Dimps always makes their handheld Sonic games with 7 Zones. Why is this a surprise?

Because, 9 zones would be the same as its console counterpart AND would allow them to cover all of the main handhelds titles:

Classic Era (Not technically handheld, but they're ignoring the GG games)

Sonic 1-Green Hill

Sonic 2-Casino Night

Sonic 3-(Launch Base?)

Advance Era:

Sonic Advance

Sonic Advance 2

Sonic Advance 3

Modern/Rush Era:

Sonic Rush

Sonic Rush Adventure

Sonic Colors DS

Which two of these games are going to be ignored and why do they need to be?

Good point. And sort of off topic, but I hope Toy Kingdom from SA3 is in it.

My guess is that we'll be seeing Sonics 1, 2, and 3, as well as Sonic Advance 2 and 3 and Sonic Rush 1 and 2. Sonic Advance has a lot of levels that are remade from the Genesis games and features no new characters, so that could have gotten the boot, plus Colors is in the console version. My guess on the level list is something like this:

-Green Hill

-Casino Night

-Hydrocity

-Music Plant

-Route 99

-Mirage Road

-Sky Babylon

-Heroes' Special Stage for Modern Sonic

-Sonic 3 Special Stage for Classic Sonic

-Bosses would be Big Arm, a machine from the Advance series driven by Modern Eggman, and a machine from Sonic Rush piloted by Eggman Nega, while the Rivals could be Metal Sonic, Gemerl, and Johnny. Supporting characters could probably Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Blaze, and Marine.

I myself would be happy with a list like that. I mean, sure, it's not as full as we were expecting, but it'd still be a solid representation of the classics, Advance games, and Rush series, as well as the most memorable battles and encounters from those games.

New interview from Gamereactor:

3DS version only getting 7 levels? Let the fan-rage commence...

Well fuck me silly

Though if Green Hill and casino Night are the only ones from the classics, then we could still get a stage from each of the advance and rush games, or if sonic 3 got one we'll still at least get 2 advances and both rushes. Or maybe there'll be only two from each era and a new level at the end.

Though now I'm starting to believe that bosses will be with each stage, like Big Arms going with Green Hill Zone. Maybe we'll be getting a Triple Trouble boss for the Casino Night Zone Boss

though as long as Music plant and Cyber Track/Chaos Angel make it in I'll be fine and dandy

EDIT: Or if EXshad gets his way, I'll be just fine

GAME Australia also says there's 7 stages in the 3DS version.

  • The ultimate celebration of 20 years of gaming history. Sonic Generations is the ultimate game for Sonic fans old and new.
  • For the first time, play as both Classic Sonic & Modern Sonic in the ultimate Sonic adventure.
  • Nine iconic environments from Sonics 20 years are each revisited, recreated and re-imagined – these are all brand new environments built especially for this game.
  • Each of these environments include two tracks – Classic Sonic in side scrolling 2D and Modern Sonic in stunning 3D.
  • The 3DS features seven environments, six of which are exclusive to the platform. Each environment includes two tracks, each designed to showcase each Sonics’ unique features.

At the end of the interview did anyone notice she said something about the game coming out in 2-4? What does that mean? Or did I hear wrong and she said this fall?

There is only so much you can fit in one of those game-cards.

As far as I know, the high-capacity versions haven't been introduced yet, and they're using low-capacity ones till they become cheaper.

7 Zones in two completely different game play styles both having a number of their own acts?

Sounds pretty fair to me.

The 3DS cartridge is 2GB, 2GB is far from small, it's half the size the size of the 360's disc interms of space. Sonic Generations 3DS doesn't even look like a 3DS game that should be retail, maybe it'd be excepted a bit better as a downloadable?

360 discs hold roughly 8 gigs in space.

Generations 3DS looks severely undermined but as a game it passes the average scale of 3DS quality. It's also impossible to capture the full quality on camera or direct feed of a 3DS game so obviously it looks like crap from where we're sitting.

We've only seen the early Alpha build so far. Stuff like the framerate can still be fixed.

From the way it was said, it sounded to me as if there are only two acts for each zone. One for Classic Sonic and the other for Modern.

Oh I'm sorry, for a second I got it confused with the Wii's disc. It isn't so much wthe graphics that I'm worried about though, it's more so framerate and level length, which, even for the first level, seems extremely short, about half as long as the console version of Green Hill.

Yeah, but the main console version has that many acts per 'hog as well; however, there's also 5 missions to complete per level once each of those acts is completed. My guess is the 3DS version will function in a similar way, though I wouldn't be surprised if there's less missions. Perhaps there will be 3 missions, keeping in tune with the 3-acts that Dimps has in their games?

  • 2 weeks later...

At 1:49 she said "They have taken 9 of the best environments" This confirms that the leaks are 100% true and we wouldn't be seeing any more levels...

Ah poop. :( Well there goes my theory on them having leaked a list only to surprise us (nicely) with a much larger one!

9 Levels is just so....... insignificant. I know they'll be great and all (if GHZ and CE are anything to judge by) but seriously!? 9? To represent 20 years of Sonic games? Ok <_<

Lara Croft is hot though.

See what sad is that despite gaming being in the next generation these games are much harder to develop on time than they were last generation ( GC,PS2, Xbox)

Surprisingly Sonic Unleashed HD is actual made in higher resolution than most popular games like COD and HALO so in the end they are putting much more effort in the environmental and graphics. Considering the eye candy we are getting and how each environment is totally diffrent from eachother with minor reuses like Seaside Hill.

Knowing that we are going to have 9 levels in a good considerable amount in 2.5 years in development considering how massive the levels actually are and that's not counting level cameos we might be getting from Bosses and Rival Battles or the obvious Final Zone.

I think before we judge the game we need to have it in our hands before we call it insignificant...plus I'm sure DLC will make up for it somewhat.

Don't forget that each level has 5 missions, too.

I still laugh quietly to myself whenever someone brings up the "Sega did this on purpose to throw us off the trail" theory.
