Seriosly no real hedgehogs have ears like that, that's ignoring the heavy stylisation and the fact he behaves more like a squirrel than a hedgehog ( reffering to his unperturbation towards high places, hopping between trees, rocks and dashing along rooves ) ,

and why on Earth would an anthro-hedgehog be a domesticated variety(african pygmy hedgehog)? Slavery?

Sonic has always been refered to as a African Pygmy Hedgehog on pretty much the majority of sources.

But hey, not that you can really tell, he is a cartoony anthro character after all.
