Worst Sonic Game Soundtrack?

Recommended Posts

It's pretty sad when you actually come across a Sonic game with a weak soundtrack, though. It seems like music usually tends to be one of the stronger points in those, with memorable music for levels and epic, dramatic music for the final bosses.

Sonic Generations seemed to be the example of a sad case though, when it came to the music for the final boss. I mean, I honestly love the remixes that they have for some of the levels like Modern Chemical Plant Zone or Classic Crisis City, I think those are incredible and I love listening to them.

This however, just..didn't do it for me. It was a random choir and drums that seemed to come out of nowhere. It wasn't a theme and it wasn't dramatic or did it get you pumped to defeat the final boss, it was kind of just there and it honestly constantly bugged me how odd it sounded.

It was like that second part of the Perfect Chaos fight.

This. I mean the final boss music was just so damn bland. You'd think they'd do a full remix of Live and Learn (it technically is pretty much Sonic's theme song), or maybe a remix of the Genesis final boss music (i.e. Sonic 1's Final Zone music....hell, a remix of The Doomsday (and not that prototype found in the 3DS beta version) would had been perfect), but no. Another instrumental theme. And I've heard a lot of people here are sick of those.

I don't think anyone is really sick of the "epic orchestral main theme" final boss are they? I mean it was getting predictable but they were SO GOOD.

Of course Generations didn't have a main theme... Doomsday and Live & Learn mixed together could have been amazing to highlight the two most famous last boss themes from the two Sonics.

Think again. I'm not particularly a fan of them, and would rather we got something that was more in line with the rest of the soundtrack while still being incredibly epic. It's not like they haven't

it before. Orchestral pieces in Sonic games always stick out like sore thumbs. Less so for the final bosses where they're orchestral-rock, but still. I'm a little sick of them. Worked for Solaris, not so much for Perfect Dark Gaia or Egg Nega Wisp. Edited by Blue Blood

I actually thought Solaris was the weakest of the three, it blows us away at the start then spends the rest of the song just building up before looping to the same "epic bit" we heard at the beginning.

At least Perfect Dark Gaia had that neat little melancholy guitar bit and Nega Wisp Armor had the dramatic breakaway into an intesne original melody towards the end.

I think they were nice surprises though. Perfect Chaos, Devil Doom and Alf-Layla-Wa-Layla were kind of lame because we'd already heard the theme songs almost in full beforehand. FinalHazard was perfection though, since we had never got to hear anything more than the opening riff. Since it was my first 3D Sonic game I was blown away by the concept of the final boss being a full blown extended version of what I thought was just a lemotif until then.

I like the orchestra themes, but more variety would be great, because there are more ways to make something "epic" (ugh) than just slap an orchestra and call it a day. I also prefer the themes fitting the enemy more than the hero, so while I love Open Your Heart and What I'm Made Of as much as the next person, I tend to prefer the likes of Doomsday Zone and Solaris Phase 1, unless it's been remixed to feel more sinister (Perfect Dark Gaia) or could potentially be sinister in itself to begin with (Wrapped in Black).

And I happened to like the Time Eater themes for being different. I also appreciate the Deep Core/Egg Wizard's Egg Dragoon-like touch.

EDIT: Take the Mario RPGs for example. You have fast and intense themes for Smithy and the Shadow Queen, but on the other hand the Elder Princess Shroob has a surprisingly melancholy one, and then there's Super Dimentio's theme that sounds like a clown's ticking clock... the point is, that's the kind of variety I'd like to see for Sonic's final bosses.

I would definitely have to say Sonic Chronicles has terrible music, which appears to be the majority of answers here.

To be different I really despise the soundtrack of Sonic R. The songs didn't suit the game at all, they were just shitty, generic love songs (except Super Sonic Racing).

I agree that variety is nice, but I was hoping more for something that would fit the mood better than something like the second part of the Perfect Chaos fight or the Time Eater music that I posted a little earlier. Not all the final boss music has to be some overly dramatic orchestral piece (As much as I honestly love those with stuff like Nega Wisp Armor and Perfect Dark Gaia) But I've also loved plenty of other final boss pieces such as Live & Learn or Doomsday. But I loved those because, to me, they gave off the feeling that you were finally going to finish it all off and that this was the final battle. They fit with everything else that you were listening to, but just something about it joined with the atmosphere of what's going on just seemed to work so well. It wasn't like that with the music for Time Eater in Sonic Generations.

In the end, it really just does all come down to preference, though. So, these are really just my own two cents.

I'd have to say that the majority of the storybook games' soundtracks were rather repellent to me. I know little of Chronicles so I can't say much about that.

Other than Chronicles, id have to say Sonic Rivals 1 and 2.

Seriously, besides the ungodly catchy Race to Win, I can't think of a single notable track from either of the two games.

In terms of the main series, Heroes probably had the weakest soundtrack, its not bad just not particularly memorable. In terms of the whole series, there's a ton,but my personal least favorite is yeah Chronicles, the instruments are just so fucking poor that I have no idea how the sound director listened to it and said "This is ok"

Oh no you didn't!

(I would post more, but there is a media amount limit).

I have to say I strongly disagree with you, I love Sonic Heroes's soundtrack! I felt the tunes were extremely catchy, and while it sound a little cheaper then the soundtrack of the Adventures, it was still awesome. I feel that the tunes were composed in a more Genesis-like style, with Modern instruments. And of course, I can't forget this tune.

"Let me show you just Whaaattt I'mmmmm Maaddee Offfff NOWWWWWW!!!" *epic guitar rif*.

To be honest, I'm glad they at least DID use an original song for the last boss, seeing as it was the only piece of non-recycled content in the game. It's just a shame that it was just so... not bad but unexciting.

Right, I have to say that I agree with you there. The song itself wasn't bad or anything, but it really just could have been so much better. It just felt like it was seriously lacking. As for the recycled music in the levels, it's understandable in my opinion since they were levels from older games, so they already had music.

This is what I think as well, I actually really liked the Sonic Heros soundtrack, there was a lot of really catchy songs in there that just..felt like they were supposed to be in a Sonic game. I admit, it's not my favorite or anything like that, but..by no means the worst or even bad.

Well to be fair to Shadic, it's not like he said that he hated Heroes' soundtrack, just that it wasn't up to par with the other mainline titles, which I agree with.

As for what I think as the worst soundtrack (outside of Chronicles of course), I thought Battle's was pretty mediocre.

I know, I was just saying that I was strongly disagreeing with him saying it was not up to par. Overall, I liked it better then SA2's soundtrack, and I feel it is extremely close if not up to par with SA1, Unleashed and Generations (My top three favourites), at which point my favourites dissolve into personal preference.

I've never been a fan of Sonic R's soundtrack, the songs don't really fit the game, really annoying and embarrassing to listen to.

Can't say I like either Rush soundtrack. Just not my cup of tea.

To be honest I've never been that fond of the Colors soundtrack either. Don't get me wrong it has a few stand outs like; "Starlight Carnival", "Aquarium Park"," Asteroid Coaster", "Terminal Velocity", and "Nega Wisp Armor". But the rest of them are kinda boring ("Sweet Mountain" annoys me). Then you have the awful songs from Cash Cash, "Reach for the Stars" and "Speak With Your Heart", have got to be two of the worst Sonic songs I've ever heard. The singer can't sing and auto tune is annoying as hell. I really wish SEGA would stop bringing these guys back, they ruin every song their in. Jun, please just stick with Crush 40.

I can't speak for Chronicles, never played it.

EDIT:

About Chronicles... my ears...

Big Arm, Speed Highway Classic, Radical Highway Classic, Water Palace Modern, Stardust Speedway US. Did they ruin all of those? I can understand the vocal pieces not being your cup of tea, but come one. Those pieces there are all awesome.

Ill come right out and say I was never to fond of the tunes from SA2. 50-60% of the themes seem to be bland guitar themes/riffs, Tails and Eggman get the worst of it (except for Mission Street, I LOVE Mission Street).

What I love about the Heroes soundtrack is that it's so diverse and it experiments with a lot of different styles. For every awesome track like Ocean Palace, you get something like Frog Forest and Casino Park

Heroes also has the best Special theme in the series barring Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn).

Seriously, im not getting this "cheaply made" statement that some are saying :/
