Sonic Generations : General Hacking Thread

Orly? Stopped reading there and also

Anyway whatever you said in your post, I find it hard how it's hard to understand my dissapointment even if you have a different opinion about the list. Personally I think me and others are quite reasonable on this matter, but anyway, whatever floats your boat mate

Its the fact that its being as touted as a reason not to get the game. The level selection is not bad at all. It could do with a little more variety, but what we have is a collection of the most popular stages in the series (yes, people tend to gravitate towards familiar tropes...or Sonic Team just made stages of a particulat trope better than others).

Generations as a whole is a double edged sword (the main game at least), because there is no way they could have pleased everyone with level selection. I guess they're trying to mitigate this by allowing you to play through classic stages as Modern Sonic, with a whole new perspective, and play through modern stages as Classic Sonic, with a whole new perspective. Not only that, they're changing the level design of most stages and replacing it with new level design, whilst keeping all the iconic segments in it.

I knew people were gonna be upset but holy shit people are acting like this is the worst game in the world because of shit like 'they picked Crisis City instead of Kingdom Highway!' Which, I'd argue is because they already picked Sky Sanctuary and Kingdom Valley is too same-y thus they went for the next best thing, but I digress.

I honestly thought there would be more people like me who actually really liked this list, but hey this is the Sonic fanbase right? Always referred to as impossible to please?

Really I think the main complaint that has merit is having no Sonic CD stage, but more people seem to be pissed off at other things. There's still downloadable content.. *shrugs*

Aside from Jaouad who outright said he wasn't going to buy the game primarily because of the level list, I can't remember anyone here who has seriously dogged the entire game as a whole because of it. You know what I saw? People getting mad at the level list and then harping on Sega about it, and a lot of that was cleared up when the icon assets and code came in. What happened wasn't isn't a slandering of the entire game. Just about everyone here is going to buy the game and shit rainbows when they play it or see some fanservice or look at an awesome cutscene. Your claim seems as exaggerated as you claim the detractors are.

And Kingdom Valley is too same-y to Sky Sanctuary? Wut? One is a waterlogged and ruined Medieval/Renaissance-looking kingdom under cloudy weather. Sky Sanctuary is about bright skies and white puffy clouds and ambiguous, yellow colored ruins and Eggrobos and shiz.

I do agree, though-- We are impossible to collectively please most of the time, and there's always DLC, but in light of the revelation that Casino Night is just a mini-game, I'm not holding my breath that we're gonna get entirely new levels and missions.

Can I join you on this one?

Gonna have to put away the popcorn for now. Mods are getting a little tense for all of us leaving crumbs all over this clean topic.

i mean

how do you guys hate him so much

he's so fluffy

For the level list. I'm okay with this. Picking any other stages would seem weird, because these are the most memorable. These are the ones ingrained in the collective consciousness as SONIC stages. Yeah, you may have wanted other stages, but they sure as fuck wouldn't have made other people happy, and generally, you'll be in the minority.

This isn't the game for Sonic fans. There never has been, and there never will be. Sega needs to make games that appeal to EVERYONE, not just us. Not to do so would be the stupidest move ever. Yeah, Classic Sonic is in, but people OUTSIDE the Sonic fanbase remember Classic Sonic also.

I mean my god. Most people here seem okay with the stages, but some of you are just whining for reasons worse than green eyes. It's fine not to like the list, that's cool, but there are not any other iconic stages. None. They're all in here. Stop complaining that they missed "such a classik staeg" when no, they didn't, and you're just more attached to a stage than everyone else and Sega is not marketing this directly to YOU.

Also pretty much thank god no Sonic CD stages. Nobody knows about that game hardly, it'd be a waste of a level, nobody would know where it came from and it would make no sense.

I want the Werehog too. :D He gets so much hate. It's probably only going to be for a part of one stage or a boss.

True dat.

I'll bring some Skittles later, they don't make much of a mess.

I honestly don't know why some feel so irritated. Honestly, I'm pretty damned disappointed that the game won't have Ice Cap, Hydrocity, Frog Forest, Red Mountain,(duh) Windy Valley (double duh) and maybe CD stages, and got Ocean Palace instead, but I'm pretty happy with this list. In fact, I'm surprised Sonic 4 will be included in this game. Turns out it's... Canon?

Either way, I'm pretty excited to hear about all the extraction from the demo, nonetheless.

And maybe Speed Highway will pull off some strange Stardust Speedway feel?

And yes!!! Adding the Werehog is going to be fucking amazing. It'll be weird for Classic Sonic, though. I'd like to see how they pull that one off.

And I knew there were going to be Elemental Shields, I just knew it.

And a DLC of Casino Night Zone Minigame, and other countless stuff (including additional Acts of levels we already have and possibly new Zones, oh my)..

If Sonic 06 had their bit of DLC, this thing will be full of it.

So Fuckyea, I'm even more hyped up for this game.

EDIT:

And may I say that it looks amazing so far. The level selection isn't as varied as I expected, but it looks pretty cool and carefully made, to be honest. If the level design was good in GHZ, great in City Escape, then the rest will be good, great, awesome, outstanding, and AMAZING.

EDIT 2: ... Why did I confuse Splash Hill with Seaside, I'll never know. I'm just so baffled over all the awesomeness this game will have. xD

The Werehog is stock leftover from Unleashed.

They also use completely different life icons than the ones in this game.

Green Hill: Tropical jungle area. Obvious, everything we expected it to be and more.

Chemical Plant: Industrial plant area. Since the 3DS version was getting Casino Night, this was the next obvious choice. I have a lot of memories here, with the high speed sections and that one water area everyone knows about.

Sky Sanctuary: Ancient ruins area. This wasn't my first choice to represent Sonic 3 & Knuckles (that winner goes to Ice Cap Zone) however this selection makes sense from a story perspective. Good to see this level revisited.

Speed Highway: Nightime city area. Not as obvious as Emerald Coast would have been, in my personal opinion, but thinking about blasting through the city at night with the Hedgehog Engine rendering it makes my mouth water! This should be awesome.

City Escape: Sunny urban area (California version). This one was obvious. It's difference in locale and time of day however should separate it enough from Speed Highway. Looking forward to playing this.

Seaside Hill: Beach ruins area. Not sure how I felt about this at first, but looking back I see a TON of potential for this area. Plenty of opportunity to expand on the ruins and beach elements, as well as the possibility of becoming a water level. The only thing making this seem like a Green Hill knockoff is the checker patterns, and they can more than make up for it with the other elements.

Crisis City: Molten lava area. I can see why they chose this, since there's been a lack of "red" in this level selection, and we all knew that it would either come down to Crisis City or Kingdom Valley. Kingdom Valley would have been good, but I think Crisis City, with it's lava sections, giant tornado and fire everywhere should be able to bring enough unique distinction.

Rooftop Run: Sunny urban area (Europe version). Haters gonna hate, I think this will be VERY different in visual style and gameplay variation than City Escape. I'm going to climb up that giant clock tower as Classic Sonic and LIKE it! Just as long as we don't stay there for the night.

Planet Wisp: Forest construction area. Most everyone loved Planet Wisp when it was first showcased, me included. Beautiful glowing flora and a huge orange construction zone to explore will no doubt leave me satisfied.

Am I the only person to LOVE this level selection, in spite of my favorites not being picked?

Daaaaamn, this is crazy.

I'm liking the look of all this info, stages bosses etc.

But this has probably thrown a MAJOR wrench into SEGA's plans. I wonder how they're gonna react to this.

I'm fine with the stage list as long as SEGA finds a way to make them individual, rather then making it look like copy pasta everywhere.

I have a bit of a hope spot after seeing the City Escape stages, after all. :3

Regarding the rest of the leaks, I'm very satisfied with the bosses, happy that each zone gets five acts, as unlike with Colors, there's enough main zones

But we won't be getting stupid Mini-Acts excluded from the Main-Stages,since there will be Missions.

The Set-up is sounding more like Unleashed, where the Mini-Acts get's a disctintive Gimmick. I hope those gimmicks will be nods to other games not on the list. Like I said maybe Layouts.SRA had a hidden island resembling the First Level of Rush.

You wanna know the funny thing? Despite the fact that quite a few people disapprove of some of the level choices, I think you guys will love the game anyway XD Why? Because they recreate the levels with interesting new concepts.

Take City Escape for example. That new skateboard power-up looks like great fun. There's some very nice platforming sections in Classic Sonic, and some nice alternate pathways with Modern Sonic (I actually think they've given us MORE freedom with the Modern Sonic City Escape than with the original SA2 City Escape).

And of course....the truck. Not only has it received some crazy upgrade in the chase scene with Modern Sonic (buzzsaws and rocket boosters anyone?) but it also works as a nice unique twist and obstacle in Classic Sonic's gameplay.

You see, it's stuff like that which could potentially make every level in the game fresh and fun to play.

As long as the gameplay is fun and varied(Which the information indicates it to be), I really don't mind.

Hey guys, after all this information, has your excitement increased or decreased? I am more excited than ever now! THIS GAME SOUNDS AWESOME! :D

I'm both excited and alittle disappointed at the same time. I was disappointed about the fact that the list that was leaked earlier was true but I'm starting to warm up to it now and I'm looking forward to all the extra content and replay value in the game. :D

I really don't get all the negative reps for not liking the list. One simple post about me having friends who probably are going to buy the game alone got me -4 reps, like wtf.

I mean I am perfectly fine with those who like the list and i'm not calling them out on that either. But of course i'm dealing with fans here.

The way I look at it is that the stage list isn't just bad, it's worse than that. It's not just totally missing the point, it doesn't even come close to "what could've been". It's just totally not well managed in my opinion. I think CARBO really said it best

The level list is samey and there's little to no variety. Four city stages. Three basic "nature" stages. The only real standouts in this list are Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary.

For those who are dissapointed in the stages, just think of the team's design philosiphy. To add things fresh and new and surprise players. Add that to the shields and other things and it seems that gameplay wise it will be very varied.

Classic Sonic's mug is adorable. Then you scroll down the page and see that there's a slice in his gut where they decided to put a rotating joint. Then you get a bit perturbed. xP

To answer the question, I think I'm naturally excited regardless of disappointment, (Werehog icon being a leftover fucking infuriates me). This game is so packed with content that its hard not to be impressed. All of the characters, the co-op sequences, and even more glorious CGI await us. And when we get another gameplay trailer, all of my animosity will be absent and this conversation will have never happened. xP
