Sega releasing a 'new' vintage collection

So before the PSN went down, Sega were putting on the 'Vintage' collection, the set of games that XBL users had been enjoying for the past year or so.

They had a few extra features like leaderboards and online co-op/versus mode etc. Nothing too special however.

Well... about a month ago, Sega confirmed that they were bringing Monster World IV to the XBL and PSN. It now turns out that this is going to be apart of a new collection of games due for release on the PSN and XBL.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land.

Revenge of Shinobi.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

Wonder Boy in Monster World.

Super Hang-On.

Interestingly, Monster World 4 was never released on consoles outside of Japan and even more interestingly... Sega is actually localising it for the PSN/XBL release.

Sega say that the release of these titles will be near the end of 2011 and into early 2012.

Hit me with that hot sauce baby!

I'm not sure I understand. So they'll be together when you download them? Or are they just releasing all of those games at the same time?

They'll be seperate games, but they'll all fall under the 'Sega vintage' banner.

E.g. this is what Gunstar Heroes looks like when you start it up.

But this is what Sonic looks like when you start it up.

They're seperate games, but they're all linked together as the 'Sega Vintage collection' you buy them all seperately, they're just slapped with 'vintage' as it's a good way to sell them for more money than they probably should.

SUPER HANG-ON YOU SAY? Hell yes! Anyone who's spoken to me for any length of time has probably heard my frequent rantings on how bunk it is that SEGA never gives it any love on their compilations. That was my first racing game and I still have a total soft spot for it... trumps OutRun by a mile in my books.

Wait, Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Isn't that one of the crappy Alex Kidd games?

Why can't we get some 8-bit love on XBLA/PSN?

Also please release Sonic CD/3D and Knuckles Chaotix SEGA! :P

Nar, Miracle World was the good one. Although it did leave me with an intense hatred for rock/paper/scissors...

Alex Kidd in Miracle World? Really? That'd be the first Master System game released in the collection, so it'll be interesting to see how that's handled.

Good to see none of the games are on the Ultimate Collection disc though. Means I can buy them all :D

Ironically, I'd picked Alex Kidd in Miracle World as RadioSEGA's Game of the Month for May...

Actually, it's the Master System version.

e: and Wonder Boy in Monster Land is Arcade. Seems like they're hand-picking the best versions to port.

I always got confused with the Wonder Boy games. What's the difference between Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and Wonder Boy in Monster World?

Monster World is the 5th game or so I think. Last one in the Wonder Boy saga.

There's 5 Wonder Boy games and of those five, three belong to the Monster subsaga (Land, Lair and World being 2,3 and 5 respectively). Monster World 4 comes afterwards and lacks the Wonder Boy title, appropriately so because the main char is female.

The names on that series are a goddamn mess.

Yeah, they do look horribly confusing. I think I've played most of them, but it's been a while. Tried a ROM of Monster World 4, and couldn't understand what the bloody hell was going on XD

Monster World is one of my favourite Mega Drive games though, so looking forward to that.

Good to see Miracle World on the list. It was the first Sega game I ever played and I have much fondness for it. Though the last time I played it was in 2007 so its probably about time I did so again.

Arcade version with Genesis Original Mode and I would line up in Sony's metaphorical PSN Release line to buy it.

BA BA BA BUMP!

So then... According to the original Sega Blog post about this. This collection is actually due out on the 360/PSN &.. ... well Wiiware isn't likely anymore... around urm... now?

Remember? The tentative release date was end of 2011 - early 2012.

Has anyone every heard any other news about this? I imagine that they would have outsourced them again like they did with the original Vintage titles, but for something that they made a big song and a dance about, has anyone heard or even seen news about this since the original announcement?

Only Monster World IV was supposed to be getting it's first ever western localisation, something like that would have taken a lot of work, so if it ever did go into production, why have we not heard anything about it?

So, like, is Ristar ever going to be released solo on PSN and XBLA as Sonic and so many other games have been, or are we forever going to be forced to buy it as part of large retail-released retro collections?

Alex Kidd in Miracle World should have an option you can set, where when you play any other Vintage Collection game, there's a 75% chance of it booting up Alex Kidd instead with it's sudden, hauntingly mocking title screen theme. Should have blown your cartridge a bit harder fellow Master System II users...

Yeah, I found out about it via XBOX Achievements, which saved all the screens.

But I'm a ho bag that pushes sites I write for so I'll link to the story I wrote up: http://segabits.com/blog/2012/03/23/xbla-monster-world-and-alex-kidd-vintage-collections-revealed/

These screens are the most exciting! Remind me of XBLA's game room. I'd love to see more collections like this. A Streets of Rage trilogy or Sonic 1-3&Knuckles set would be fun. Sure they're all games that have been released multiple times, but I'd double dip if they gave it a presentation like this.

Sega Ages Online formalized in Japan on PSN & XLA

Sega Vintage Collection 3 PSN and two compilations - Alex Kidd & Monster World - who recently leaked on XLA were eventually formalized by Sega for release in spring ... but for now only on the side of Japan.

PSN, Sega plans to release as program titles Super Hang-On, The Revenge of Shinobi, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV, finally, all sold by the piece 600 yen (€ 5.50). The XLA is certainly better treated as all these games will be combined into two separate compilations advertised at 800 MS points.

As for options, we will find these titles in both their international and Japanese version. It will be possible to save and retrieve replays, replay of the music in a way Juke Box, or posting his best performances online via Trial mode. For its part, Super Hang-On Arcade version will be made by Yu Suzuki as the only stereoscopic 3D-compatible. Missing from this particular announcement and a date for the West.
