Sonic CD in Generations

Recommended Posts

If anyone wants to avoid spoilers due to the leaks, don't read this thread. Otherwise, click the spoiler box to proceed.

It turns out that according to the leaked level list, there will be no Sonic CD level in the game. I can ignore the other flaws with the level list because I actually like most of the choices. It's just that Generations won't feel complete to me without a Sonic CD level. It doesn't matter how obscure Sonic CD is, it's a main series game that deserves a level in Generations as much as the rest.

And why should obscurity be a factor? Did anyone not see the posters of obscure Sonic characters in City Escape? Clearly Generations is being made by people who know the series well enough to recognize the existence of Sonic CD. The leaks even confirm that Metal Sonic is a boss in Generations. Where would such a boss take place if not a Sonic CD level? Sure, they could squeeze Metal Sonic into Green Hill, Chemical Plant or Sky Sanctuary, but why conjure up Metal Sonic for Generations but nothing else from Sonic CD?

You could argue that Sonic Generations already has time travel and Sonic CD's inclusion would be redundant, but there's a way around that. Just have the Sonic CD level take place entirely in Sonic CD's present without any past or future signposts. The past and future signposts were necessary in Sonic CD because Robotnik had taken over Little Planet's future. In Generations, Classic and Modern Sonic have to save the future for the entire world. Even if they both saved Little Planet's future, it would all be in vain because the future for the rest of the world would still be endangered. Classic Sonic could always come back to Sonic CD's time once Generations is over and rectify Little Planet's future as he was going to anyway.

Those are my two cents on Sonic CD for Generations. If I were to choose a Sonic CD level, I would pick Collision Chaos. My original choice was Stardust Speedway, but since the leaked level list already has enough city levels, I'd go with Collision Chaos instead as it's a pinball level. Collision Chaos was also the first in-game appearance of Metal Sonic, the Metal Sonic holograms in Palmtree Panic Past notwithstanding.

It's very possible that they'll include the Metal Sonic race, complete with Stardust Speedway. It would be kind of odd if they didn't, considering we know for a fact that

Metal Sonic is a boss.

While CD is tied with S3&K as my favorite in the series, I have to say I'd be fine with them simply including the Metal Sonic race. It's the most iconic part of the game, easily.

I just wonder if they'll use the Japanese or American music for the race if that happens.

Personally, while I think both tracks are good, this just sounds more urgent and intense.

Considering the way they've divvied up the eras, adding CD would only ensure that the Dreamcast and Modern eras got more levels per game to compensate for the imbalance, and I'm pretty sure such a decision wouldn't have gone down so well. I agree with Dio; getting the three most representative games of each major era was the best way to go about it. Though frankly, if I had it may way, CD and ShtH would have been there on principle, and S3&K would have been divided up into two separate titles. I wouldn't have grouped the games into eras either. Just give every entry two stages and be done with it.

Obscurity is a factor because hey guess what, this is a game combining the most iconic stages from Sonic's history. Little easter eggs are a different story compared to full levels. CD is not iconic, it's not even good. It's obscure, very little people know about it, and nobody would get it.

"Iconic" or not, Sonic CD is more than often, by many, many people, considered one of the best Sonic games of all time.

It's a main title entry, only marred by the fact that Sega CD never took off. It's appeared in Gems Collection, which spread it to a new audience. It even introduced Amy and Metal Sonic as iconic characters.

But hey, since you're using the argument of "iconic" and "good", Sonic 06 is virtually disowned by Sega, removed from sales listings and online marketplaces, and is often considered the worst Sonic game of all time. It was one of the lowest grossing Sonic games when it came out, none of the staff could identify it as something they were proud that they made and it's ridiculed for being a glitchy mess with a retarded plot. The most anyone remembers it for is for everything it did wrong, and even though they might actually make it good, I don't think most people would look at that return charitably.

I'm honestly surprised general public would have preferred to see Sonic 06 return, but not CD, if that's what this list was completely based off of. Sonic CD should not be excluded from 20 years of Sonic history, especially when it introduced two of the series' biggest characters.

The level list has been revealed,as have bosses....

Bosses could take place on their respected levels, for example:

M.Sonic>>Green Hills>>C.Sonic>>Green Hills>>Boss(Metal sonic: Star Dust Speedway)>>M.Sonic>>Casino night zone>>

I mean Eggmanland wasn't one of the levels chosen BUT you ARE gonna fight the Egg Dragoon, which took place in Eggmanland, just a theory....

And in case.....I called it!!!!

Just because you don't like Sonic CD doesn't mean it shouldn't have a level in Generations. For instance, Sonic 06. What makes Sonic 06 more deserving than Sonic CD? Do you like Sonic 06? Really, what makes it more deserving? They are both main series games, only one game is well-received by most critics whereas the other one was universally panned on release.

And Sonic CD is iconic. I have seen countless fan-art of Sonic racing Metal Sonic on Stardust Speedway. That's an iconic moment. Don't even think about trying to dispute it. And "nobody would get it"? What a piss poor justification for omitting Sonic CD. You are aware this game is also being made for the general public. They aren't going to get half of the levels that are already in the game. What does it matter if "nobody would get" Sonic CD? It's more levels, more fanservice, and more of a way to introduce people to Sonic CD.

'06 on the other hand, has far more reasons to be in, including but not limited to being newer, being more memorable (even if for the wrong reason), and being generally the best choice for another Modern stage (unleashed and colors being the other two) as the other choice was ShTH.

The funny thing with this is that the only "iconic" Sonic stage from that game isn't even in Generations.

It's not all based on what's iconic clearly.

Think about it like this.

Everyone knows about '06.

People in the Sonic Fanbase know about CD. Which is a lot less people.

CD has nothing iconic outside of that ONE Metal Sonic race, which hell, will more than likely be in there anyways!

And yes, most people WILL know the older levels. They're generally pretty classic games. Not the super young kids but everyone else yeah.

It would also break up the 3/3/3 thing they have going on. I'd rather not have fucking CD kick out 1, 2 or 3. That's just objectively bullshit.

Here's the thing. There's no reason to include CD outside of Metal Sonic, and he's already in. None of the stages are iconic, unlike all of the ones already in.

CD's only reason is Metal Sonic, and that you think that Generations could use even more ridiculous amounts of fanservice, even though half of the world wouldn't even know what the fuck it was.

I have to disagreed with that. If you ask any person who's ever played Sonic what the best Sonic game is, they're gonna say one of three games.

  • Sonic 2
  • Sonic 3 & Knuckles
  • Sonic CD

Sonic CD is much, much, much more widely known than people give it credit for. Look at all the gaming review sites. If they go reminiscing on what their favorite Sonic games were, Sonic CD almost always comes up. Especially since there was a PC version that everyone seems to have suddenly forgotten about.

Sonic CD is JUST as "iconic" as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This is not my opinion, but a god damned fact. I don't even like it that much, and I have to admit this.

As for a level presence, if Metal Sonic DOESN'T take Mecha Sonic's place in Sky Sanctuary (which I'm totally betting on, complete with super battle) then his boss battle is gonna be in Stardust Speedway. It'll be the same kind of thing that people are declaring Launch Base to be used in the 3ds version.

EDIT: had to add the quote cause I got triple ninja'd

I'm content with this setup, though it would be cool to, say, have three pieces of DLC for each era featuring a level from a game not featured in the main game (Sonic CD and probably Secret Rings or Black Knight; not sure about the Adventure Era; Shadow the Hedgehog is really the only thing left... maybe an Ark stage would work well).

For the DS I suspect that we're getting Classic stages, Advance Stages, and also Rush/Rivals stages. It would be cool to have an area featured on Sonic Chronicles instead of a second Rush/Rivals stage, though; so it'd be one from each of the Original Trilogy/Death Egg Saga, one from each of the Advance games, and one from Rush, Rivals, and Chronicles. The latter is still highly unlikely, but it'd be cool. :D

EDIT: And yeah, Metal Sonic is mostlikely going to be Stardust Speedway. I also expect Shadow's boss battle to be based on his Ark race, perhaps with some variety, so we also get the Ark represented there. Finally, Silver's will likely be in Soleanna.

Look, everyone, I'm sorry for being so defensive. There doesn't have to be a full Sonic CD level in the game. If we're getting a Metal Sonic boss fight that takes place in a Sonic CD level, I'd be cool with that. Honest. If Sega gives Sonic CD a little acknowledgement for Generations, I'll be happy. I'll ask for nothing more.

Once again, I'm sorry. I won't let my Sonic CD love get in the way of my reasoning.

If a CD level was in generations, then the first question I would ask would be 'What soundtrack would they use? Japanese or US?'

The answer is Japanese both!

Japanese for Classic sonic, US for modern
