General Nintendo sales/business discussion topic (previously: The Wii U Thread)

Not offering the controller separately is stupid. Simple as. It also completely eliminates the "OMIGOD MULTIPLAYER" fangasm that everyone was going nuts about about a month ago.

I think we need to know exactly why there is only one WiiPad per console, and how much they cost to produce, before going off on rages at the company for this decision.

So... you think that semiconductor technology is at a stage where it's commercially viable to release a significantly more powerful console than the PS3, Xbox and the Wii U? I don't.

If we don't see MS and Sony abstain on a new console (as they are both absolutely claiming to be doing) for another 2-3 years, I think we will see more economically-powered consoles, ones that aren't cutting edge, in a similar vein to the Wii. This is both to save money at the manufacturing level and for the consumer, but more importantly because the market, outside of the absolute top 5% of hardcore gamers, doesn't demand it. There is zero market demand for this technology and the success of the Wii, and the continued success of both 360 and PS3 indicate no need to push the market forward.

I say again: Nintendo was right.

If you want the latest cutting edge graphics and the same frickin' games, go and buy an Alienware PC and stop being so vain. Plenty of 16x anti-aliased, specular bump mapped HDR DoF soft shadowed ambient-occluded porn there.

I'm not surprised at all that it only works with one screen controller. Hell, in the trailer itself, the guy was playing Mario on the Wii Remote, then switched to the controller when he decided to continue portable. So it's not like "Player 1" will get the "cool" controller while everyone else doesn't. It looks like it'll only be used when relevant to the game design.

Besides, come on, who really expected this thing to be able to output up to four different HD images on multiple devices all at once?

You'd think it'd at least support 2 controllers...

It'd better make Classic Controllers Pro more standard. >:/

It supports one screen controller and a whole bunch of Wii Remote +s.

And where did this information come from? I heard Nintendo were focusing on two at least.

Wasn't it Reggie, who said this? I don't quite remember.

My friends and I came back to the classroom at lunch just to watch the Nintendo conference.

Zelda - F*ck Yeah!

3DS - F*ck Yeah!

Wii U - Interesting, I wasn't expecting that. I wonder what games it has.

I also wish they had focused more on the actual console, as it took me a while to convince my friend it was a new HD console and not just a controller. He also thought the HD Zelda tech-demo was Skyward Sword.

What?

I guess he just misunderstood. I don't understand how, though.

From a Nintendo representative.

From a Nintendo representative.

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was a representative. I'm still not buying it, representatives can say the damnedest things sometimes.

Wii U - Interesting, I wasn't expecting that. I wonder what games it has.

As of right now, we know of Lego City, Pikmin 3, Smash Bros., Kid Icarus, Darksiders II, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Metro: Last Light, Batman: Arkham City, Ninja Gaiden 3, Guitar Hero (based on comments made by Pachter on GTTV yesterday) and a new (possibly exclusive?) Assassin's Creed. EA has expressed a keen interest in the system; games like Championship Manager, FIFA, Madden, Mass Effect etc will be ideal for the platform. Mario and Zelda titles are sure to be released for it too, and I'd be very surprised if it didn't see Metroid make an appearance. We should expect Sonic Generations and Sonic 4 for it too, as well as simple games like Monopoly and Uno.

I'm interested to see what support it'll get from Activision, Square-Enix and Rockstar. If they all come on-board as well, the system won't fail to be competitive.

I just want to see what the online set-up is now.

Yeah I posted that a while ago. It's a proprietary disc format, equivalent to a single layer Blu-Ray disc. Not too shabby.

What kind of game then there will be!? Kawaii.

For some reason this made me laugh.

Anyway so I see Nintendo are still going with their own storage media - can't say if it's for better or worse. But to see that it at least holds the capacity of a single layer Blu-Ray is re-assuring.

Nintendo fanboys who claimed that graphics aren't everything, suddenly become graphics whores.

You guys can deny this all you want, but you know deep down you're going "heh, what now PS360? Problem?" YOU KNOW YOU ARE.

I'm not gonna lie man, my inner dormant Nintendo fanboy is squirming with delight at the fact that the playing field is leveled and Nintendo is on even ground with the others again.

Wii U Screen confirmed as radar tracker in Aliens Colonial Marines

Randy Pitcher...

The device will, at times, become the game's motion tracker, a device in the fiction of the Alien universe that can track the location of enemies and friendlies by their motion. Pitchford explained that players may be asked to sweep their controller around them, looking for approaching enemies, which will show up as blips on the display of the controller.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they've only stated that they're 'focusing' on having two WiiU controllers at most, to play it safe. Split-screen multiplayer uses multiple images at the same time anyway, so processing is not an issue, I imagine.

I think split screen still takes a lot of processing power. Usually graphic fidelity has to be reduced (obvious examples will be the trackside Miis dissapearing on Mario Kart Wii in multiplayer. That sort of thing would presumebly be required to an extensive amount to produce 4 HD full resolution screens.

I mean I'm no professional game designer, I'm working from bits and pieces of knowledge with regards to how games work. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

With this whole one controller thing in mind I'm wondering..

They made it a big thing that you wouldn't need to use the TV screen and that stuff could be streamed to the controller. But.. what if I want to play a multiplayer game without the TV? Can I just not do it because it won't work with more than one Wii tablet controller thingy?

lol It seems like the only option is all of us looking on the 6.2 inch screen ala Single Cart mode in Kirby Super Star Ultra.
