Sonic 3ds Max work

These renders are fantastic, Exo! Really great stuff! I'm trying to teach myself how to use Blender to make 3D models for our live-action Phantasy Star movie trilogy. So time-consuming. :L How long do the renders such as Death Egg and Sky Chase generally take you? I've been contemplating dropping some money and switching to 3DS Max after seeing a lot of the things that it can do, though I'm not sure if it has a compositor as in-depth as Blender's.

Thanks! The scenes can take a while, but normally due to coming up with a modern design rather than actually modelling it. Plus i like to keep going back to things and changing little bits. 3Ds max or maya is def a good way to go. just takes a while to learn all the bits

Awesome work, I work with 3DS Max and Maya at uni and i know how much work has gone into these. They're fantastic.

If you're up for requests, how about taking the sonic and metal models and recreating the end of the OVA

Thanks! Hah i may do that at some point, could do with re-doing metal sonic as i made it roughly a year ago and it looks a little dated in places now

I gotta say, you're a pretty awesome 3D artist! I'd like to ask for a request if possible, but you're probably really busy working on other stuff at the moment so I won't bother wasting your time.

....just a quick question, though: you wouldn't happen to have a deviantART or Sheezy Art account, would you? If you did, I'd so totally watch you!

Well, if you ever got around to it, I'd like to see your take on either this guy or this enemy I designed.

I'm not asking for both of them, though, just one or the other. You can decide which one you wanna do! (Of course if you wanna try your hand at both of them I ain't gonna stop ya)

Finally done a bit more work on hidden palace, starting to take shape now, so hope its looking alright so far!

Oh my goodness, if I didn't know better, I'd have told you that the Pouncer badnik was official and that was a model of it for Sonic Generations. I showed one of my friends the Casino Night one, and they said "oh, so SEGA decided to make those [referring to the pinball boards] a background object in Generations?", before I told him that it it was an amazing fanart.

Hey Exo, about the Pouncer badnik, I was gonna ask if you can minimize it's polycount to around 8-10k. 41k is a bit much, but if you can make it around that amount of polys while keeping nearly all the details exactly the same, it'd be great. Hope that's not asking too much of you. ^^;

hey, yeh should be able 2, will work on it soon enough, but going to game fest in uk this weekend, sonic generations here i come! :D

From what we can see of the Death Egg in Generations, I like yours more. It looks fantastic.

Out of curiosity, did you make the Sonic model?

Yeah i made it sometime ago using the unleashed models as a reference. I then tried to give him a slightly classic feel, by giving him the black eyes and the more rounded torso

Thanks! Well it can be qute difficult in places, but thats because im still learning quite a few things. Usually work on one for about 2-3 weeks inbetween of other stuff. I use autodesk 3ds max at the moment, but it can be quite expensive, currently im using a version that was supplied through my university. U can get a trial from its website though so you can get a feel for it.

No problem!, nice to know that i have inspired you, just start following some tutorials on the net, pick up a couple of books and just keep working at it. Will seem hard at first but its definately fun when you get into it

You're Hidden Palace pic is amazing, I must admit. But for whatever reason Hidden Palace in 3D just seems kinda....empty.

Don't get me wrong; it looks amazing! Hell of a lot better than anything I could ever hope to do, that's for sure! I'm just suggesting you add some more...I dunno, DEPTH, I guess, to the image as a whole. For example, why not add in some ruin-like structures in the background that are designed to look like they're a part of the Hidden Palace? That would add some depth to the overall design while still keeping in with the fact that this is the Hidden Palace as we truly imagi...*brick'd*

Also, try to create a structure for the Master Emerald altar & the two Super Emerald altars to be connected to, so they don't just look like there floating there for no reason. I don't know why, but the idea of them just being there, floating for no reason, just doesn't look right in a 3D space without some sort of indication that they're being suspended by an unknown force.

Thanks! Yeh i agree with you. Im thinking of adding more in the way of sonic 2 hidden palace into the background to give it that depth. Will have a think about the floating altars and see what i can come up with

There's some amazing work here! Clearly you're very confident with textures and materials, as well as lighting. It would be interesting to see the wire frames of some of your models to see what the topology and edge flow is like.

Thanks!, the scenes ive made arnt all that optimised in terms of polys but quite happy to post up some wireframes when i get back to my main pc. Might not be for a while though as away this week and attending eurogamer expo in london at the weekend. Get another fix of generations haha

Ok i got it down to 18k polys so far with no affect on quality. Might be able to get it a bit lower by changing some details to textures or by re-modelling some parts

Also, was gonna ask but.. can you do anything organic-like? Like, realistic shapes that are organic, and not just solid shapes like architecture. Kind of like how Green Hill looks in Generations. Do you know what I mean?

Yeh i reckon i should be able to, gave it a try when i was just starting out, and it was a bit of a mess haha (can still see it in the 3ds max and old section of my website though). Might give it a shot after ive worked on the other requests. Not gonna do green hill or mushroom hill, so prob angel island or aquatic ruin, unless anyone has any better suggestions?

Well, I was just asking if you could do anything like that, since we're running low on level modelers for Freerunner and may need some help with all of that. Not meaning to overwork you by any means, but we do need all the help we can get.

Ah i see, well just let me know what you want and will get round to it. If u want i can just do a whole level, if u give me a rough idea of how u want it

Also ive never been able to post on retro, and it seems people are looking for updates on freerunner, if u want just drop the image (http://exojamesm.co.uk/kittenbadnikexo.jpg) . Shows some work is still going on
