to like both. Also, Eggman's redesign is pretty badass too, and he has a great voice actor. Also, I really liked that music from that lost world place and its hub-world. I can still hear it pretty clearly in my head, over a decade later.

Sonic Adventure 2: Uh...well the Sonic/Shadow levels are cool, except those last few.

Sonic Heroes: Frog Forest is cool

Sonic Advance trilogy: The sprites are really awesome

Sonic 2006: uh...well...ya know...hey look over there! *runs off to next point*

Shadow the Hedgehog: I think black is a cool color. Yeah, I don't know about these POS games.

Sonic Rush games: I like the music!

Sonic Colors: Holy shit a great console Sonic game, took you 15 years but you finally did it Sega

Does anyone else notice how what makes Sonic great was kind of split in half for Unleashed? Think about it. The day stages represent the speed aspect of Sonic games and don't contain a bunch of platforming. The night stages represent the platforming and not as much speed. (I'm not quite sure where the beat-'em-up aspect of the night stages come in.) A neat idea, but it doesn't really work. Also, I'm a sucker for the Knuckles raps in SA2.

...also, also, the atmosphere of Sonic Adventure is something I've never experienced from another Sonic game. I can't quite explain it, but everything in that game felt right, like a perfect translation to 3D. This is all just opinion, too.

Maybe because it felt like in the classic in a 3D world?:

Emerald Coast - Beach

A very unique stage wich felt calm (except for the whale part) and very stunning visually

Windy Valley - Jungle Sky -> Cassic = Wind Forteress/Sky Sanctuary

Starting in the jungle to get get blasted in the sky by a tornado and *fly like an eagle, let my spirit lift away*

Lost Temple - Ruins -> Cassic = Mystic Cave/Hidden Palace

I must say, some area in the temple gave out nice info on what happened in the past with the ancient civilisation with the glyph.

Ice Cap - Ice -> Cassic = *cough* Ice.. cap?

Snowboarding = Win.

Hot Shelter - Reasearch Facility

Dunno what to say except that its... big....

Sky Deck

One of the biggest stage of the game with different setting and the last part is amazing as you play up left right down without area restictions.

Final Egg - Eggman Base -> Cassic = Metropolis/Death Egg/Metalic Madness

What can I say except that all final stages are the most challenging, creative and hard to complete unharmed once?

Speed Highway - Highway -> Cassic = Chemical Plant/Stardust Speedway/Quartz Quadrant

Running on the walls, running down the building and running past the cars... I can't descript this epic feeling.

Twinkle Park - Amusement Park -> Cassic = Spring Yard Zone/Collision Chaos

Another very unique stage where everything is in movement from point A to B.

Very coloful, lively and full of action.

Red Mountain - Mountains/Volcano -> Cassic = Marble Zone/Hill Top/Lava Reef

Staring off at the top of a mountain to then enter inside and explore the volcano is just like in Lava Reef and just like in S&K you are chasing after Eggman tho not for the same reason.

Casinopolis - Casino -> Cassic = Casino Night/Carnival Night

I played over 30 hours in the NiGHTS card table game, the end.

But I get what your trying to say.

Mostly due to having badniks everywhere.

Colors also had badniks but all of the stages where already part of an amusement park while in SA1, they had their own settings and access point.

Also, it was the 1st full 100% 3D Sonic game.

That's the first time I hear that liking both designs is supposed to be something surprising.
