If other developers had Sonic

Now before anybody says "Oh lord, another fanboy saying that Sega should just give up Sonic!" That's not what I mean. I'm just saying, how do you think that other developers would do with the Sonic series if they had them? Would Nintendo keep the same classic gameplay, and try to expand upon it each game? Would Capcom make the Sonic series a more fan-developed series, then cancel Sonic Generations because it did not meet it's Critera? <_< Would Konami try to make the series a lot more darker and edgier like Metal Gear?

Remember, this isn't a thread for "Why Sonic Team should just give up," It's a thread where you take some other developers and say what they would do with Sonic,(hypothetically speaking). Your thoughts?

What I'm 100% sure of is that Nintendo would get the classic physics perfectly. I think they'd do like with Mario: keep the same formula but change the sauce (... I think I'm hungry). I think they'd use the Unleashed gameplay, if only because it's better than Adventure's, but they could give Sonic back his "normal" moves (as in, Spin Dash and all, with stuff like Light Dash being obtainable by getting a special item). And if Nintendo uses the hedgehog engine in some of their other games, it'd be an impressive combination (Super Mario Galaxy + hedgehog engine = DELICIOUS).

And if Retro is the Nintendo team that develops the games, they're going to look like Sonic Generations graphic-wise.

I'm not sure Nintendo would get the "modern" physics right though.

If it's Capcom, they'll cancel Sonic's games because the fans didn't meet their expectations, trololol.

Nintendo would probably take Sonic and try emphasize on the platformer aspect, while also implementing an open-world sandbox kind of gimmick. The art style would probably be majorly simplified and partially transfigured into something like the classics, and Sonic's voice would be forever set to grunts and simple phrases, where words are limited via textbox. I know many people who'd prefer it be this way, and I myself wouldn't mind it too much, but honestly I like what we're currently getting.

Ubi Soft would probably make Sonic control similar to Rayman Origins and/or Fancy Pants Adventures but with a rolling mechanic and a Spindash, and then proceed to slap it into UbiArt with a wackier art style.

Capcom would say they're gonna do it, make it look really cool, cancel it because "no one cared", and then make another fighting game. :V

Handing Sonic off to different developers could breathe new sparks of life and creativity into it that the series has been desperately needing for a long time.

At the moment though, the only developer I can possibly see reinvigorating the Sonic series is Treasure. A baffling amount of their games is incredibly good, and Sonic could benefit from a frantic run-and-gun style of gameplay that revolves around several intense boss fights per level. I mean, god damn it we already got a Treasure-like Sonic game in the form of Eggman Hates Furries, which was pretty damn fun. I want to see more of this.

I personally don't think Nintendo would mess around with Sonic. The fact Sonic is how it is right now is what makes it different from other platformers, so scrapping that and making Sonic more like Mario Sunshine would be a stupid move from Nintendo IMO.

If they made a Sonic RPG like the Mario RPGs, it'd be SWEET.

The only developer I can really trust is Nintendo cause they put out awesome games but I don't want them to strip Sonic off his personality like they do with their other franchises.

If anything, that's what I'm afraid Nintendo would do: rip Sonic of his edge. I know Sonic isn't supposed to be as "cool and edgy" as the majority makes him to be, but I somewhat feel that Nintendo would remove Sonic of his flair and make their own thing with it.

I'm quite iffy on the idea of Sonic becoming a run-and-gun, but I understand what you mean about bringing new life to the franchise, and I partially agree with that. Sonic just needs more originality while keeping all things that make him good.

Regardless, Treasure would make a good Sonic game no matter what, because Treasure makes good games no matter what. And that's fact.

Konami would make it more crazy over-the-top movie-like experience for plot and cutscenes that makes it feel SO GOOD when you kick Eggman's ass, with batshit insane enemy design (read: Moo), not-so Sonic-y but good soundtrack, and side routes and whole optional areas loaded with goodies for you. I'm not sure if they would get the whole speed (or even jumping) concept right, though, but otherwise, it'd be pretty cool.

Oh and easter eggs.

Sonic: Die monster. You don't belong in this world!

Robotnik: It is not by my hand that I am once again given new cybernetics. I was brought here by Robians, who wish to pay me tribute.

Sonic: Tribute!? You turned them into machines, and make them your slaves.

Robotnik: Perhaps the same things could be said about the Internet.

Sonic: Your words are as empty as your blog's view counter! The furries ill needs a savior such as you!

Robotnik: What is a furry? A miserable little pile of fetishes! But enough talk... Have at you!

Damn, everyone already made all the Capcom canceling jokes. I guess I'll just have to cancel my joke because now it doesn't meet the criteria and wont have enough fan support.

As for a developer I'd love to have Platinum give it a shot personally. I know they haven't made a game like Sonic at all, but they have a knack for the over the top stuff and I'd love to see them attempt a Sonic game with the personality of their titles infused into it all.

Retro Studios.

If we gave Sonic to Nintendo altogether, they might turn him into a long-fogotten IP, like the rest of their other IPs, and just focus on the usual trio - Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon.

Metroid is long-forgotten. Its latest game came out a year ago.

Pikmin is long-forgotten. Pikmin 3 is coming on Wii U.

Kirby is long-forgotten. Two Kirby games are coming, on DS and Wii.

Wario is long-forgotten. By the way, it's not.

etc.

Even Zelda doesn't get milked so much.

I'd say the only series Nintendo really focuses on is Mario. And I'm not going to complain. And the only series Nintendo really forgets is F-Zero... *sad sigh*

Sonic still makes lots of cash. Nintendo wouldn't put it aside. Also, Retro Studios is part of Nintendo, so if they make something it's because Nintendo tell them to, so...

But let's avoid going off-topic.

Personally I'd love to see Treasure give the Sonic franchise a try, especially since they not only have good relations with Sega but also are know for incorporating new and interesting gameplay mechanics, which would benefit not only the hedgehog, but also his friends. (maybe a combination of speed, platfoprming and light & intuitive puzzle solving using the characters abilites)

I was just thinking...hey Square-Enix could get the Unleashed gameplay very easily.

Just replace FFXIII cast with Sonic and let him run but remove the monsters and put mid-bosses and Final bosses.

Whoever get's it rep up. :P

Other than that now.

Nintendo: Keeping it classic i guess. We'll get something similar to New Super Mario Bros.

Capcom: Everyone got the good jokes. Seriously though a new fighting game? i guess. Why not. Super Smash bros worked.

Ubisoft: Something close to Rayman with some sort of gimmick.

Naughty Dog: Now this would be interesting. If we can judge from Crash. We'll get much 3D platforming and a new Racing game. ;)

Man capcom is getting alot of people pissed lately. :c Even with all the hate they are getting, I'm thinking capcom would be the best of the companies people are mentioning. Maybe I'm stuck on the 90's where Capcom had GREAT artwork, great games and a pure passion for their games. Tho we'll NEVER get a true part 2 to any sonic game if capcom had it, it'll be SONIC the hedgehog, SONIC SUPER EDITION, SONIC TURBO, SONIC final strike ( I had too. lol )

Either Capcom or ND. Sonic with the DMC team ( DMC 3 mind you ) Or the ND's uncharted team. It'll be epic.

EXTREME EDIT: Just keep Ono trolling ass away from the game and it's gonna be gold. Seriously. :c

Nintendo: Returns Sonic to his classic simplicity, cranking the difficulty to negative 11.

Microsoft: Probably wouldn't be so bad other than 25% of the game being released as DLC and a heavy reliance on spinoffs and Kinect stuff. Though it could get pretty bad in the likelihood the license would be handled by modern Rare.

Sony: It would definitely would have a level editor. That's all I can be sure of. And massive promotions in home.

Capcom: Probably the same way they handled Megaman. So... the same way Sega handled him to begin with. That, or add zombies.

Konami: What Sonic 06 was aiming for: a lot of high octane action and heavy story focus. Would be worth it for Dance Dance Revolution: Sonic Edition.

Bioware: Nothing but Sonic Chronicles.

Square Enix: Nothing but Sonic Fantasy.

Valve: An official open source 3D Sonic game would kick ass, but I can't see the source engine being easily modified for Sonic physics.

Epic Games: SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG 2. Introducing cover, swearing and even more brown!

Activision: Sonic 06 year after year until people learn to stop buying it and they pretend it never existed and move on to ruining the next great thing.

Granted, that's mostly publishers rather than developers, but as far as individual development teams go, the only teams I could really trust with anything they are given are Retro Studios, Platinum Games and From Software.

I'd like to see a more PC-based developer try their hand at it like Valve or Obsidian. It could be really interesting, I think.

Valve can differentiate the characters (the main ones, at least) the same way the infected characters in L4D or the classes in TF2 are, and put them in a co-op rather than competitive mode. Or both, really. In the latter you may get clones of the characters fighting each other also pretty much like TF2, and with Sonic characters that may be a bit jarring. There may be no way to differentiate the two opposing teams color-wise. What do you do, have blue Sonic and red Sonic?

In Obsidian Sonic will be the main upgradeable character with the others being companions, not controllable but upgradeable as well, and you may get to help them in their own personal missions. You'd get a large overall mission with a lot of choices to make with multiple endings, all taking place in a sandbox environment which would have to be seriously enlarged to fit such fast characters. Either that, or they can simply put large numbers of sandbox maps, not just one. Oh yeah, and it'd be rather glitchy.

I've not thought of the exact details, but that's what I think.

I'd like to see Twisted Pixel try it with a decent budget, though I'm not sure if they'ed really like to spend that much time on one game.

Nintendo would be a good choice but it seems like they only really try on about one game a year.
