General Nintendo sales/business discussion topic (previously: The Wii U Thread)

Just to clear things up, it wasn't EA, it was Frostbite, who are a division inside EA. It was wrong, but they've apologised for Frostbite's tweet, and I think we should just let it go (lol) now. EA has my respect for at least apologising to Nintendo and the fans directly. I don't think there is much more to be said on the issue as it's finished.

It was some guy who had access to the twitter page making bad jokes for April Fools. He was reprimanded for it.

This whole thing is really dumb though. The jokes were bad, not offensive.

The jokes are offensive as it just shows this whole industry is all about circlejerking and being biased is funny and cool. If the PS4 or Xbone were the ones that were selling like shit and EA was supporting the Wii U more, they'd probably do it with the PS4 or Xbone instead and it'd still be offensive.

As I said in the April Fools topic, it was in pretty bad taste and I m glad EA apologised for the stupid "jokes" Frostbite made. Speak for yourself Frostbite, your engine is buggy as hell most of the time.

Funny thing is Peter Moore had to come up and apologise to Nintendo (at least to the American division) on Twitter with this message...

Our apologies to partners @NintendoAmerica & fan @FrostbiteEngine ’s poor attempt at April Fools not condoned by EA : unacceptable/ stupid

Sooo when are EA going to make games for Nintendo again?

There are so many variables at play regarding this situation that it's impossible to determine when either company will get their heads out of their butt-cheeks, if ever.

When they think they'll make money doing so.

http://www.nintendo-insider.com/2014/04/02/smoothing-resolution-manuals-guide-gba-virtual-console/

The Virtual Console, since its inception in 2007, has been a great way for new players to experience classic games, and with the Wii U it added even further features. As many will know, the standard features include suspension of the game when you exit and come back. The 3DS and Wii U Virtual Consoles also introduced save states, allowing you to restart at a point you created, which is very handy if you get stuck. Whereas players have also been able to reassign controller inputs in the way that they wish on Wii U.

With the NES, SNES, MSX & PC Engine games on the Wii U Virtual Console this is the extent of the emulation, but, with the Game Boy Advance (GBA) games now on the Virtual Console, there are a few new features that are noteworthy and are beneficial to the platform.

Gamma Reduction
One thing of which many people may not be aware is that with the early releases of the GBA titles on that platform games were artificially brightened in order to compensate for the handheld’s screen which, before the release of the GBA SP, had no lighting whatsoever. The Wii U’s Virtual Console releases of these titles have them all altered in order to compensate for this over brightening.

While many may be angered by this, if your TV is set up properly, you won’t notice that this is even in place, but with the GamePad, it will seem noticeably darker.

metroid-fusion-screen-smoothing.png

Screen Smoothing
Hidden away in the game’s Virtual Console settings menu is the option to smooth the screen. The GBA’s resolution was originally 240×160 which means it is blown up considerably when brought to the TV and the individual pixel placement is incredibly noticeable. As such, when you activate this feature, things will be smoothed.

All diagonal lines will look less blocky and curves will look curved. This makes the games a bit more pleasing to the eye and seem a bit more updated. However, this does not fit all games. For games like Metroid Fusion and Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island, it takes the edge off and doesn’t detriment the graphics at all, but for games like WarioWare Inc., it takes away from the aesthetic, but it’s a purely subjective thing.

This option also doesn’t need you to delve into the Virtual Console menu to activate it, as you can activate it in real-time by pressing down the Right Stick.

metroid-fusion-original-res.png

Resolution
As stated before, the original GameBoy Advance resolution is 240×160. Due to this, the upscale of the games to 1080 has a bit of an issue.

The game doesn’t take up the whole screen, but rather a block of 1620×1080 is an increase of a factor of 6.75 the size as the original. Due to this, it’s not an exact upscale of the game. While there’s no blurring issues with this, many would like to play with the original resolution.

This is possible within the Virtual Console settings menu. In it, it provides an option for Original Resolution, which runs on the TV screen. Due to the fact that would be a tiny little box on a huge screen, the Virtual Console runs it a different way. Instead, it upscales it to the largest whole factor it can on the screen: 1440×960 making it 6×6 pixels for every 1 original pixel.

This doesn’t affect the resolution on the GamePad, and it isn’t possible to run a toggle in real time for this.

metroid-fusion-manual.png

Manual
When the trailers for the GBA titles came on the official Japanese site last week, many people noticed a small ? icon on the GamePad screen, to the side of the gameplay. Many questioned what this was, and now we know.

If you touch that icon, you can bring up the game’s manual onto the GamePad. Unlike previous Wii U manuals, however, these are full detailed scans of the original manual for the GBA game. You have the ability to scroll through the pages using the touchscreen on the GamePad and allow you to zoom if you do so wish.

But, that’s not all. Not only can you look at it on the GamePad, you can have it running on the GamePad, and navigate around it, while still playing the game on the TV screen.

Doubt we'll ever see Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 on there with all its Nintendo e-Reader shit fully functional without an actual e-Reader or cards.

Yeah. It's possible to hack those levels and items into the game, but I'd doubt Nintendo would go the extra mile.

Hey you know what else would be cool? If they put every single game that was on the Wii virtual console to the eshop and GameCube games if they don't want to do that atleast make HD remakes of the cult classics(players choice) it should be too hard since wind waker HD took what 6 months to make?

Since it's page 666, how about some CULT COUNTY from Renegade Kid?

Formerly planned for the 3DS, the downloadable survival horror FPS series is now planned for a multiplatform console release thanks to the power of the Unity engine, and Renegade Kid need $580,000 to make it happen.  Any backers here?

Man Omochao lied like a rug yesterday when he said this thread had just 660 pages.

Looks like Nintendo's investors are frustrated with Iwata;
http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/04/02/report-iwata-in-trouble-at-nintendo
There is a chance that he could be voted off the board in June if things don't change for Nintendo by then.

It may be for the best. That said, at heart, Iwata is a true good man. Hopefully they actually take time to find an excellent resulting successor, and one who can live up to the amount of integrity as his/her predecessor as well.

I think him lying was the least of our problems when he was popping on to the screen every time someone wanted to post. ;)

If we live in an age where Sony's CEO is getting no hate for all the downsizing he's doing (TVs now a spin-off, 5000 employees being fired), but Iwata, who led 2 extremely successful platform launches and made the 3DS into the beast it is now as well as not only refusing to let go of employees by cutting his own paycheck, but even making MORE buildings, then screw this.

And the reason I mentioned this is because Pachter said Sony's CEO was a better leader than Iwata and he is an analyst who leads investors to the right company. I didn't want to talk about him but whatever.

We've always lived in that age.

While I like the way Iwata tries to handle this kind of thing, there's a quote that (ironically) comes from Fire Emblem Awakening that sums it up perfectly: Chivalry and longevity don't often go hand in hand.

Morals can only get you so far in business. As president he has to be prepared to lay people off when things aren't going so hot. Cutting his and Miyamoto's pay isn't going to fix much.

But you know, Viva la Nintendo. They can do no wrong apparently.

The only way that Iwata will no longer be in charge of Nintendo is if the approval rate drops less than 50%, even though it was a drop last year compared to the previous years it is still high enough and have a feeling it is going to be how the quality of life plans are like before Iwata's fate is decided. At the moment, some investors are disappointed and it is understandable due to lack of profit [if it was somewhere like EA, Iwata would have been fired by now] however there are people in the company who are loyal to Iwata and believe that Nintendo will go back to profit.

Then again who will Nintendo get if Iwata gets fired from the top spot and most likely goes to another position in the company? Mr. Miyamoto? (Who is quite high in the approval rate) Someone else?

Speaking of which, was right disappointed when Super Mario Advance 4 came out in Europe. The magazines hyped up all these extra levels and power ups, when I got it, they replaced World-e with a language select since the e-reader wasn't released here. Apparently there is some unused data considering the extra levels in the other languages though and much of the e-reader stuff is in the ROM.

So even though it was a very good game since it was Super Mario Bros. 3 [All-Stars version], it was the expectations plus that it just felt like paying full price for a lesser version and felt a tiny bit ripped off. Also didn't help that around the same time probably a bit later got a Super Nintendo with the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World bundle for less.

Would be lovely if Nintendo made a full version of the game for the Virtual Console and wasn't the first time that Nintendo edited a game but highly doubt it, lucky enough to get the original instruction manuals in (that I'm actually thankful for).

The CEO of an international mega-corporation is trimming down the fat that his predecessor accumulated over several years, minimizing losses and slowly leading the company in a more unified direction. Operating on an enormous scale several times larger than that of Nintendo's. Sony's not in a good position yet, but these layoffs had to happen because the biggest problem they've been suffering for years now is pissing money away on shit they don't need. It's bad for the employees, but it's good for the company as a whole. Hopefully they don't have to do it again in the future. The TV and PC divisions of Sony have been regularly problematic for them over the years, and investors have wanted them gone for a long time.

The CEO of a gaming company is currently running it into the ground, leading with one product that sold several dozens of millions of units less than its predecessor and has consistently performed below expectations, and another which is currently the worst performing major console in the past decade and a half. In the past five years we've seen apology after apology with hardly any actual results, alongside the first fiscal losses the company has suffered since the 1980's. As of right now, he's projected 2014 to be yet another year of financial losses (the third in a row), with figures pointed at $5.8 billion in the red.

Kaz Hirai is the new replacement for the guy who ran Sony into knee deep shit. Now, in his second year in charge (started April 1st, 2012), the company's direction has actually improved. Satoru Iwata is right now running his company into the ground, made it a laughing stock of the only industry in which it operates, and has shown neither investors or consumers a clear vision for the future or any reason to believe he can lead it back to profitability better than a potential replacement.

The people responsible for the PS3's failure are all gone, and those responsible for its subsequent improvement have risen up in the company. Likewise, Iwata and the others responsible for one of the biggest failures this industry has ever seen need to own up to their failure and get out, hopefully to make way for a team that's actually competent and in touch with the times.

Iwata is a good man who is passionate about his company, and I respect him for that, but he doesn't really understand western countries that well. I would like it if Iwata was put, say, in charge of Nintendo of Japan as the Wii U is doing really well there. But I think the CEO position needs to go to someone else, to someone that has a strong understanding of the western audience.

I honestly don't know what they hope to accomplish by getting rid of Iwata, though. Whoever replaces him isn't going to chase the quick profit of going mobile. It really shows how well Nintendo was doing when people are getting pissed off over LESS profits. Yes, that's how it's been. Nintendo's been making less money, they haven't been exactly incurring large losses; the only significant one was when they spent a couple of hundred million on new buildings.
