Sonic The Hedgehog: 20 years of FUUUU

Sonic Unleashed in retrospect, is very easily one of the most likely games to piss me off whenever I play it. I HATE QTEs in ANY game, and I think they should have never been in Sonic games. It'd be more likely to tolerate them if, like in the early stages, it only split you off to a separate path of the level, but after like half the game, they become instant death ramps. And the QTE jump pads are also instant death. I'd also be better without Tails' flying sequence, and as usual, without the God of War ripoff brawler, the Werehog.

I also hated the medal and item collecting in that game, but ironically, love it in Colors since you only have to collect 5 red rings per level, and then once you have them, you've almost got everything. Then once you get the 7 Chaos Emeralds, all that's left to get are the S ranks, and those don't matter since they don't unlock anything. Oh, and I also don't think experience points and leveling up characters belongs in a Sonic game, either.

Don't get me wrong, the Daytime stages are fun after you master them, but the difficulty curve of learning how to play the game well, especially with boosting (but for me, even WITHOUT) is annoying, and of course, after not playing the game for a long period of time, I basically have to relearn the game if I actually want to enjoy it more.

Also, special stages in most Sonic games. Especially in 2, CD, 4, and Advance 2 (I haven't played the other Advance games).

Oh, and the most frustrating Sonic experience for me is a four-way tie between Spinball, 06's last level, 06's mach speed areas, and Sonic Labyrinth.

Sonic Pinball Party's story....

Mission 53 of Sonic Adventure DX..Just get to fuck, managed to do it on the Xbox but man, it's too brutal.

Dr. Robotnik battle in Dr. Robotnik's mean bean machine.

Getting S rank for "The end of the world" stage in Sonic 06.

Dark Gaia fight at the end of Sonic Unleashed, I hate chip, so I was like "WTF  " when he goes from being an annoying talking Chihuahua to a giant stone Transformer...and even then he still needs Sonic's help...just why? And the battle itself...boring!

Glitching the in-game achievement tracker in Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, kinda Sonic related I guess.

Untouchable achievement in Sonic 4, not really as hard when I found the pattern to the final boss in the Egg Station zone :P

Buying Sonic 2006, being hyped to death for the best Sonic game since Adventure 1, and starting it up. At first I was like...

And then I was like...

Also, I do enjoy Unleashed, but another moment was when my 360 got the Red Ring, so the only way I could play Unleashed and Gears 2 (when those games first came out) was through a friend. He came over, we hooked up his 360. I booted up Unleashed. It was great. Then I got smacked with the werehog. It was hard, I died a bunch on the first level, but I won. And it wasn't THAT bad, but I was hoping for an even day/night/day/night style of progression. Of course what I got was day/town/day/town/night/shitty QTE fest/town/more town/MORE town/Night. And by that point, it was either play an hour of Gears 2 or call it a night. So that fucking enraged me. BEYOND that point, I fell in love with pretty much the rest of the game, but that and 2 other points where I didn't have enough medals just pissed me off.

Few more that I did not see here

That Rouge treasue hunting level. I forget the name, but it pissed me off to no fucking end. Security Hall, I think? I had no fucking idea there was an upper level.

Final Rush...at first. The whole game never emphasized grinding on rails and here is the level that made 10 years olds shit bricks. Sure, Sky Rail was rail heavy, but it was a kitten compared to this fucking tiger. I am relieved that I aced this stage and no, I never played hard mode.

Last Cannon...specifically the Knuckles' section. The treasure hunting stages were bad enough, but tell me that I wasn't the only one who had no idea about that damned necklace and SOL? I thought Sega was seriously screwing with me.

Dark Gaia/Perfect Dark Gaia.

Its hard as fuck. That would be OK, if it wasn't for the fact that it was so goddamn monotonous. Dark Gaia controlled horribly and every move had a massively delayed reaction. To this day I haven't beaten it because I can't be pissed to put up with it.

Sonic 2 Game Gear was one of the hardest hand held games I've ever played, it took me SOOOOOOO long just to beat the first boss fight. It was so cheap and hard with those damn bouncing balls and the antlion boss pushed you back right into them if you jumped on him. I swear when I was little that boss made me cry in frustration. Then there's the damn hang glider. It's easy and I love it now but when I was little I had no idea how to get the thing to fly and stay in the air and keep moving at a fast enough pace to reach the other side of the cliff. So for years I found myself eternally trapped on Sky High Zone Act 1. Sonic 3D Blast had a crap ton of controller throwing on the ground frustrating moments for me as a kid. When I was little the wall springs in Rusty Ruin Zone Act 2 were horrible and I could not for the life of me get up that wall, its easy now but back then it was horrible. Also the floating platforms in that level were so hard to jump on and stay on without falling.

Then there was Spring Stadium Zone with its spears hitting you from the ground and the damn orange Flickie who was retarded and would make you die jumping around in a area filled with ground spears. That boss was really hard for me as a kid as well, and the orange bird made my life miserable in Volcano Valley Zone as well jumping in lava and making it hard to catch him without dying. There was also that section in Gene Gadget Zone Act 2 where if you got hit and lost all your Flickies they would be wandering around in a scripted slide area making it extremely hard to regather them. The final boss after collecting all the Chaos Emeralds was very hard for me at that age as well. Sonic Spinball was really hard for me too and still is, I would be stuck on Toxic Caves or the Lava Powerhouse level forever. If I was lucky I made it to The Machine which was way to hard for me to complete as a kid.

Sonic 2's Metropolis Zone was hard back in the day for the fact you had so many sucker punching Shellcracker badniks and Slicers throwing crap at you the moment you ran up to the next area on a corkscrew causing you to fall all the way back down again. We can't forget the Asteron star Badniks shooting at us at random armies too, especially when running on corkscrews also at times causing you to fall off. It's lava sections were hard for me as a kid along with Act 2 and 3's rotating corkscrews you had to run around on. In Act 3 was a really steep wall you had to spindash or run really fast on and I couldn't get up there easily as a kid. I was stuck on it for a while until I figured out I could do a wall jump when I reached the height to jump off and get to the ledge. Casino Night embarrassingly to say now was a little bit harder for me as a kid, the bouncers you run into I had to spend more time working my way over to reach the other side I needed and I also found myself being crushed to death a lot by the blue up and down square platforms. I got a lot of time overs in that level too forgetting the time and abusing the slot machines for rings.

I was obsessed with getting the jackpots back then it was like a high. I also drowned a lot in Aquatic Ruin as a kid because I was to impatient to look and stand at air bubbles, so I tried to avoid falling under water at all costs. Mystic Cave Zone and Oil Ocean were horrible back then too, Mystic Cave for its pit falls and easy to be crushed areas and its Flasher and Crawlton badniks constantly popping out of no where and hurting Sonic. If you played as Tails he would jump on the switch for the bridge and make Sonic fall off or miss the switch at times falling into a pit and dying. Tails also royally screwed you over in the Special Stages making them way harder then they already were alone. Oil Ocean for its Aquis badnik constantly popping out of no where and killing you. They literally would travel in gangs of 2's and 3's and shoot stuff at Sonic and fly at and around him they're impossible to pass by without getting hit at times.

Ugh Wing Fortress pissed me off as a kid so much and I almost always got game overs on that level. I would constantly fall to my death at portions of that level that required either hanging on a pole and steeply jumping to floating rotating platforms and missing completely falling. This was fixed and more flexible in Sonic 3 and Knuckles but was super stiff in Sonic 2. Jumping across platforms that went inward and disappearing for a few seconds making you fall was another thing that was super hard for me back in the day. That damn lazer beam boss too good lord was I stuck on that thing. The lazer constantly zapping you with the spiked rotating platforms to stand on, if I wasn't being zapped I was being stabbed and losing all the rings I had. Death Egg was so hard as a kid too, no rings and fighting two insanely hard bosses. I would get game overs on the Mecha Sonic boss alone and not even reaching Eggman and his giant Mech.

When I finally did beat him I would then die and get game overs on the Eggman Mech boss instead. What is worse is when you die you have to fight the Mecha Sonic boss again. Sonic 3's "barrel boss" enough said. :P That was the breaking point for me in Sonic 3. I was stuck on the barrel FOREVER and used to die getting time overs and sometimes rarely it'd glitch and I'd have the barrel crush me to death. I wanted to strangle Tails when I would see him glitch and fall through the barrel and wished I could do the same. That thing even made me cry at times. I sometimes fell asleep holding the controller in my hands trying for hours to figure out how to get past the barrel. I had no idea you had to press up and down simtaneously.....I thought you had to jump up and down on it to make it go higher and would make it go higher and jump to push it down more and would try to as quickly as humanly possible get in that small opening at the bottom to get to the other side.

It wasn't until I went to a friends house to play Sega Genesis with when I figured it out because he was one of the few who actually was able to figure it out almost instantly and showed me. I never felt so stupid before in my life lol. Flying Battery, Sandopolis and Lava Reef were really hard for me as a kid too and I found myself stuck on them forever. Flying Battery I just always died on for whatever reason and I used to get extremely excited when I got to Sandopolis Zone only to die a lot in Act 2 and get stuck in a lot of areas. Lava Reef was just hard for me as a kid because of the many gimmicks it has and lava segments. Sonic 1 Labyrinth Zone was another drown and game over fest and the instant spike kills in that game did not help my case. I died a lot in Marble Zone and for the longest time hated that level to death, which ironically is one of my favorite ones now from that game.

The final Special Stage for Sonic 3 alone to become Super Sonic was hard for me at the time because I didn't realize you just had to run into the blue spheres and turn sections into rings at the time. Sonic Adventure 2 Levels such as Mission Street, Death Chamber, Eternal Engine, Meteor Herd and Crazy Gadget were so damn hard for me when I was 12 years old. Mission Street and Eternal Engine were the worst Tails levels ever, Eternal Engine you have every robot known to man shooting at you in that stage and Tails Mech had less health than Eggman's. Not to mention the floors and doors you aren't supposed to shoot because you can get sucked out into space and die hanging around in areas where you need to hit switches or shoot enemies making you almost always shoot the floors and doors and die. Mission Street was just a royal pain in the ass, all the jumping you had to do with Tails measly Mech was not fun at all and being shot at while trying to reach other parts of the road.

Death Chamber was so boring and long and it took forever to find the keys and when I finally did I had to fight that stupid Ghost boss and he was extremely hard and annoying. Meteor Herd was no fun either because of how large the space level was for finding the emeralds. The hint signs were backwards so I couldn't have any help and the gravity physics did not help. It was just super boring and long and was happy to have it over with when I finally found all 3 emerald shards. Crazy Gadget's gravity puzzle section was really hard and threw me off at first as a kid. I found myself hitting the wrong switches or taking the wrong routes and being sucked into space and dying. Egg Quarters, Security Hall, and Mad Space were controller throwing frustrating for me. Especially Security Hall man were the Chaos Emeralds a pain in the ass to find in that level.

The only good thing out of that was hearing Eggman lose his cool and scream at the top of his lungs at you. Egg Quarters sucked because of that Beetle Droid that always hit lazers at me. Mad Space just like Knuckle's was extremely long, boring and hard. The gravity for the little planets didn't help the case and the hints were all backwards making me take longer. Team Chaotix in Heroes sucked, I hated finding things in that game and their Rail Canyon level was extremely hard. Team Rose in English sucked could not Stand Big's voice at all and I felt my intellect drop every time he talked. Team Rose's gameplay was just so kiddish and slow to my liking and I felt like I was a 5 year old again. The scripted loops for Team Sonic and Team Dark almost always had me die because of bugs and glitches. The controls for switching rails in that game were controller throwing frustrating and I was stuck on Rail Canyon for the longest time because of this, I absolutely hate that level.

Sonic Adventure 1 was easy until you had to play as Big the Effin Cat. I could not catch that god damn frog and his story was the only thing preventing me from getting 100% and the final story for YEARS! Yes YEARS, fishing for that stupid frog was broken, not fun and I could not understand its logic. As for Shadow the Hedgehog Lost Impact, The Doom, and Central City were the worst and most frustrating levels in that game. Central City's Dark Mission was damn near impossible and I swear I barely completely it by a thread. Finding and destroying those damn Gun Mechs in a giant confusing city in a small amount of time was not fun. Especially since those Mechs were harder and took longer to destroy and kill. The Doom was controller throwing annoying and I was stuck on it forever, the longest time I spent running around in that level was 2 freaking hours no lie. When I almost gave up completely I found the last stupid researcher.

The Hero Mission for that level is the worst, finding all the researchers is the most nerve wrecking thing ever. Especially because the Ark is so big and confusing and you have to backtrack in order to find other researchers because of walls being blown into creating new paths and short cuts. Lost Impact takes 30 minutes or longer that level is seriously extremely long and boring. Finding all the Chaos was hard as hell and when I was younger was stuck on that level because I had no idea where the hell the last Chaos experiment was located at. Like someone mentioned earlier he's in this ridiculous spot you'd never would've thought he'd be located at. Sonic 06's kiss Cutscene and Sonic's laughter in that game made me want to stab my ears and eyes out. Out of all the things in that game the SonXElise crap and Sonic's horrible laughter were the icing on my cake of frustrations. Eggmanland of Sonic Unleashed was the breaking point in that game. It was both welcomed and hated because finally a Modern day game that was challenging and hard and hated because of that lol.

Sonic 1:

Labyrinth Zone. I have never beaten this stage. I've given up! You don't even have to hit the boss and I STILL can't win! Also, why the hell are there fireballs shooting at you underwater?! Spikes, spike ball and chains, orbinauts, random water height changes, orbinauts, trick platforms made to crush you, ORBINAUTS, an insanely hard boss which is just made to fuck you over (Either you drown, get hit by the random robot, get speared, or get hit by a FIREBALL UNDERWATER. Pick your death!), and do you know what's the worst part? Starlight Zone is soooo easy....

Sonic 2:

I'm not a big Sonic 2 person. It comes off as average to me. But I have some main gripes.

Special Stages: They're not a bad idea, but sheesh... if you play with Tails, you're doomed to fail!

Oil Ocean: Fucking stalker seahorses! That is all!!!

Metropolis: Everything about this level is oozing with pure hatred for the poor player. The star badniks alone will make anyone reconsider if they really want to go through the level. Not to mention that there's a THIRD act. When I walked past the goal post in the second act, I could have cried right then and there. I should have turned off the Genesis... because it wasn't going to happen! And it didn't, Eggman totally killed me. XD

I'm not even going to comment on Silver Sonic.

Sonic 3:

Barrel. Barrel. Barrel. BARREL.

Who the hell thought of that thing?!?!? I wasted 20 minutes on that! I managed to successfully do it and then die before reaching the boss! It just wasn't fair!!!

Sonic Adventure:

Sky Deck: How many times was I flung out into the midst of the sky? I spent 29 minutes and so many lives on that level.

Egg Viper: Don't lie. You know on your first play through of that boss you died when Eggman crashed into the platform. YOU ALWAYS DO ON THE FIRST TIME AND THEN YOU SCREEEAAAM.

Sonic Adventure 2:

I ADORE this game, but man did it cause me a world of hurt as a kid.

Death Chamber: Big, confusing, giant ghosts, little ghosts, and yet wonderful music. I hated this place. It was pretty much Egg Quarters gone horribly, horribly wrong. Then when it come to finding the chao and the hard mode I wanted to pull my hair out.

Eternal Engine: Tails' levels in Sonic Adventure 2 were nothing compared to Eggman's (Minus Hidden Base, that place is fun!) and Eternal Engine was a horrible companion to Cosmic Wall (or is it a companion to Lost Colony?). Artificial Chaos, dynamite packs made to trap you, descents into laser traps, and everything hitting you made me HATE this place. I still do. I always will.

Crazy Gadget: Oh. My. Goodness. This whole level is made of terror, but you don't know what terror is until you reach the dreaded color block room. Eggman said I wouldn't make it through there alive; he was right.

Cannon's Care: *shudders and cries*

The Biolizard: The floating! The freaking floating!!! Well, at least you can get creamed over and over to good music...

Sonic Heroes: The day I realized it wasn't a good game. Sad day indeed.

Sonic Unleashed:

I'm one of the few people who thought Unleashed wasn't that difficult. Sure Eggmanland was hard initially (75 minutes on one level in a platforming game... insane), but after a few plays, I noticed that it was a fun stage and doable. Still hard though. The pipe balancing, that one insane QTE, and the coaster of doom are still contenders to this day. Hence I haven't achieved my beloved S rank (But A is still pretty good).

Dragon Road Night Act 2 is horrific. Balancing and jumping can be a little difficult as werehog, but when you throw in a carrying element it simply becomes unfair. I've only beaten this level once because it's simply tedious and a frustrating pain. Also the level is circular. I don't like circular levels because when I make it to the end I feel as though I've been cheated.

I like Arid Sands Night because it's an easy night level. I went in fearing whatever balancing challenge I'd have to face and there were none! I was so happy! However the real challenge is the nightmare that awaits you if you decide to go up the stairs. What stairs? You know the stairs. You decide to ascend them just to see what's there and then you walk into a trap. But this is not a mere blockage. This is a swarm of enemies, including the wizards who replenish health, that never seem to cease. It's made to kill you if not prepared. I wasn't and I was NOT happy when I died.

The hornet enemies. They suck. Simply put.

Dark Gaia. WORST. SONIC. BOSS. EVER. Who decided on making this slow golem thing? That will ALWAYS be hit by the laser! And then when you're Sonic it's barely possible to evade traps to reach Dark Gaia in time. I HATE this boss. Especially since the Egg Dragoon was so fun.

Yasmin. She's not worth saving.

Sonic Colors made me upset by how average it was alone. Then I saw the yellow spring levels. They weren't fun, just a tedious way to bring back a classic level gimmick. I could also say how much I was frustrated by Cube, but that's because I'm silly and tend to Cube myself to death by mistake. =P

I had the feeling we would take a nightmarish trip through tough spots..

+Sonic - Metropolis Zone - This stage is nail bitingly hard, but insanely fun.

+Sonic Adventure 2 - Playing as Tails, and braving through harder mode.

On the not so fun side, Cannon's Core, I seriously cannot obtain an A, and this will never stop driving me nuts.

+Sonic Rush - Obtaining Emerald's 6&7 (tough) And 7 is the most notorious one yet!

+Sonic 06' - Fighting the Tornado (whomever made it through this stage w/o dying, we applaud you!)

Braving the Emerald Coast (and the speed run). Silver's tomb puzzles, I feel sorry for the guy.

What was the point of the Soleanna coins?

+Sonic Unleashed - Eggmanland - Just braving through without dying.

Taking on the city as the Werehog, (fun). Until you have to take down a baddie on a rooftop, high above the cityscape, one misstep and its bye-bye.

And the side quests (saving Yasmin) seriously why? I wish Sonic Team could tell us why!? XP

A few more things that pissed me off.

1. Big's fishing when playing it the first time. Every time I tried to catch Froggy, he would let go. It wound up getting to the point of sheer frustration that I hadn't felt since the Carnival Night barrel. Then I figured out the trick, and it became a cinch…after five no-saving playings!

2. Sandopolis, Act 2. Not the slides, but as Knuckles. There is a little puzzle that only he could do. You enter a corridor, and there's a switch that opens the door across. You slide it, and you glide across, but it closes fast every time. It took me a few weeks before I finally figured out how to solve it, but it was really frustrating!

3. Marble Garden. As Knuckles, I tried beating the face so I could fall down and continue down the path that Sonic and Tails would follow, but he jumped so low that I couldn't reach. Then I noticed the arrow pointing up, and I grumbled at why I didn't see it!

4. The boss in Labyrinth Zone, Act 3. I also had trouble with this boss and couldn't beat this game for a long time cleanly. I would actually activate the level select just to beat the rest of the game! Now I find it to be pretty simple to figure out. Just be patient and don't get hit!

Oh, and another thing.

I didn't find (or even know about) Knuckles' air necklace until long after I finished Cannon's Core. Meaning that on the first time through I had to to do it without the necklace.

Yeeeeeeeaaah.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. Poor Knux drowned more time than I can count there.

Anyhow here's a few rage quits...

Sonic 2 Final Boss fight. No rings... yeah.

Sonic 3 the barrel...

Sonic Heroes. The Chaotix "Find the lost chao" mission in the forest and "put out the flames Mission." Also Rail Canyon. Died so many time there because of grinding glitch >_<

Sonic 06... Just about EVERY Mach speed zone.

Sonic Chronicles. THE DAMN 3 Swat bots in Eggman's base. WHO THE HECK THOUGHT UP THAT FIGHT? It's not like it isn't hard enough to KO one, no, you have to KO 3 IN ONE TURN. I think that one likely the maddest I ever got at a Sonic game... Still need to beat it XD

Sonic Unleashed. EggmanLand... Still need to beat it... The Chu-nan night where you have to balance on a beam while holding a keystone. Also Empire City. The balancing on the spiked beams...Oh ans the bees... Yeah..

Yet another one I somehow managed to erase from my memory was playing as Amy in the Egg Rocket level in Sonic Advance.

We all know that Amy in that game was intentionally the 'hard mode' of all the characters, but getting through that stage with her was a pain. It doesn't help matters that the level gradually cuts off as you advance further up the level and that there's a time limit. But just when I manage to get all the way up to the end, I can't even get on the platform and jump into the rocket all the while with what remains of the time limit.

Call me pathetic all you want, it won't matter to me as much as not being able to finish it, period.

Ohhh this could take a while, Now let me see.

- When you remove all the blocks protecting the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1 Special Stages only to then end up falling onto a GOAL ring. The 3rd and last one are especially annoying considering I seem to suck at the ones in an open area.

- This is more of an example of being angry at myself, but I always seem to forget the route that pretty much skips over most of Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 so I usually end up going through that horrible level all the way. Trust me it gets annoying considering Sonic 1 is probably my most memorized of the classic games.

- Getting a perfect but not the Chaos Emerald in any Special Stage in Sonic3&K.

- Hitting the wrong time sign or hitting an obstacle just as your about to warp in Sonic CD. Happens to me alot.

- Transforming into Super Sonic in 3&K when all i want to do is the Insta-shield. As I'm not a huge fan of Super Sonic as prety much all challenge is removed. It's a great little reward but a tad bit overpowered. But I suppose it's the point. Also this one is also more aimed at my forgetfullness rather than a fault of the game.

- I hate that hang-glider in the Game Gear version of Sonic 2 with a passion. The controls just don't seem to work in the slightest.

- When the Light Dash doesn't work in Sonic Heroes. The worst case is in Lost Jungle with Team Sonic after you press the switch by the spiral tree. It just locks onto the one Ring, Wave good-bye to that A rank.

- Some of the ramps in SA2. Mainly the ones at the start of City Escape. Not really a problem but I'm a perfectionist when it comes to SA2 so I have to nail those jumps. Also when your grinding the golden gate bridge's rail in Radical Highway if you time it wrong you don't get the 1000 points of the jump.

- Many people have already said it so why not? Fucking Mad Space!!

- The Mach Speed section in Crisis City. It's almost impossible not to get hit there and rings play a huge part in that levels S Rank.

- Fighting Iblis as Sonic or Shadow. That fight is so redudant, I was not best pleased on my first playthrough seeing the loading screen for that boss again as Shadow.

- Finally Act 4 of Aquarium Park in Colours. That Octopus is probably the hardest chase scene in a Sonic game. For me anyway. Seeing him again in Terminal Velocity made me want to throw up.

Thats pretty much all i can think of at the moment. Annoying franchise is Sonic but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well the Sonic series isn't one full of much challenge (It does have it's moments though) so most of my frustrations came from downright anger at how crappy a game was. A mix of the two though that always hits me as a pain was playing Sonic Heroes on the PS2, That homing attack was so unstable it was ridicolous. I guarentee you that at least 3/5 of my deaths came from that stupid homing attack screwing up. Also the barrel was a pain until I learned the secret.

For me, the biggest slap in the face sonic moment was in 2006 when I was looking forward to Sonic 06 all year long and then I bought an Xbox 360 just to play Sonic 06 and it turned out to be a glitchy mess. Then a few months later we get Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Nintendo Wii which turned out to be a better game. Yeah, what a let down and waste of a bunch of money. <_<
