THQ CEO Unveils New Yet Obvious Strategy

THQ CEO Brian Farrell have thought up of a 'great plan': Make Great Games.

Looking to turn around its recent fortunes, THQ has devised a new strategy: make great games. In a recent interview with Gamasutra, THQ CEO Brian Farrell said:

"Our strategy is to focus on bigger titles. The formula is to make great games and market them effectively. High review scores lead to high sales and high profits. We think we have a plan in place to do that and return the company back to profitability."

On paper, this sounds like a lovely strategy, though perhaps a bit idealistic. Superman 64 was a crap game with crap marketing and crap review scores, but it sold very well. Compare that to a highly-regarded title like Ico, which didn't exactly set the world on fire with its sales, despite its excellent review scores. THQ has also had great success with its Nickelodeon games, which aren't always the best in terms of quality, but do a strong job at serving a younger audience.

While it's great that THQ is committed to making "great games", I don't know if focusing on "bigger titles" that get "high review scores" is the thing to do. Frankly, other publishers are in a position to gun down its big efforts (that don't involve WWE). Perhaps finding an unserved audience would be smarter than going all in.

Sarcasm aside, if they want to do that, then they need to focus on gameplay and story more than just focusing on graphics that tries to hide that the rest of the game is sh*tty. Also, they need to use effort and when saying you want to make great games, STICK WITH IT and not act lazy.
